Chapter 153 - Hundred And Fifty Three

Chapter 153: Chapter Hundred And Fifty Three

The afternoon sun dipped lower, casting long shadows of tress across the garden. Suzy continued reading, her voice a gentle murmur in the peaceful surroundings. Ryan remained still, his eyes closed, his head resting comfortably on her lap. She could feel his presence, his weight a comforting anchor against her. The warmth of his hair a soft caress against her skin.

Lost in the rhythm of the story, unable to concentrate, Suzy gently dropped the book beside them on the grass. She found herself instinctively playing with Ryan’s hair, her fingers tracing patterns through the soft strands.

Ryan’s body relaxed visibly. He sighed contentedly, a deep rumble in his chest. It was clear he was enjoying her touch.

The silence that followed was comfortable, but Suzy felt a need to break it. "How was your meeting in court?" she asked softly, her voice low.

Ryan remained silent for a moment, his breathing deepening. Suzy waited patiently, her fingers continuing to weave through his hair.

"I... I was kicked out of the investigation," he finally admitted, his voice low and strained.

Suzy felt a jolt, her fingers halting their movements. "What? Why?" she exclaimed, her voice sharp with disbelief.

"Evan... he found substantial evidence," Ryan replied, his voice heavy with defeat. "Evidence that... well, that I couldn’t provide for months."

Suzy was confused. "How? How did he do it in such a short time?" she questioned, her mind racing.

Ryan shrugged, a weary gesture. "That’s what I’m trying to figure out," he admitted, his voice laced with frustration. "It’s like he was one step ahead of me the entire time."

Suzy continued to play with his hair, her mind swirling with questions. So, this was what Evan had been planning – to oust Ryan from the investigation. But why? What was his motive? What did he stand to gain by sabotaging Ryan’s efforts?

"Do you think he’s involved?" Suzy asked, her voice barely a whisper.

Ryan opened his eyes, looking at her with a troubled expression. "I don’t know," he confessed, his voice raw with uncertainty. "But something doesn’t feel right. It all happened too quickly, too easily."

Suzy, her face etched with a frown, spoke firmly, "Don’t worry, Ryan. We’ll figure this out. We’ll find out who’s behind this mess."

Ryan, his heart pounding, stood up and gently took her hands in his. "Please, Cassandra," he pleaded, his voice urgent, "don’t get involved. I don’t want you to be in danger. I couldn’t bear it if anything happened to you."

Suzy, sensing his fear, softened her gaze. "Okay," she agreed, a reassuring smile gracing her lips. "But I won’t sit idly by while someone tries to hurt you."

Ryan pulled her into a warm embrace, his arms circling her tightly. "Thank you, for always being here for me ," he whispered, burying his face in her hair. "Let’s go inside. The sun is setting, and I don’t want to be out here any longer."

Suzy nodded, her hand resting on his chest. He stood up, stretched out his hand and got her up on her feet. They walked back inside hand in hand.

The air inside the mansion hummed with activity. The scent of lavender and lemon wafted from the direction of the master bedroom, where the maids bustled about, preparing a luxurious soak for Ryan and Suzy. In the kitchen, the clatter of pots and pans signaled the preparation of dinner.

Suzy and Ryan, hand in hand, walked through the bustling hallways, their footsteps echoing softly on the marble floors. Finally, they reached their room.

"Leave us," Suzy instructed, her voice firm as they stepped inside.

The maids, startled by her sudden command, scurried away, their eyes cast down. Ryan gently closed the door behind them, the sound of their retreating footsteps fading quickly.

The room, bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun, felt intimate and private. Suzy began to unbutton Ryan’s shirt, her fingers tracing the familiar contours of his chest. He returned the gesture, his hands moving with ease as he helped her shed her clothes. Soon, they stood naked in the center of the room, the cool marble floor slight difference to the warmth of their skin.

The bathtub, a masterpiece of carved marble, overflowed with fragrant water, scented with lavender, lemon and rose petals.

Ryan stepped in first, the warm water enveloping him with a sigh of contentment. He reached out for Suzy, his hand finding her waist and pulling her close.

As they settled into the bath, Ryan gently began to wash Suzy’s hair, his fingers massaging her scalp. Suzy, lost in thought, leaned back against him, the rhythmic motion of his hands a soothing balm to her nerves.

Suddenly, she sat up, her eyes fixed on the ceiling. "Ryan," she began, her voice serious, "I need a study of my own."

Ryan, startled by her sudden shift in mood, looked at her, perplexed. "A study?" he echoed, his brow furrowed.

"Yes," she answered.

"Women don’t have study." Ryan said, slightly frowning his brows.

" I know, but I’m not just any woman," Suzy said trying to convince him. " I’m your wife. There’s a difference."

" hmmm," he murmured as his expression became cheerful again.

"Ryan," she continued. "The orphanage jubilee is fast approaching, and I need a conducive environment to work. I want to turn my room into a live-in study."

Ryan chuckled, a low rumble in his chest. "A live-in study?" he questioned, amusement dancing in his eyes. "What on earth is a live-in study?"

Suzy sighed, a touch of tiredness in her voice. "It’s a space where I can work and relax when I’m tired. Your study," she gestured towards the door, "Your study is... how do I put it? Serious. Very serious. All dark wood and intimidating bookshelves. I don’t want mine to be like that."

Ryan smiled. "Really, Is that so?"

Suzy nodded, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "Yes! I want to fill it with books, plants, and maybe even a cozy reading nook or any other thing I could think of later."

Ryan, understanding dawning on him, threw his head back and laughed, the sound echoing through the room. He pulled her close, burying his face in her hair, inhaling the sweet fragrance of lavender and rose that rinsed her hair.

"Fine, whatever my duchess desires," he murmured, his voice a low growl against her skin.

Suzy smiled, content in his embrace. The tension that had been building within her began to ease, replaced by a quiet sense of anticipation for the transformation of her room.
