Chapter 500: 500 is too low
Gu Yingzhou helped Lin Tang move her things to the Technology Department, where Ling Lei had been waiting for quite some time.
Upon seeing the two, a teasing smile appeared on her face.
"Factory Director Gu has arrived. Please, take a seat and enjoy the fan while I pour some water for you."
The office of the Technology Department was quite spacious with many desks, all covered with various books and materials, looking rather messy.
Portraits of great leaders hung on the wall, and on the other side was a silk banner.
Against the wall, several thermos flasks rested on a desk.
The workspace had a strong working atmosphere.
Lin Tang pointed to an empty spot and asked with a smile, "Ling, is that my place?"
The spot was near the window, which was slightly open, letting the brisk wind into the stifling office and adding a touch of coolness.
Hearing this, Ling Lei turned her head, slapped her own forehead, and replied, "Right, right, that’s your desk. I’ve wiped it down inside and out, you can just put your things there."
Lin Tang thanked her, "Thank you, Ling."
Ling Lei waved her hand dismissively, saying generously, "No need to thank me. I’m several years older than you, so what’s the big deal about helping you wipe down a desk when you call me ’sister’?"
As the two were talking, Gu Yingzhou had already taken out all of Lin Tang’s office supplies.
He saw the mat that seemed meant to be laid on the desk, the delicate bamboo holder for pens, the little shelf for sundries, the thin blanket...
Confusion appeared in Gu Yingzhou’s eyes.
Was a young lady’s desk really this complicated?
With a puzzled mind, he quickly laid out the desk cloth with adept movements.
Afterward, he placed the other items with serious attention.
Once done, he called out to Lin Tang with a clear voice, "Tangtang, is this how it’s supposed to be set up?"
It was his first time helping someone organize a desk, a young girl no less, and he wasn’t sure how well he had done.
Lin Tang walked over and saw that Gu Yingzhou had already set up the desk, causing her to pause slightly.
"You’ve already done it, huh? It’s pretty good, even better than if I had done it myself," she complimented as soon as she spoke.
She was suddenly reminded of the day she moved into her dormitory in university in the future. One of her roommates had been sent there by her boyfriend.
The guy entered the girls’ dormitory and, acting like a big shot, didn’t even bother to help his girlfriend make her bed or clean the desk, let alone lift his behind from the stool.
All he did was yap away, constantly hurrying the girl to go out to eat.
His behavior was utterly irksome.
At that time, it made all of them detest men.
In the end, she couldn’t stand it anymore and took off her mask, using her face scarred with blemishes to scare away the ridiculous guy, finally getting some peace and quiet.
Of course, she paid a price for it, being isolated and asked to move out of the dormitory.
Frankly, she had no expectations for dorm life and preferred living alone. When the counselor suggested it, she promptly left.
But back to the present.
Seeing that Lin Tang was very satisfied, Gu Yingzhou’s lips curved slightly upward as he said, "You get busy, I’ll be leaving now, I’ll come to pick you up after work."
Having said that, he nodded towards Ling Lei, turned, and left.
Lin Tang watched the tall and straight figure of the man as he left, a sweet smile spreading across her face.
Ling Lei saw the young couple being all sweet and lovey-dovey and was reminded of her own days of dating her partner back home.
Snapping back to reality, she put an arm around Lin Tang’s shoulder.
"Let’s go, handle the official business first. I know your guy is handsome, but there’s no need to keep gazing at his retreat. If you really can’t help it, wait until after work to get your fill," Ling teased.
Lin Tang was unflustered, not even blushing as she nodded earnestly, "Mhm, Ling’s words make sense."
Ling Lei paused, realizing that instead of successfully teasing her, she’d been stopped in her tracks by the young girl’s response, caught between laughter and tears.
"You, huh," Ling Lei said.
Lin Tang just shrugged, "Hmm-hmm!"
The two chatted and laughed as they made their way to the Financial Office.
Lin Tang submitted the job transfer paperwork.
The financial staff member carefully reviewed the transfer documents, checking all the stamps and signatures. After confirming that everything was in order, he accepted the documents.
