Chapter 1493: Chapter 1491: The Criminal

From the beginning until now.

Han Dong has not received any relevant instructions, unlike previous Fate events, where there would be main storyline prompts or somewhat clear directional guidance right at the start.

"As an individual grows within the Fate Space, systematic guidance will gradually decrease.

Early game-like guidance is more well-developed to help newcomers adapt to the unknown environment and reduce deaths caused by accidents... For individuals like me, who’ve already reached the door-opening level, basic guidance is no longer necessary.

The essence of [Unknown Fate] lies in completely unpredictable event development and highly liberalized world scenarios.

You must find the main storyline yourself and also drive it forward through your own efforts.

Currently, there are two key pieces of information:

1. I am confined in the hospital; I likely need to complete a certain task to leave.

2. There is a fugitive hiding in the hospital who is being pursued by the police.

Perhaps ’the fugitive’ is tied to ’leaving the hospital’... If I stay hidden in the wards and wait for the police to conduct a full search of the hospital until they find the fugitive, what would happen?

Still, taking action is better.

It’s absolutely necessary to gather information about this hospital in advance. After all, I can’t conclude whether the problem lies with the fugitive or the hospital itself.

Even if I encounter the fugitive halfway through, as long as they’re not armed with a firearm, they pose no significant threat to me.

Even if equipped with a gun, considering their current situation, they wouldn’t just open fire immediately upon seeing me... As long as the fugitive is a common person, my odds of victory are rather high."

While Han Dong was contemplating, the nails on his right arm were slowly growing, reaching up to thirty centimeters in length, their hardness allowing them to cut through flesh.

Due to the fugitive issue, most wards were closed.

While Han Dong was passing by a room with an open door by chance—a shared ward—he found it was occupied by a patient who had suddenly fallen ill, with doctors and nurses rushing to treat them.

In less than a minute, the doctors and nurses exited the ward hurriedly.

"From the looks of it, the fugitive is only hiding in the hospital and hasn’t caused any major disturbance yet... Let’s just head directly to the first-floor lobby and try to leave the hospital first."

For some reason.

Although Han Dong was not afraid of the fugitive,

he felt an inexplicable unease in the hospital, driving him to leave... Even at the beginning, Han Dong had attempted to climb out through the windows because of this subtle discomfort brought on by the hospital.

Currently, there are two choices to reach the first-floor lobby:

1. The elevator.

2. The staircase in the [Safety Passage].

Recalling the "elevator kills" frequently seen in horror movies, Han Dong decisively headed toward the stairway at the end of the corridor, where the [Safety Passage] sign was lit.

After all, elevators come with too many unstable factors, and given Han Dong’s current physical state, it would be incredibly difficult to escape if an anomaly occurred inside the elevator.

However.

Just as Han Dong reached the end of the corridor.

Creaaak~

The door connected to the stairway in the [Safety Passage] had just closed, as if someone had just left.

As Han Dong attempted to chase after them... Bang! The door to the nearby women’s restroom emitted a sudden noise.

Shhh!

Five long claws, tainted with plague, extended from his right hand.

Entering combat mode, Han Dong pressed himself against the cold tile wall and quietly slipped into the restroom.

However, upon entering the restroom, the scene that greeted Han Dong made him quickly retract his claws.

In front of him.

A female patient, her neck half-slit open, lay collapsed in a stall.

The sound from earlier was caused by her falling body colliding violently with the stall.

Due to her substantial weight—approximately two hundred kilograms—the impact had broken the stall’s wooden door and the toilet’s flushing mechanism... Fresh blood and sewage were mixed together, creating an extreme stench.

Judging from the woman’s wound and the blood on the ground, she was unquestionably beyond saving.

This also strongly suggested that whoever had just left through the [Safety Passage] was likely the assailant... Yet Han Dong didn’t immediately give chase. He stuck to the restroom door, observing for a while to ensure no one else was nearby before slipping quickly toward the stairway.

To avoid being seen and mistaken for the killer.

