Chapter 732: This meeting gift, is really different from others.

Lin Fu thought the father and son were worrying about Lord Pei and reassured them with a smile, "The old man is in good health, still teaching the children how to box when he has time..."

Pei Qingci was astonished, "My grandfather teaches people how to box?"

"Indeed," Lin Fu replied with a smile, "The old man really does box well, so vigorously that everyone loves to watch."

Pei Qingci: "..." Was this the same grandfather who was always so serious and unsmiling?

He instinctively looked at his father, Pei Yuan, and noticed that his expression remained unchanged; Pei Qingci lowered his eyes.

Soon, the three of them reached the foot of the mountain.

A row of pigsties looked quite imposing.

Not far from the pigsties were several earth houses which didn’t seem quite right to call them that since the earthen walls were topped with a few layers of bricks and tiles.

Winter was coming, and not only the people living in the earth houses but also the members of the brigade started to get busy, some collecting firewood, some storing up food...

So, for the time being, there weren’t many people around the earth houses.

"Lord Pei should be busy in the pigsty now, I’ll take you there," Lin Fu said as he led Pei Yuan and his son to one of the pigsties.

Lord Pei was skillfully shoveling pig manure into a wooden bucket next to him, one shovel at a time.

"Lord Pei," Lin Fu called out.

Lord Pei turned around.

Seeing the two people beside Lin Fu, he stood there, struck dumb.

Pei Yuan, upon seeing his long-lost father, was overwhelmed with complex emotions he couldn’t vent, his eyes watering as he called out, "Dad."

Pei Qingci followed, "Grandfather."

Lord Pei stared at his son and grandson for several seconds, then suddenly took off the clothes he was wearing and tossed them, along with the shovel, to Pei Yuan.

"Come, work."

Pei Yuan: "..." This welcome gift was truly one-of-a-kind!

Pei Qingci was somewhat bewildered.

"Qingci is thin, you should eat more to build yourself up," Lord Pei, with an emotionless face, said this tender remark, though it was hard to discern any care in his voice.

Pei Qingci was pleasantly surprised, "I’ll listen to Grandfather."

But, thinking of his father’s chronically ailing leg, he pursed his lips, wanting to go over and help.

"Dad, I’ll join you."

Pei Yuan refused, "No need for your help, keep your grandfather company for a while."

The old lord was educating his unfilial son; how could asking the son for help be considered proper?

Facing his father’s irrefutable expression, Pei Qingci had no choice but to give up and began talking to his grandfather.

After many years apart, there was much to talk about.

Lord Pei learned of his children and grandchildren’s lives over the years through his grandson’s words, his face still serious and unsmiling, yet a flash of contentment passed through his eyes.

He had thought that his children and grandchildren were too reluctant to give up their good days and had severed ties with this old man.

Unexpectedly...

The pride of the Pei family was unbroken!

Lord Pei, hearing from his grandson that Pei Yuan’s leg had been injured and was no longer as agile, glanced unconsciously at the person in the pigsty.

Pei Yuan struggled to suppress the pain in his legs, but still betrayed a trace of it.

He smiled bitterly.

These legs, how would he continue to battle on the fields and serve his country in the future?!

Noticing his father’s gaze, Pei Yuan didn’t want Lord Pei to see anything amiss, and his movements became far more agile.

Lord Pei’s expression darkened.

Thinking of that capable girl, his demeanor relaxed, and his typically serious and unsmiling face softened.

Pei Qingci thought Grandfather was happy because of the family reunion and the corners of his mouth lifted in a smile.

"Grandfather, my dad and I have come to take you home, this year our family can finally have a reunion for the New Year."

Lord Pei was a stern man, but he was also a lonely old man; how could he not yearn for his descendants all these years?

He nodded, gazing out at the endless mountains, his voice deep, "Yes."

At last, they were reunited!

The Pei family had visitors, followed by several more groups of people from Shuangshan Brigade.

One after another, the earth houses at the foot of the mountain emptied.

That day, a mother and son came looking for Chu Yue.

Chu Yue watched as his old comrades from the past few years left one by one, and he was anything but calm.

However, the decision about him hadn’t come down from above, so he could only wait patiently.

In November, although the temperature had dropped, the presence of the sun encouraged everyone to go outside to bask in its warmth.

Chu Yue sat at the door reading a book.

Suddenly, a figure lunged toward him.

Followed by a choked voice, "Dad."

The visitor hugged Chu Yue tightly, tears streaming out of his eyes.

The words of self-consolation he’d comforted himself with—to be strong—had long since been tossed behind his ears.

With dad around, why need to be strong?

Chu Yue’s body shuddered, the book falling to the ground.

"Son, my son?" he said, his eyes brimming with tears.

Unseen for ten years, the now-grown-up young man let go of his father and nodded with red eyes.

"It’s me, Dad, Mom and I have come to take you home."

All of a sudden, Chu Yue stood up and walked a couple of steps towards the village, then craned his neck and looked expectantly, "You said Mom? Where is she?"

"Mom walks slowly, she’s still behind," said Chu Yi before he could finish, Chu Yue was already excitedly walking toward the village.

Chu Yi stepped forward to support Chu Yue’s arm.

Chu Yue shook off his son’s hand, "Don’t help me, I’m not so old I can’t walk."

Chu Yi, less pleased, continued to support his father somewhat forcefully, saying, "I want to help. We haven’t seen each other for ten years. I miss my old dad; what’s wrong with helping a bit?"

Since seeing his son, Chu Yue had been in a half-dreamlike state of disbelief.

Being supported by Chu Yi now, he finally felt something real.

Looking at his son from the side, he saw that the boy who had left as a teenager was now a robust young man.

Chu Yue’s eyes reddened with emotion.

"... How have you and your mom been these years?"

The smile at the corner of Chu Yi’s mouth froze slightly; not wanting to talk about those things, he said, "Not too bad."

After he finished speaking, he changed the subject, "Dad, let’s not talk about unhappy things. As long as our family can be reunited, those years are better left unspoken."

Chu Yue paused, then looked at his son.

Chu Yi had already adjusted his emotions, so his father didn’t notice anything.

It was precisely because of this that Chu Yue was even more certain that his wife and child had also had a difficult time these years.

He felt an indescribable discomfort in his heart.

"It’s been hard on you both," Chu Yue said heavily after a long while.

The smile faded from Chu Yi’s face as he simply stated, "I’m okay, but Mom has had it tough. Dad, from now on, be even nicer to her."

His mom wasn’t supposed to suffer so much, as she could have just followed her father’s family’s advice and remarried.

But, she was stubborn and said she had a husband, and her child wouldn’t call another man father...

She had supported him for ten full years with that not-so-broad pair of shoulders.

Chu Yue glared at Chu Yi, "Do you need to tell me that? Of course, I’ll be good to my wife, isn’t that obvious?"

He and his wife had fallen in love freely and had always had a good relationship.

After ten years of long-distance trials, their relationship would only get better.

Just then, a middle-aged woman appeared not far away, being helped along.

She had just overheard Chu Yue’s words.

Looking at her husband, whom she hadn’t seen for a long time, tears shimmered in the woman’s eyes, but she wore a smile on her face.

"I heard everything, oh. If you dare to be bad to me in the future, I’ll take Yiyi and stay away from you," she said.