"I’ve accepted the material," he said, "and from next month, your salary will be issued according to the new position."
Lin Tang smiled and expressed his gratitude, "Thank you, Comrade."
The finance employee didn’t dare to take it easy and quickly responded, "To serve the people."
Everyone knew that getting into the Technology Department was even harder than getting into the Broadcasting Station. It was quite a stroke of luck for Lin Tang to have made it into the Technology Department.
Seeing the hefty 35 yuan on the salary sheet, the financial clerk couldn’t help but be amazed.
After all, Comrade Lin Tang wasn’t even eighteen yet, and to be earning more than many young and middle-aged workers was something many would envy.
Once the paperwork was done, Lin Tang and Ling Lei left the Financial Office.
Dealing with these trifles was indeed time-consuming; by the time they were done, it was already the afternoon.
Feeling grateful to Ling Lei for the amount of time she had spent on his behalf, Lin Tang smiled and said, "Sister Ling, do you have other plans? How about I treat you to a meal?"
Ling Lei didn’t like to take advantage of others, so she declined.
"No need, I still have some work to do," she said.
Lin Tang knew that her work wasn’t particularly urgent; if it had been, she wouldn’t have been accompanying him around all this time.
Seeing that Ling Lei didn’t want to take advantage of his offer, Lin Tang didn’t press the issue further.
After they parted ways, he headed to the cafeteria.
The cafeteria had just opened, and the dishes were already set out.
Pushing open the door of the Canteen, the aroma wafted out.
Lin Tang went straight to the second floor.
Meat was scarce, and the cafeteria would only serve Braised Pork once in a long while. Today was naturally one of the days without it.
There was only one dish with radish and pork, with more radish than meat.
Lin Tang asked Auntie Fat to serve him some of the radish and pork dish, and he also got a few vegetarian dishes before planning to head back.
Before he could leave, Auntie Fat called out to him, "Hey, Secretary Lin, I’ve got something to ask you."
Lin Tang stopped in his tracks and turned around, "What is it?"
Auntie Fat leaned forward, resting on the window sill.
"When will your Sauce Factory start producing the mushroom sauce again?
My child can’t eat spicy food, and after eating nothing but Bean Sauce, he reeks of beans. He’s been craving that mushroom sauce.
I’ve sent my husband to the Sauce Factory to ask several times, but there’s no mushroom sauce to be found.
Secretary Lin, can you give me a definite answer on when it will be available? I’ll have my husband buy a few bottles when it’s back."
Without it, the kids at home are going to start fussing."
Lin Tang wasn’t involved in the management of the Sauce Factory and didn’t know too much about its workings.
He had only heard from his second brother and sister-in-law that the quantity of mushrooms they received was dwindling, and eventually, it had become too scarce to sustain production, leading to a temporary halt in the production of mushroom sauce.
Li Xiuli was currently leading a group of women in figuring out the cultivation of fungi, and once they worked it out, they would resume production.
These thoughts went through his mind, and Lin Tang replied with a smile, "Because the quantity of mushrooms is too small, we haven’t been able to produce mushroom sauce on a large scale.
However, I do have a few bottles myself. How about I give some to you?"
He usually preferred spicy and pickled vegetables, so the mushroom sauce was always left untouched.
Auntie Fat’s small eyes sparkled with delight, and without any pretense, she smiled and said, "Oh, I couldn’t possibly impose."
After saying that, she nodded her head, "Then I’ll have to thank Secretary Lin."
Lin Tang waved it off, "No need for thanks."
Auntie Fat then remembered the gossip about Min Feiying from the Broadcasting Station and, stretching her neck, whispered, "Secretary Lin, how do you get along with the new Comrade Min who just joined the Broadcasting Station? I heard she’s difficult to deal with, is that true?"
Their Canteen was well-informed, knowing everything that happened, big or small, within the factory.
It wasn’t only the arrival of a newcomer at the Broadcasting Station they knew about; they even knew about a female worker from the first factory who secretly kissed someone.
