Chapter 189: 192 Restless Heart4_1
Dreams are always wonderful, but the reality of bringing them to life is incredibly complex.
Steamed fish?
If it just required regular steaming, Lin Xiangwan was pretty good at it.
But the flavor Qin Muchuan liked was not so ordinary. It’s challenging to steam the unique aroma that comes with frying fish, but he particularly liked that taste.
"...So before steaming, we need to quickly seep it in hot oil. The oil should not be too hot, or it will cook the outside of the fish, ruining the taste and aesthetic when steamed! But the oil can’t be too cold either, or it won’t draw out the taste of the flesh properly!" The words of advice of Butler Liu echoed in Xiangwan’s ears.
To make space for family time and avoiding others seeing her efforts, the new female host of the household had given the servants a holiday!
Well... as the mistress of the house, she should have that authority, right?
Xiangwan, wearing an apron, stood in front of the frying pan with a cleaned bass, all prepared.
She first put some small red peppers into the oil. The red peppers quickly started frying, spreading a spicy fragrance in the air. Muchuan liked a slightly spicy but not too spicy flavor, the only taste he liked while eating fish. "The temperature of the oil should be just right by now, right?"
She tried hard to remember Butler Liu’s instructions!
Yes, that’s what she said!
"Alright..." Lin Xiangwan carefully placed the fish into the frying pan!
Like Butler Liu said, the fish quickly began to sizzle.
Watching the fish gradually change color, Lin Xiangwan felt more and more excited about her future!
"Ok, it’s done. It should be taken out now!" She murmured to herself while reaching towards the fish with a spatula.
Just as the fish was about to be transferred to a plate, she slipped, and it fell back into the pan!
"Oh no..." Xiangwan exclaimed, hastily trying to retrieve the fish.
The fish obstinately refused to cooperate, refusing to get onto the plate.
After dawdling around, the fish turned a golden color in the pan before it was finally removed!
"It’s burnt!" Lin Xiangwan, who had been slaving over the fish, hung her head in defeat; this wouldn’t work for steaming now!
"It’s okay, it doesn’t matter; let’s continue! It might even taste better this way!" she encouraged herself while still hopeful.
After much effort, the food was finally ready just as the kids and Qin Muchuan returned!
"Hmm... what’s that smell? It’s really strange!" Qin Yutong sniffed hard.
"I don’t know what delicious thing Butler Liu has cooked this time!" Lin Haoran asked expectantly.
Ah, in the past, he had only eaten food made by his mother or in hotel restaurants, which he thought tasted really good. But it wasn’t until he moved in with his dad that he discovered others cook even more delicious meals.
Sweet and sour ribs should be soft, not too sweet, and not too sour. It’s a very harmonious, flavorful, and yummy dish.
So he loved eating it very much!
After such a stark contrast, he accidentally discovered - mom’s cooking isn’t that good after all!
It was pitiful that for so many years, he’d been enduring a mouthful of overly salty, then tasteless, followed by overly sweet, then bitter food!
The most pathetic part was, he used to think that his mom’s cooking was delicious, isn’t that just sad?
Now, he was really looking forward to going home for dinner!
"You’re back, hurry and wash your hands, it’s time to eat!" Lin Xiangwan called out cheerfully.
Qin Yutong looked around and, after not finding anyone else, questioned, "Did you make dinner, mom?"
Qin Muchuan didn’t ask but looked at her expectantly.
"Hehe..." Xiangwan laughed bashfully. "Yes, I had nothing to do at home, so I let the aunts off work and made dinner myself!"
"Oh..." Lin Haoran revealed a pained expression.
Qin Yutong didn’t feel anything, as the food mom used to make in Jiangcheng wasn’t bad.
Qin Muchuan had never tasted her cooking before, so he was excited. After washing his hands, he went over to the table and stopped behind her. "What did you make?"
"Um... everything you and the kids like to eat!" His closeness made her heart race.
Qin Muchuan looked over her small shoulder at the colourful spread of dishes on the table - stir-fried wood ear mushrooms, tomatoes scrambled with egg, soy chicken wings, stir fried green peppers, and steamed fish. Even though the fish wasn’t prepared well, it still excited his appetite. "Well done, well done!"
With the kids sitting at the table, dinner started!
Qin Yutong first grabbed for her favorite soy chicken wings. As a kid, and especially because she spent so much time with Lin Haoran, she naturally lost her prim and proper image when it came to food. She took a big bite... chewed a few times and then stopped moving.
Qin Muchuan automatically picked up a piece of fish, popped it in his mouth without a second thought, chewed a bit, and then also froze.
Lin Haoran meanwhile ignored the meat and went straight for the tomato scrambled egg, eating it with a straight face.
Xiangwan ignored her son, and anxiously looked at her daughter and then at... her husband. (Cough cough, she should be able to address him like that since he was legally her husband). "Is it good?"
Yutong took a glance at her mother’s eager gaze and forced herself to continue chewing. "Good, yes, it’s good!"
Xiangwan watched her daughter, waiting for her to swallow.
But Yutong just kept chewing whatever was in her mouth. The more she chewed, the more it seemed she was in pain and showed no signs of swallowing.
What’s happening?
Was it hard to swallow?
"Is the fish good?" Xiangwan nervously asked Qin Muchuan.
"Not bad!" Qin Muchuan swallowed the fish with a deep frown, evident that he was struggling.
"Is it terrible?" Despite the sluggish reaction, she felt that something was wrong.
Lin Xiangwan picked up a piece of chicken wing and tasted it immediately, then sheepishly got up. "It’s salty... not enough sugar... and also undercooked!"
"It’s not too bad, not overwhelmingly unpalatable!" Qin Yutong stuck out her tongue.
She then picked up a piece of fish and tasted it. A bitter flavor filled her mouth. "Oh no, I didn’t clean the gallbladder properly!" Also, there was too much sugar, it was too sweet...
Lin Xiangwan looked at the father and son apologetically, "I must have disappointed you, right?"
Qin Muchuan lightly smiled. "Not at all, the presentation of your food is actually very good, quite deceptive!"
"Hehe..." Lin Xiangwan felt even more embarrassed.
Qin Muchuan picked up some vegetables. "This should taste good, right?"
"Hmm..." For the vegetables, she was confident.
Gnawing the green peppers made a ’crunch crunch’ sound, they seem to have been plucked out of the pan as soon as they were put in. He didn’t like eating vegetables that raw, but this he could bear.
Seeing him eating, Xiangwan felt... even happier!
