Chapter 112: Chapter Hundred And Twelve

Knock,

knock,

knock.

The sound startled Suzy from her intense reading causing her to put down the book on her laps.

"Enter." She said her voice a bit hoarse from disuse.

Noah entered inside, he bowed with his hand in a fist across his chest. A sign of respect.

" Your Grace." He greeted.

Suzy took the teacup placed on the side table before her, swirling the contents of the tea, her movements slow and deliberate as she hit the spoon on the rim of the cup causing a clicking sound.

"Report," she said, her voice soft and low.

Noah nodded, his expression turning serious. "Baron Carew is among one of the most influential nobles in the kingdom. He was in a social club that consists of Duke Charles Ryan’s father, Count Edmun your father, Viscount Lewis Montgomery, and two other members who are deceased," he replied.

Suzy put down the cup on the table, her eyes widening in shock. "Hmmm, interesting and what about Baron Carew himself?" she repeated, her voice barely a whisper.

Noah nodded, his eyes filled with a mixture of sadness and anger. "He hasn’t been seen since the death of the three members," he continued. "But I got information from a source that he would be attending a masquerade ball this evening."

Suzy raised an eyebrow, her expression filled with curiosity. "Whose masquerade ball?" she asked, her voice gaining momentum.

Noah smiled, his eyes filled with a mixture of amusement. "Miss Eleanor Montgomery," he replied.

Suzy put her hand on her chin, pondering why that name sounded familiar. Then it struck her. "That’s the shameless bitch who feels Ryan belongs to her," she said, her voice low more like a murmur with a hint of annoyance and disgust.

Noah told Suzy, "I managed to get an invitation." He brought out the invitation, saying, "The ball is for couples, so everyone invited should come in pairs." He handed the invitation to Suzy.

Suzy’s eyes widened in surprise. "How did you manage to get an invitation in a short period of time?" she asked, curiosity accompanying her surprised expression.

Noah smiled, his face lit up with pride. "I have my sources your grace besides It’s the perfect opportunity to find out what Baron Carew is up to," he replied.

Suzy thought about it. She knew that she would have to tell Ryan about the ball, but she was afraid that he wouldn’t agree. She had been avoiding him lately, and she wasn’t sure how he would react.

Just then, Davis came in, apologizing for the interruption. "Your Grace," he said, bowing with respect. "His Grace requests your presence in his study."

Suzy stood up, straightening her dress. She took a deep breath and turned to leave the room.

As she entered the study, she saw Ryan sitting at his desk, his eyes fixed on a document. He looked up as she entered.

He couldn’t help but be captivated by her serene beauty. Her hair, braided into patterns, framed her face like a delicate crown. A single ribbon, tied in a bow, held the ends in place, adding a touch of elegance.

Her dress, a simple shift with a V-neckline, hugged her curves gently. The fabric, a soft shade of ivory, seemed to glow against her skin. Ryan could see the detailed patterns woven into the material, a testament to the skill of the artisan who had created it.

"Take a seat duchess," he said, his voice filled with warmth.

Suzy took her seat, waiting to hear what he wanted to say to her .

Ryan handed her a key. "Here," he said, stretching his hands.

Suzy took the key, looking at him with surprise. "What is this for?" she asked, taking the key with confusion in her eyes.

Ryan smiled. "It’s the key to the duchy safe," he replied. "I am making it the duty of the duchess."

Suzy raised an eyebrow giving him a confused look. She couldn’t believe that Ryan was giving her the key to the duchy safe.

"I trust you can handle the finances of the duchy," Ryan continued. " I have seen your intelligence and dedication and I know they are in capable hands."

Suzy nodded. "Thank you," she said, her voice filled with emotion. "I won’t let you down."

She hesitated a bit, her hand hovering over the highly decorated, gold-embossed envelope. She knew the moment was right, but a wave of apprehension washed over her. Taking a deep breath, she handed the invitation to Ryan, her heart pounding in her chest.

"What’s this?" Ryan asked, his voice laced with curiosity.

"It’s an invitation to a masquerade ball," Suzy replied, her voice barely a whisper.

Ryan’s eyes scanned the invitation, his expression neutral. But when he saw the host’s name, his smile faded, replaced by a look of distaste. "Eleanor Montgomery?" he muttered.

"Yes," Suzy said, her voice trembling slightly. " she’s organizing a masquerade ball for her birthday."

"I know, she does it every year but I’m not going," Ryan declared firmly, his tone leaving no room for argument.

Suzy’s heart sank. She had hoped he would agree giving her an opportunity to see Baron Carew. "But Ryan, i have already collected the invitation, what will people think when..."

"No," Ryan interrupted, his voice rising. "I’m not going to any ball. You are going to return that invitation the same way you got it."

Suzy felt a surge of anger. She had been so excited about the ball, and now Ryan was ruining it. "How can you be so selfish?" she exclaimed, her voice filled with frustration.

Ryan’s eyes narrowed. "Don’t you dare accuse me of being selfish," he said. "You agreed to something on my behalf without my knowledge or my consent."

Suzy stood up, her anger boiling over. "You’re so stubborn!" she shouted, her voice echoing through the study. "I can’t believe you’re trying to turn this into a fight. Don’t worry about it, I’ll go alone."

With that, Suzy stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind her. Ryan was left alone, his heart heavy with regret. He knew he had been too harsh, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that attending the ball was a bad idea
