Chapter 696: 696 Why are you so humiliating?
Today was Lin Tang’s big wedding, and Jing Ze and Jing Ran also came.
Jing Ran accidentally ate a chili and meant to relieve the spiciness with water, but mistakenly grabbed Jing Ze’s cup and took a big gulp.
It was a strong liquor, spicy and warming, perfect for dispelling cold.
After one gulp, Jing Ran’s face buzzed red.
The flush spread from her face to her neck in just a few seconds.
She had some tolerance to alcohol and didn’t faint, but her mind felt heavy all of a sudden.
When Chen Wanwan turned her head and saw Jing Ran’s flushed face, she was so shocked that the meat from her chopsticks dropped to the ground.
...And the meat was promptly eaten by the village dog that was kept for guarding the place.
"Woof! Woof woof!"
After gulping it down, the dog looked at her expectantly.
Its face asking, any more?
Tears were nearly spilling from Chen Wanwan’s eyes out of pity.
With a wave of her hand, "Go, go, go, no more meat here."
It’s hard enough for us humans to get a bite of meat, you dogs can wait.
Heartache!
The dog sat there for a while, realizing there were no more tasty treats, left with a disheartened doggy face, turning back every three steps.
Chen Wanwan silently moved her bowl to the side, turned her back, and pretended nothing happened.
After a moment, she sneakily turned her head to check if the dog had finally left, then patted her chest.
Assured that her meal was safe, Chen Wanwan looked towards Jing Ran.
She noticed that Jing Ran’s face was so red it was almost smoking.
"Jing Ran?" Chen Wanwan called out.
Jing Ran, with her senses still about her, replied, "What’s up?"
"Are you drunk?"
Jing Ran cupped her face, her eyes strangely clear, "Not at all."
She just felt her head was a little heavy, that’s all.
Not important.
She thought some fresh air would do the trick.
Thinking so, Jing Ran stood up, "I’ll go out for a little bit, be right back."
Seeing her face very red, but her mind clear, Chen Wanwan said, "Okay, just say if you need anything."
Jing Ran nodded, "No worries, it’s safe here in the village."
Feeling her head heavy, she walked slowly.
She left the Lin Family’s door and turned right.
She hadn’t walked far when she smelled a whiff of smoke.
"Cough!" Jing Ran coughed once from the irritation.
She frowned slightly, "Who’s smoking here?"
Xing Zhen had a big question mark over his head.
Looking down at his side, there wasn’t anything particularly large obstructing the view.
Was this girl severely nearsighted?
After snuffing out his cigarette and disposing of the butt, Xing Zhen walked over.
"Come on, I’ll take you inside."
He remembered this little round face; she was quite close to Yingzhou’s wife.
Jing Ran looked up at Xing Zhen.
The man was tall, imposing, with a vibe somewhat similar to Tangtang, but there was a hint of mischief in his eyes and brows.
"Why should I let you take me?" Jing Ran asked, not understanding.
Xing Zhen met her gaze.
Her eyes were crystal clear.
So bright, as if free of any impurity.
"Are you not nearsighted?" he asked out of the blue.
Jing Ran glared, "You’re the one who’s nearsighted! My eyesight is great, why are you insulting me like this?"
This was as if he was implying she was blind.
Xing Zhen’s brow furrowed, "When did I insult you?"
He couldn’t deny that he had a soft spot for those with clear eyes, but that didn’t mean he was willing to be unjustly blamed.
Jing Ran patted her face, trying to clear her head, her lips puckering in dissatisfaction.
"Not yet, look at my eyes..."
She stood on tiptoe, staring straight at Xing Zhen.
Her eyes were filled with his reflection.
"Everyone at home says my eyes are very bright, does that look nearsighted to you? If this isn’t an insult, what is?"
When Xing Zhen saw himself reflected in those clear eyes, he was briefly taken aback and quickly looked away.
A moment later, he looked back.
