Chapter 179 - Hundred And Seventy Nine

Chapter 179: Chapter Hundred And Seventy Nine

Suzy’s carriage pulled up to the courtyard of the newly appointed Baron Hudson’s manor. The manor, though newly acquired, exuded an air of established elegance, its stone facade bathed in the warm glow of the evening lanterns. Noah stepped down first, then turned to assist Suzy as she gracefully exited the carriage. He handed the invitation to the waiting butler, who bowed respectfully and ushered them towards the garden, where the gathering was taking place.

The garden was a vibrant blend of colors and scents. Lanterns hung from the branches of the trees, casting a soft, romantic light over the scene. Guests mingled, their voices a gentle murmur against the backdrop of soft music. Flowers bloomed in abundance, their fragrant petals adding a touch of sweetness to the air.

Baron Hudson and his wife, Baroness Letitia, rushed to greet Suzy, their faces alight with pleasure. "Your Grace," Baron Hudson exclaimed, bowing slightly. "We’re so honored you could make it."

"Thank you," Suzy replied, offering a polite smile. "It’s a pleasure to be here."

Baroness Letitia, her eyes sparkling, added, "We were so hoping you could attend. We know how busy you must be."

They noticed Ryan’s absence and inquired, "We were expecting the Duke, Your Grace. Is he well?"

"He’s very busy with important matters," Suzy explained, her voice calm. "He sends his regrets."

"Of course, of course," Baron Hudson said, nodding understandingly. "Please, make yourself comfortable."

"We understand, your grace," Baroness Letitia said, "Thank you once again for coming."

Baroness Letitia escorted Suzy to a comfortable seat, a plush chair overlooking the garden. Suzy sat down grumbling about how Irene tightened the corset on her waist. She murmured " All this blasted traditional dresses. Can’t wait for all these to be over so that I can go home." She opened her fan, its delicate lace fluttering gently, trying to cool herself in the warm evening air. She took in the scene, observing the guests and their interactions, her mind alert and observant.

"Isn’t it my favorite Duchess, Cassandra, the love of my lovestruck cousin’s life?" a familiar voice said from behind her.

She turned her head and found Evan standing behind her, a smug smile plastered across his lips. His presence immediately dampened her mood. She turned her head back to the front, pointedly ignoring him, and continued to flutter her fan, pretending to be watching the couples dancing.

Evan, undeterred, moved to stand directly in front of her, his eyes scanning her face before noticing Noah standing a few feet away. "I see," he said, his voice laced with a mocking tone. "Ryan couldn’t come so he sent one of his lackeys." He let out a mocking laugh then continued. "I was even expecting Byron to come in his stead since that bastard has been his lapdog, but this is more laughable."

Suzy looked at him, her expression devoid of any emotion. "His grace is busy, so he couldn’t make it," she stated simply.

Evan raised an eyebrow, his smile widening. "Busy with what, pray tell?" he asked, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "Cause I know he doesn’t have any important work with the king anymore, so there’s no excuse."

Suzy, her patience wearing thin, closed her fan with a soft snap, the sound echoing slightly in the quiet space. "What’s your problem?" she asked, her voice laced with annoyance. "You always fight with Byron and insulting him at every given opportunity, now you want to pick a fight with my husband. What exactly is bugging you? Do you hate your external family that much?"

Evan smiled, a predatory gleam in his eyes, as he crouched down in front of her chair. "I find you endearing when you’re angry," he said, his voice low and smooth. "I must say, you are the most intelligent woman I’ve come across in my entire life."

Suzy held his gaze, her expression unwavering. "Whatever do you mean? What are you spouting out now?" she asked, her voice cool and composed.

"The way your eyes hold no fear, the way your brain works," Evan continued, his voice almost a whisper. "It’s fascinating."

Suzy, growing increasingly fed up with his nonsensical flattery, opened her fan again and resumed fanning herself, pointedly ignoring him. She was tired of his games. She just wanted to enjoy the evening and go back to the chateau.

Evan continued, his voice low and conspiratorial, "You stopped sending spies to my residence. I’m a bit disappointed you withdrew so easily. You know, the game was getting interesting then you decided to be a bad player " He paused, his gaze flicking towards Noah, Suzy followed his gaze as it landed on Noah then looked back at Evan as he stared back at her.

A devilish smile spread across his lips as he added, "You send more, I kill them."

Suzy’s breath caught in her throat. She couldn’t utter a word, her mind reeling from his blatant threat.

Evan’s smile disappeared instantly, replaced by a cold, hard expression. "I’ll keep killing them till you have no one else to send," he stated, his voice devoid of emotion. Then, as quickly as it had vanished, his smile returned, a chilling contrast to his previous words.

Suzy’s grip on her fan tightened, her knuckles turning white. He noticed the subtle change in her posture, the slight tremor in her hands.

He chuckled, a low, unsettling sound. "I think I prefer the fear in your eyes than the anger," he said, his voice laced with amusement. " it’s fascinating, you’re fascinating."

Suzy glared at him, her eyes flashing with a mixture of anger and defiance.

"Now that look of anger is back," he observed, his smile widening. He stood up, extending a hand towards her. "Would you join me on the dance floor?"

Before Suzy could decline, a familiar voice cut through the air. "Duchess."

Suzy turned, her heart leaping at the sound of his voice. "Ryan," she replied, her voice filled with relief. She stood up from her seat, her gaze fixed on him.
