Chapter 1520: Chapter 1518: Admission
『Notification: Fifteen minutes remain until the activation of [Event - Box of Resentment].
Killers who have passed the ability check may pre-enter by paying experience value.
"Pre-entry" is limited to the streets and does not allow entry into any building.
During this period, use of all abilities is prohibited, and direct or indirect attacks on other killer players are forbidden.』
The crossroads.
Upon hearing the pre-entry notification, a total of eighteen killers each paid [500 experience value].
Should one achieve victory in the event or survive until the game’s conclusion, the experience value will be reimbursed at a fixed multiplier.
Once experience value is paid, a bracelet displaying the number of "Ladybugs" will be issued.
As everyone hesitated slightly while trying to step into the villa street shrouded in black fog,
only the chainsaw wielder, holding a mysterious female companion by his side and a dog by his leash, strode forward without hesitation, becoming the first to enter.
This only made everyone’s fear of the "Chainsaw Wielder" deepen. During the event, they planned to avoid him as much as possible... Of course, if the Chainsaw Wielder fell into some desperate situation, they wouldn’t hesitate to take advantage of it for a big score.
...
"This feeling... it’s unsettling..."
Stepping one foot onto the street, Sally immediately felt an indescribable unease crawling over her body.
During the time when Han Dong had been making a name for himself, the two of them had accumulated a large number of Ladybug Points,
with Sally spending 100 points to unlock the "First Stage" of her [True Form], bringing some traits of the Black Goat back to light.
Walking down the street cloaked in black fog, the Black Goat’s wool bristled.
Not just because of the 0°C temperature of the area, but due to a heightened sense of danger.
The standalone villas located here seemed to have been abandoned entirely, neglected for an extended period,
with overgrown weeds covering their yards, all of which featured one or more densely leafy trees. The villas themselves were partially veiled by foliage, appearing even more grim and desolate, evoking an unmistakable sense of being inside "Ju-On."
The windows were either covered by curtains, plastered with old newspapers, or nailed shut with wooden boards.
Nonetheless,
Sally felt as though something was staring at her from behind the windows.
The growing sense of danger, coupled with the coldness piercing her very bones, drove her to lean closer to the man beside her.
At that moment, Han Dong offered his initial analysis of the "pre-entry" period:
"As expected, the difficulty level of this event doesn’t match any ordinary games. We’ll need an opportunity to test the strength of the spirit bodies to map out further action plans.
These linked villas are numerous; simply relying on luck won’t lead us to the [Box of Resentment].
It’s highly probable the event organizers added some complex, nonlinear progression mechanics to make things more interesting. It might involve gathering pertinent clues or codes from different villas, or meeting certain conditions to gradually approach the box’s true location.
In any case, during this early phase, our priority should be finding a [safehouse]."
Just then.
The Count, who had been walking ahead, suddenly sniffed the air, turned around, then hopped up onto Han Dong’s body, retreating of his own accord.
Han Dong was a bit puzzled, as theoretically, no danger should present itself before the event officially started.
The Count, now hiding within Han Dong’s body, immediately spoke:
"There are three powerful presences approaching... Judging by the density of their auras, they’re far beyond the group we saw at the crossroads earlier, or frankly, anyone we’ve encountered so far.
And let me clarify! My retreat isn’t about fear or hiding.
My existence is a trump card for you; it’s crucial to stay hidden from opponents of this caliber! Otherwise, it could spell trouble if we meet again later in the event... That’s all I’ll say. They should be arriving shortly."
Although Han Dong knew the Count was bluffing out of cowardice, encountering individuals who could scare the Count just from their aura meant they were no ordinary foes.
"Is it Pope and his group, or some other travelers of Fate?"
Han Dong and Sally both stopped walking.
The thick black fog that filled the street restricted visibility to a mere five meters ahead,
when three killers, each with drastically different appearances, auras, and attire, emerged in succession,
one of whom had his tongue hanging unnaturally out of his mouth. As he walked, the sound of ancient coins jingling accompanied him. What’s more, his name appeared in red, indicating hostility.
"Travelers from another world? No wonder the Count was spooked. These three are far from simple... especially that pretty young man. Asian, perhaps?"
As the two teams drew closer to each other.
Sniff, sniff~
Keigo, the killer with his tongue dangling externally, seemed to catch the scent of a powerful individual. He brazenly pressed his nose against Han Dong, sniffing him up and down.
"So strong... So much bloodlust!
Boss, this guy is way stronger than the usual killers. Can I kill him?"
Keigo entirely ignored Han Dong, his actions and words brimming with provocation.
Suddenly—
Slap!
A delicate yet firm hand struck across Keigo’s face, the resounding smack reverberating across the dim street.
The handsome young man furrowed his brows, glaring at his companion in anger. "Who allowed you to be so rude, Keigo? Apologize at once."
The once-arrogant Keigo suddenly became docile. "Ah... Sorry~"
"I sincerely apologize, you two. Please overlook his impudence."
"It’s fine," Han Dong replied, his voice devoid of emotion as it escaped through the steel mask.
"This event seems especially treacherous. If we are fortunate to encounter each other in a moment of crisis, I hope we can assist each other in overcoming obstacles. As for the box required for clearing the event, let’s rely on our individual strengths."
Han Dong gave no response. Instead, he furrowed his brows and walked off with Sally in tow.
Although his face remained expressionless, fury had already begun to smolder inside him. Were it not for the event’s rules, Han Dong might have already attacked... However, his intended target wasn’t the insolent madman with the errant tongue. It was the handsome young man.
Though disguised under courteous pretense, the latter had clearly been surreptitiously probing Han Dong for information about his special traits.
"Nicholas, they seem to have their sights set on you... If we meet them again during the event, I fear they’ll deliberately target us."
"That’s fine. If they want to play, then let’s entertain them.
Still, let’s avoid clashing head-on. Using the safehouses and the event’s randomized difficulty might be the optimal strategy... Otherwise, we could end up with mutual destruction."
"Mm, that little pretty boy was truly revolting. He exudes an aura I can’t stand."
...
The trio’s side.
"Oh~ He noticed, did he?"
Watching the fading silhouettes of the duo vanish into the black fog, the handsome young man softly tapped his shoulder with the handle of his fan, his expression slightly disappointed.
"Boss, those two seem pretty strong, don’t they?"
"Indeed... A fine young man. I’d love to have a deeper conversation with him. Let’s move on and see if there are any other intriguing players worth noting."
...
As the pre-entry countdown reached its final ten seconds,
and the event area neared its black-circle lockdown,
a swift silhouette suddenly appeared at the threshold, quickly passing the ability check and entering.
He showed little interest in gathering intel during the pre-entry phase,
perhaps due to his peculiarity deliberately waiting until the last moment to step in, avoiding other players,
or perhaps... he had merely wandered here by chance—joining for a bit of fun.