"...I was standing right there, and you asked who was smoking. Wasn’t that your question? I’m so tall, standing right there, and you didn’t see me. Asking such a superfluous question, I deduced there was something wrong with your eyesight. Am I wrong?"
His argument was logical and well-founded, leaving Jing Ran with no rebuttal.
Especially when her mind was groggy, she got stuck because of the ribbing.
She abruptly felt choked up.
"...I’m truly sorry."
Xing Zhen watched the little round face react slowly but dutifully apologize, a hint of laughter flashing through his sharp eyes.
"If the apology isn’t sincere, better not to speak at all."
Jing Ran, angered, "Don’t push your luck."
Xing Zhen smiled ambiguously, "What if I push my luck? What about it?"
Jing Ran’s face puffed up with anger.
In the man’s eyes, she was adorable.
"Originally you have a little round face, now it’s even rounder," Xing Zhen said with a chuckle in a low voice.
His voice was so low, and since Jing Ran had been drinking, her brain wasn’t reacting quickly and didn’t catch what he said. She asked, "What did you just say?"
Xing Zhen shook his head, "Nothing."
At this point, he would be foolish not to notice that the little round face in front of him was befuddled from drinking.
"Are you drunk?"
Jing Ran waved her hand, a slight frown on her face, "No, why does everyone keep saying that? I’m totally sober."
Xing Zhen knew better than to reason with a drunkard and said, "Let’s go inside together."
"You go ahead, my head feels a bit heavy, I’ll get some fresh air first," she said earnestly.
Xing Zhen: "..." She’s not drunk?!
Jing Ze heard about Jing Ran’s condition from Chen Wanwan and, fearing his sister might run into trouble, hurried out to look for her.
Seeing her safe and sound, he patted his chest in relief.
"Ranran, how did you end up here?"
Jing Ran saw her brother and unveiled a silly smile.
"Hehe, I’m out here for some air."
She had only drunk a little and the scent of alcohol had mostly dissipated after a while.
The temperature outside was low, and the flush on her face had also faded.
Jing Ze didn’t realize at first that Jing Ran had accidentally drunk some alcohol and felt groggy.
"What’s so great about getting air? Aren’t you afraid your face will freeze and lose all expression? Come on, let’s go in," he said.
Jing Ran got up from the stone bench with force and stumbled, her hand instinctively scrambling to find a point of support.
She snatched hold of the clothes of the young man in front of her.
The momentum threw her into Xing Zhen’s arms.
A warm, soft fragrance enveloped him, Xing Zhen froze for a moment before quickly pulling her away.
His gaze then suddenly darkened.
Jing Ze’s brows twitched fiercely at the sight.
He came forward to hold Jing Ran.
"Ranran, what’s wrong, do your legs hurt?" He brushed aside the recent mishap, asking with concern.
Jing Ran shook her head, "No, I’m just a bit muddled."
Jing Ze touched her forehead, "Why are you muddled? Are you alright?"
"I’m fine, absolutely nothing wrong."
Jing Ze, his mind at ease but complex feelings brewing, thanked Xing Zhen and took Jing Ran back to the Lin Family.
After walking a few steps, Jing Ran, slow to respond, turned her head to see that he was still standing there, his gaze sharp and focused, inexplicably handsome.
She smiled faintly.
Xing Zhen felt a surge of simple-hearted charm wash over him and the corner of his mouth lifted in pleasure, softening his expression.
Just then, a young man came running over.
His lips were still shiny with grease.
"Captain, why are you still here? Hurry up and go eat," he said.
Xing Zhen: "Mhm."
Noting that his boss seemed to be in a good mood, the newcomer added, "Captain, when are we heading back?"
"In another two days."
Such a specific answer? The runner’s eyes darted about, and he mumbled sotto voce, "Captain, are you in a really good mood?"
Xing Zhen raised his eyebrows.
In a really good mood?
He?!
That was rare.