Creeeak!

As soon as Han Dong set foot in the [Safety Passage], he immediately heard a cry for help coming from below... The scream lasted only an instant before the throat appeared to have been sliced open.

The sound source was just two floors away.

Han Dong mustered all his strength and chased downward at maximum speed.

However, the target also registered the sound of pursuit.

They escaped downward at an even faster pace, even employing parkour-like movements, using the railing to quickly vault down.

In their panicked state, the assailant completely severed the victim’s neck, causing the victim’s head to roll within the stairwell as fresh blood endlessly poured from the severed neck.

But Han Dong did not stop moving, nor did he show any change in expression.

He kept his gaze fixed on the black shadow fleeing downward, estimating their descent speed.

"If this keeps up, there’s no way I can catch them. I’ll have to use unconventional methods."

The stairwell had a hollow atrium design (a four-ring structure).

Han Dong clenched his teeth, the muscles in his right arm swelling to 1.5 times their original size as worm-like veins pulsed across the surface.

He vaulted over the stairway railing, dropping straight down the atrium.

Free-falling was evidently the fastest descent method... After falling over ten meters, spanning four entire floors, he finally caught up with the assailant.

With his swollen right arm, he grabbed onto the railing.

Crunch! A metallic compression sound!

As Han Dong arrested his fall, the metal railing deformed under the pressure, leaving a deep imprint where his palm had gripped it.

The fleeing fugitive was so startled by the dramatic scene that it gave Han Dong an opening to strike.

Before the fugitive could swing the sharp blade in his hand, Han Dong vaulted over the railing, delivering a flying kick squarely to the fugitive’s chest... Thud! The fugitive, struck in the chest, staggered backward and slammed heavily into the wall, his hood falling off in the process.

A filthy, haggard middle-aged man’s face was revealed.

Just as Han Dong prepared to deliver another blow to incapacitate him entirely.

Murderous intent suddenly flashed in the fugitive’s pupils... Han Dong caught this subtle detail and immediately halted his movement.

Slash!

A blade swung out, blood splattering.

Han Dong stared at the roughly 3cm cut on his chest, his expression complex... The strike had been incredibly dangerous; had he failed to stop in time, his chest cavity might have been split open.

"This guy isn’t ordinary... I can’t hold back anymore."

Taking advantage of the fugitive’s missed strike.

A fist the size of a sandbag smashed toward the fugitive’s head.

Crack!

With the fugitive’s back pressed against the wall, the impact forced his head to snap backward, his skull slamming into the wall forcefully.

He collapsed,

a smear of blood-scented pink fluid leaking from the back of his head.

At that moment, the long-awaited System prompt sounded: "You have defeated the potential fugitive. The danger in this area has been neutralized."

"Huh? That’s it?"

Han Dong hadn’t expected that this alone would conclude the opening scene of a Fate event, assuming that a high-difficulty Unknown Fate event would carry a completely lethal level of challenge.

Although this fugitive had some tricks up his sleeve, he wasn’t truly dangerous.

Not long after.

The sound of commotion attracted the police to the scene, giving Han Dong a thumbs-up for his performance.

Yet in accordance with procedure, Han Dong was required to go to the police station to provide a statement.

Thus, Han Dong, escorted by the police officers, smoothly arrived at the hospital’s first-floor lobby.

Looking at the police cars outside and the street scenes beyond, Han Dong took a deep breath—at least he could finally leave this unsettling hospital.

Just as he was about to step out of the hospital lobby, Han Dong noticed an odd detail.

The hospital’s main exit, labeled on top of the doors, read [Entrance] instead.

As Han Dong followed the police officers and stepped out through the hospital’s doors, everything suddenly turned black...

Beep... Beep... Beep!

The sound of monitors entered his ears.

Han Dong awoke in a familiar ward; the only change in the room’s setup was a singular, infinitesimal difference.

On the potted plant placed on the bedside table, two ladybugs crawled—one more than when Han Dong had first awakened.
