Chapter 134 - Hundred And Thirty Four

Chapter 134: Chapter Hundred And Thirty Four

Suzy collapsed onto her bed, her heart heavy with sorrow. She stared at the ceiling, her mind racing. "What just happened? What went wrong? What was that for?" she wondered aloud, her voice barely a whisper.

A single tear escaped her eye, rolling down her cheek. She traced the path of the tear with her finger, her touch gentle and comforting. She glanced at her finger, now stained with her tears, and a bitter chuckle escaped her lips. It quickly turned into a forced laugh, a desperate attempt to mask the pain. But the dam broke, and the tears flowed freely, streaming down her face.

She let herself cry, her sobs echoing through the silent room. She had held back her emotions for a while since she left Ryan’s study, bottling them up until they threatened to consume her. Now, she allowed herself to feel the pain, to let it wash over her.

"Crying isn’t a sign of weakness," she whispered to herself. "It’s a sign of strength."

She spoke softly, trying to soothe her own troubled mind. "He isn’t worth your tears, Suzy. How dare he dismiss me in that manner? I’ll make him pay for this."

The words offered little comfort, but she clung to them, hoping they would hold her together. As the tears continued to flow, her body grew heavy, and her eyelids drooped. Soon, she drifted off to sleep, her mind finally at rest.

The first rays of sunlight kissed Suzy’s face, gently coaxing her awake. She stretched lazily, her body feeling heavy from the previous night’s tears. With a sigh, she swung her legs over the bed and stood up.

As she walked to the window, the cheerful chirping of birds filled the air, bringing a smile to her face as she watched them flit from branch to branch. A gentle knock interrupted her peaceful moment.

"Who is it?" she called out.

"It’s Doris, Milady. I’m here to help you get ready," came the reply.

"Come in," Suzy said, and the door creaked open.

Doris stepped into the room, a warm smile on her face. She began to assist Suzy with her morning routine, helping her bathe and dress.

"A simple gown, Milady? And your hair pulled back in a low bun?" Doris asked, a hint of surprise in her voice.

Suzy nodded. "Yes, that will do. I’m planning a busy day. I don’t want my dressing to my productivity today."

" Of course, Milady." Doris said as she she started her work.

She finished styling Suzy’s hair, securing it with a delicate bow. "What are your plans for today, Milady?" she inquired.

"After breakfast, I’ll head to the library," Suzy replied. "I need to begin preparations for the orphanage jubilee. Then, I’ll spend some time in the garden. A bit of fresh air will help clear my mind."

Doris smiled. "That sounds wonderful, Milady. I’ll have tea and pastries ready for you in the garden."

"That’s very thoughtful of you, Doris," Suzy said, grateful for her maid’s kindness.

"Anything for you, Milady," Doris replied, her voice filled with sincerity.

With her morning routine complete, Suzy descended the grand staircase, ready for breakfast.

The clinking of silverware echoed through the dining room. Ryan, already seated, was deep into his breakfast. "Your Grace," Suzy greeted, her voice barely a whisper, bowing averting her eyes from his gaze.

Ryan, his expression a mix of regret and resignation, began to speak, "Duchess, about last night—"

But before he could finish, Suzy interrupted, calling out to Noah, "Please move my chair back to its original place."

Noah, caught between two powerful figures, glanced at Ryan for permission. A subtle nod from Ryan was all the encouragement he needed. With a swift movement, he adjusted the seating arrangement, returning the dining room to its usual configuration.

Suzy, ignoring the tension in the air, took her seat and began to eat. A heavy silence settled over the room, broken only by the soft clinking of silverware.

Finally, Ryan broke the silence, his voice laced with uncertainty, "Duchess, about last night, I—"

"Your Grace," Suzy interrupted, her tone firm, "Can we simply enjoy our breakfast?"

She continued eating, her focus solely on her meal. Ryan let out a long, exasperated sigh, his mind racing. He knew she had every right to be angry with him, but the silence between them was suffocating.

As she finished her breakfast, Suzy stood up and called for Noah. "Let’s go to the library," she said, her voice devoid of emotion. " I have a buzy day ahead of me."

Noah followed her without question.

"If you will excuse me, Your Grace." Suzy said as she left.

"Duch..." but she was gone.

Left alone, Ryan stared at the empty chair where Suzy had sat. He knew their relationship is getting strained, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that she would not forgive him and if he tries to explain, if she knows the reason, she would hate him more.

He dropped his cutlery on the plate then asked himself " what do I do?"

——————-

Suzy, her dark eyes scanning the grand hallway, paused before Noah. Her voice, quiet yet firm, carried through the hushed air. "Noah, what did you observe about Evan during your watch?"

Noah stepped forward. "Your Grace, Lord Evan seemed to have a disagreement with Lord Byron yesterday. Their animosity has been evident for some time."

Suzy’s brow furrowed, a hint of concern in her eyes. "A fight?"

Noah nodded, confirming her suspicion. "Yes, Your Grace. After leaving His Grace’s study, Lord Evan sought solace in the Red District, likely to alleviate his frustrations."

Suzy’s expression turned thoughtful. " Interesting, what else?"

"He returned late last night and has remained secluded in his chambers since. His absence at breakfast was quite noticeable."

Suzy thanked Noah, her gaze distant. "Thank you, Noah. Continue your vigil."

Noah bowed respectfully. "As you wish, Your Grace."

With a final nod, Suzy dismissed him. As Noah retreated, she turned and continued her journey to the library, her mind occupied by the recent events.
