Chapter 154: 154 Child Custody_1
Lin Xiangwan felt a tingle of unease in her heart. She stared at Qin Muchuan guardedly, "You’re not planning on using your power to manipulate the DNA results, claiming they’re not my children, are you?"
Qin Muchuan gaped at her, and then retorted coldly, "Do you really think I would stoop so low as to misuse my power on this matter? Relax, I’m not that despicable."
Finished speaking, he chuckled self-deprecatingly. "Besides, I couldn’t do that. I refuse to make decisions that my child will grow up to hate me for! I will respect the results from the hospital!"
Lin Xiangwan finally felt somewhat relieved; he shouldn’t be able to deceive her. "Alright. We will discuss further once we have the results!", she exclaimed.
After a comprehensive DNA test, the results were issued to Lin Xiangwan and Qin Muchuan two weeks later.
Without a doubt, Lin Xiangwan was the mother of the twins. Qin Muchuan was their father. Lin Haoran and Qin Yutong were definitely twins!
Upon receiving the results, Lin Xiangwan couldn’t wait to discuss with Qin Muchuan about the children’s custody plans.
She invited him to dine in a tiny restaurant and booked a small private room.
Since it was not mealtime, the restaurant was relatively empty, affording them some quiet solace.
Before the food was even served, Lin Xiangwan couldn’t hold herself back from speaking. "Even though you’ve kept saying to wait until the results are out, I’ve been unable to stop myself from thinking about how we should raise our children. Both children are my flesh and blood. There’s no way I could abandon them! However, I can understand your feelings towards them, and I can’t possibly keep both of them. After much thinking, I assume we should maintain things as they are for now — I’ll take care of Ranran as before, and you’ll look after Tongtong. We can take turns each weekend and allow the children to stay at our respective homes..."
"You’ve spoken about this plan before, and I’ve already given you a very definitive answer. It’s impossible!" Qin Muchuan coldly cut off her speculation, insisting, "Ranran is my son. I must have him back and acknowledge our lineage!"
"That’s impossible! He’s also my child. You can’t take them both!" Lin Xiangwan exclaimed in horror. She had anticipated he might try this, which was why she had been trying to negotiate with him kindly beforehand.
She hadn’t expected him to be so heartless, determined to take everything from her.
"Listen to me. As long as you’re willing to give up Ranran’s custody rights, we can discuss everything else. For instance, whatever compensation you want, feel free to ask for it!" Qin Muchuan asserted, revealing his negotiator side.
Lin Xiangwan felt ice-cold angst and flashed with anger in her heart, adamantly shaking her head. "...I don’t want any compensation, I just want my child!"
"I advise you not to think that way. Firstly, you’re a single mother. Having Ranran will certainly hamper your chances of finding a boyfriend! Secondly, you’re unemployed, which doesn’t put you in a good position to raise a child!"
"Though I’m out of work, it doesn’t mean I don’t have the ability to work. For all these years, I raised my son single-handedly. I believe that in the future, I can take good care of him!" Lin Xiangwan choked up with emotion as she utter these words.
Having raised a child all by herself for all these years, the struggles she faced were not something ordinary women could understand or overcome.
She felt she had made more efforts than most women. She couldn’t let anyone criticize her as a mother for not providing a good life for her child. She couldn’t accept anyone saying she was not doing a good job!
Qin Muchuan was exceptionally cold, seemingly oblivious to the tears welling up in her eyes and her choked up voice, disregarding all she’s done for the child over the years. "Perhaps you could provide for his basic needs, but what about his education? Do you believe staying with you can provide him a better education than staying with me?"
His casual remark hit the raw nerve of this mother. There was no way she could provide Ranran with superior education, no matter how hard she tried. She couldn’t afford to send him to the best kindergarten, let alone cover the cost of his future overseas study...
Qin Muchuan glanced at her and continued, "The primary school Yutong attends is the best in B City, with a tuition fee of 200,000 RMB per semester! The teaching staff are all gifted graduates from top foreign universities, offering an all-English curriculum. This American education system ensures the children won’t have any language barrier when they head to the USA for high school. So tell me, which school do you plan to send Ranran?"
Lin Xiangwan, looking pale from the blow, managed a weak response, "Ranran, he was selected for the ’Yutong Study Program.’ He could also return to B City and attend a key primary school."
Qin Muchuan officially stated, "Miss Lin, perhaps you’re not clear. The ’Yutong Study Fund’ does indeed provide selected children with the opportunity to attend key primary schools and even exempts tuition fees. But these key primary schools are nothing compared to the private schools offering full English instructional programs!"
"But children don’t necessarily have to go abroad to further develop their skills. There are opportunities for growth in our own country as well!" Lin Xiangwan emphasized.
Qin Muchuan, appearing calm, argued his point. "Of course, I’m not denying China’s education. However, studying abroad allows for higher and more expansive future development... Otherwise, our society wouldn’t be so fixated on championing overseas returnees!"
Angered and on the verge of tears, Lin Xiangwan insisted on holding back the stream. "Just because I can’t send the child abroad, does it mean I can’t provide a good education for him? There are many children across the nation. Not all of them can study overseas. Does that mean their parents aren’t doing well?"
Qin Muchuan smiled arrogantly and calmly stated, "But don’t forget, Ranran has the opportunity to attend a better school, as long as you don’t stand in his way!"
Lin Xiangwan suddenly felt an enormous burden weighing on her heart. She wished to keep the child, but didn’t want him to lose out on the many opportunities because of her. "If you truly consider him as your son, you wouldn’t gloat over his... unfortunate circumstance in comparison to Yutong, would you?"
Qin Muchuan silently watched as she crumbled under his steady gaze.
"It depends on your choice!"
Lin Xiangwan found herself torn between choices, filled with self-reproach.
But, she couldn’t leave her child. She really couldn’t.
She reassured herself repeatedly in her heart that as long as she kept the child, they could figure even the toughest situations out.
Raising her head once more and looking at him, her vision became resolute. "I still want my child. Whatever you can provide for the child, I, Lin Xiangwan, can too!"
