Chapter 94: Chapter Ninety Four
" No it’s nothing like that." Suzy quickly withdrew her hand, her face flushing with embarrassment as she acts less concerned. "I was just asking because it looks ugly," she mumbled, her voice barely audible. "You can tell Davis to call Dr Abernathy to see to it"
Ryan raised an eyebrow, a hint of amusement in his eyes. "Is that so?" he replied, his voice low and seductive.
" Definitely" She said as she proceeded to get down from the table, but Ryan rushed to help her, his arms wrapping around her waist. With instinct, She wrapped her arms around his neck, her face pressed against his chest.
As he carried her to the ground, she looked up at him, her eyes filled with a mix of confusion and curiosity. "I can actually get down on my own you know?" She said.
" I know" He replied, a smile plastering his face.
" What’s going on with you?" she asked, her voice low. "You’ve been acting weird lately."
Ryan chuckled, his eyes sparkling with mischief. "Just being nice," he replied, his voice playful.
Suzy rolled her eyes, but she couldn’t deny that she was right. He had been acting strangely lately, he is usually more distant and withdrawn but his behavior is changing.
As he set her down, she winced in pain, her hand instinctively reaching for the bruise on her back.
Ryan noticed her discomfort and reached out to touch the bruise. "Does it still hurt?" he asked, his voice filled with concern.
Suzy nodded. " Yes just a little." She said. The pain was intense, but she refused to let it show.
"I’m sorry," Ryan said, his voice filled with genuine remorse. "I didn’t mean to hurt you."
Suzy looked at him, her eyes filled with surprise. She couldn’t remember the last time Ryan had apologized, even when he was clearly at fault. Something was definitely wrong.
As she continued to process her thoughts, she couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something more going on. Ryan’s behavior was out of character, and she couldn’t understand why he was acting so strangely.
"Where has your mind wandered away to, duchess? What are you thinking about?" Ryan asked, his voice low and gentle.
Suzy snapped out of her reverie. "It’s nothing," she replied, her voice a little shaky.
Ryan’s eyes narrowed slightly. He could tell that she wasn’t being entirely truthful. "Are you hungry? I’m sure you haven’t had anything today."
Suzy hesitated, her stomach growling in protest. "No, I’m not hungry," she said, her voice barely a whisper.
Ryan raised an eyebrow, amusement glinting in his eyes. "Are you sure?" he asked, his voice playful.
Suzy surrendered, her face flushing with embarrassment. "Yes," she admitted, her voice barely audible.
Ryan turned to call for Doris. "Tell Mrs. Madelyn to prepare chicken for the Duchess," He instructed as she entered the study.
" Why would you disturb a woman in the middle of the night to prepare chicken?" Suzy said as she raised a hand, stopping Doris. "A light pastry would suffice," she said, her voice weak.
Doris nodded, hurrying off to follow Suzy’s instructions and prepare the meal.
Ryan gaze returned back to Suzy, a soft smile on his face. "You can go to the room and have your dinner," he said, his voice gentle. "I’ll join you when I’m finished."
Suzy nodded, turning to leave. As she walked away, she noticed something glinting on the far end of a side table. She picked it up, her fingers tracing the delicate curves of the earring. It was hers, she realized, the one that had been missing for a while now.
She smiled to herself, a sense of peace washing over her. She has been looking for this one for a while now. But what is it doing in Ryan’s study? For a while, she has been missing a few jewelries like rings, earrings even hair pins and she knows the servants doesn’t involve themselves in theft. She shrug off the thought to avoid dwelling deep into it as she left. Ryan watched her go, a smile playing on his lips. He had a feeling that things were finally starting to fall into place.
As he returned to his desk, he noticed something glinting on the floor. He picked it up, examining it closely. It was Suzy’s earring, a delicate piece of jewelry that she wore when she entered his study.
He held it up to the light, admiring its delicate design. "She must have forgotten this one too," he chuckled. "Messy as usual, leaving your things for me to pick up," he murmured, a smile playing on his lips.
A flashback played in his mind.
[ FLASHBACK BEGINS ]
Months ago, after getting drunk thinking about Eleanor betrayal, he stood up from the chair, his head aching. He proceeded to remove his clothes to take a warm bath. As he removed his shirt, an object fell down. Curious, he picked it up and looked at it in the light. It was a woman’s earring.
"Who came to my room?" he muttered to himself. He examined the earring, noting its intricate design and expensive-looking gemstones. It was definitely not something that belonged to one of the servants.
A devilish smile crept across his face. He knew who it belonged to. Suzy. He had seen her wearing it at the when she goes out of the castle, and he had admired its beauty.
With a mischievous glint in his eye, he decided to hide the earring. He would use it as an excuse for her to come to his room again.
[ FLASHBACK ENDS ]
In the present, Ryan chuckled to himself. "I’ve started playing games like a child because of you," he muttered, shaking his head. He had never been one for petty schemes, but for Suzy, he was willing to do anything.
His eyes fixed on the earring in his hand. It was a small thing, a piece of jewelry that had accidentally been left behind. Just like the other one she left in his study when she scattered the Carleton books all over the place, angry at him for taking decisions without her on her duties as the host of the Carleton ball. Seems she has a particular taste in earrings.
He sat back in his chair, lost in thought. He didn’t even know when he became drawn to her and had never admitted his feelings to himself. Now, as he watched her from afar, he realized that he was falling in love with her and he is sure he loves her now, so very much, more than words can’t help him explain.
The thought filled him with a strange sense of joy and fear. He had been hurt in the past, and he was afraid of getting hurt again. But he also knew that he had to take the risk before she drives him mad.
He puts the earring in his pocket with the intention to give it back to her when he gets to the room as he tries to focus on finishing his work.
