Chapter 1038 - Chapter 1038 Chapter 137 Whirlpool
Chapter 1038: Chapter 137: Whirlpool Chapter 1038: Chapter 137: Whirlpool The interrogation room was so pitch-black it felt boundless.
Han Dong was bound here alone.
His calves downward were covered by a layer of black liquid, which could monitor the energy state within Han Dong’s body and sense his emotional fluctuations, facilitating the upcoming interrogation.
The investigator, wearing a stand-collar overcoat with candles burning on his shoulders, stood opposite; the “Mother of the Night” badge on his chest was particularly conspicuous.
“Nicholas Valen, a courier from Perugia City.
You killed a ‘Black Goat Progeny’ that attacked a mining squad in the Black Forest, saving a miner. At [10:30] you passed the relevant identity check and obtained a temporary residence permit to enter the city.
At [11:00] you checked into the Black Water Hotel.
Am I correct?”
“Yes,” Han Dong nodded.
“During that time, you wrote a letter to the hotel owner–Gognome Blackwater.
You hoped that Gognome Blackwater could arrange a position for you and your minion in the hotel.
Is that right?”
“Yes,” Han Dong nodded in confirmation.
The investigator continued:
“Since you belong to the ‘Newcomers,’ Gognome naturally rejected your job request.
Due to being rejected, and perhaps also some verbal conflicts, you harbored resentment in your hearts.
At the next day, early in the morning at [00:54], you killed Gognome Blackwater and attempted to hide his corpse’s remnants in a narrow alley fifty meters away from the hotel.”
Having said that.
The investigator handed over a blood-stained letter and a photograph.
It was the very letter Han Dong had Mary give to the owner, with blood that had splattered widely across it.
As for the photo presented by the investigator, it was taken by a surveillance device on the street.
The photo clearly showed Maritzis, wrapped in a bath towel, standing with Han Dong at the mouth of the narrow street, whispering, as if discussing the choice of a spot to dispose of the body.
Upon seeing this, the ‘unease’ from last night quickly overflowed.
Han Dong asked as calmly as possible:
“Do you have pictures of the crime scene? May I see them?”
“The crime scene has been perfectly recreated with black fog, and you, as a suspect, are permitted to view it.”
The investigator took out two specially marked candles with sequential numbers from the file bag and lit them on both the left and right sides of the interrogation room.
Upon ignition,
a great amount of dark mist immediately released from the wicks, and coupled with the dark environment of the interrogation room, it recreated the crime scene with 100% accuracy.
One candle corresponded to the bedroom where the hotel owner was murdered,
the other corresponded to the alley where the body was hidden,
[Bedroom]: There were numerous signs of struggle as if the hotel owner had fought with the perpetrator for quite some time until he was killed.
[Alley]: The hotel owner’s corpse was divided into multiple trash bags, carelessly thrown in the alley, and by the time it was discovered, it had been largely eaten by rats and insects.
Han Dong immediately collected all the details of the crime scene and sent them to his brain for rapid processing.
“With your investigative methods, you must also have found many doubtful points at the scene, right?
At least [5] of the signs of struggle in the room were falsified.
What is certain is that the hotel owner, being a ‘Mature Body,’ was killed almost instantly, without any resistance.
As for the body thrown in the alley, it seems as if the intent was to destroy evidence… but in reality, it seems more inclined to make it ‘discoverable.’
In the alley next door, there are many big mice that eat much faster than the little mice here plus insects, yet the body was stuffed into this narrow alleyway.”
“The main goal was to ‘frame’ someone.”
Confronted with Han Dong’s explanation, the agent showed few changes in expression and pointed to a photo of two people standing at the entrance to the alley, “These are indeed suspicious points, but we can’t rule out your involvement either.
Why were you both at the entrance to the alley at the time of the incident when you were supposed to be resting at the hotel?”
Han Dong replied calmly, “At that time, while resting by the window, I accidentally caught sight of a ‘phantom’.
Having caught just a glimpse, I didn’t get a clear view.
I saw what appeared to be a spiraled arm and skin with a slight metallic sheen, which gave me an uncomfortable feeling.
As I mentioned, I am a courier from Perugia, and my only servant is a Toad Demon… who happens to have Spatial Ability. So, I used it to go check the alleyway where the ‘phantom’ was.”
In just a moment, the phantom was gone.”
As Han Dong described the phantom,
the agent, who had been composed throughout the conversation, suddenly shuddered, and even one candle on his shoulder went out.
After a brief pause, the agent handed over paper and pen.
“…Can you sketch what you saw of the ‘phantom’? Since you come from Perugia, you should be quite talented in drawing, right?”
“No problem.”
Grey tentacles grew from between Han Dong’s fingers and directly copied the image from his memory onto the piece of paper.
“Wait here…”
The agent took the paper and left.
He immediately met up with another agent interrogating Maritzis and exchanged information.
Their testimonies matched, and no discrepancies could be found, though Maritzis claimed not to have seen any phantom.
Moreover, neither exhibited the emotional or energy fluctuations typical of lying during their interrogations.
Straight afterward,
the agent gave the sketch drawn by Han Dong to a Minister above them and briefly explained the situation.
“What? A courier who fled from Perugia can see the ‘Whirlpool’?”
“His identification, statement, and interrogation are unproblematic.
This person has indeed come to London for the first time, unaware of recent events here, let alone the ‘Whirlpool’ matter.
We suspect that it’s precisely because he caught a glimpse of the ‘Whirlpool’ that he was framed.”
The Minister wearing a black mask and white gloves, fingers interlocked against his chin, “It sounds plausible but also implausible… the most logical course of action for the ‘Whirlpool’ would have been to simply dispose of this individual, wouldn’t it?
Why choose the riskier route of framing him?”
The agent extended a tentacle and scratched his cheek:
“…Could it be that the ‘Whirlpool’ was not confident it could kill the courier?”
The Minister nodded, “You’re right. It’s very likely there was uncertainty about killing the courier, which is why they opted to frame him.
After all, a newcomer killing a local resident would, on conviction, be almost certainly sentenced to death and handed over to the Night Church for processing.
…Let them go.”
“Just like that? This courier from Perugia has the visual ability to detect the ‘Whirlpool’… Since he’s still a blank slate, why don’t we recruit him to work for us?”
“The Whirlpool is the biggest issue we’re currently facing, but we haven’t eliminated the threat this courier himself poses.
I don’t believe he’s just a humble courier…
Since he can catch a glimpse of the ‘Whirlpool,’ he’s undoubtedly being watched in return.
We can use this to figure out his true intentions and may even use him as bait to catch a big fish connected to the ‘Whirlpool’.”
“Understood.”
