Chapter 356: 356 root deeply downwards, bloom upwards
Lin Tang: "..."
Was she... being disliked by her mother?
Lin Tang agreed and took Tang Kairui out.
The village had new roads, and its entire appearance was transformed.
No more stones or various animal droppings could be seen on the road, which was much cleaner.
Not only that, but the Sauce Factory was thriving, and everyone had something to look forward to. No longer were there faces filled with hardship, instead, there was an air of positivity and progress.
At the entrance to the village, a new pond had been dug, with plans to find someone to raise fish in it.
Lianhua had been planted earlier, and now they were ’breaking the surface in patches, with the lotus buds yearning for their delicate blooms.’
"Time passes so quickly, and the changes in the village are huge..." Lin Tang reflected.
When she first returned, the village was like most others, where everyone merely hoped for three full meals a day.
Now they had started to care about other needs.
Tang Kairui’s lips curled into an almost imperceptible smile.
"You’ve been working for several months now, and with so many people in the village busy, of course, there would be significant changes."
He chuckled to himself, perhaps Lin Xiaotang, this silly little girl, didn’t realize she had already become the backbone of the villagers.
It was not hard to understand, after all, Lin Xiaotang was the one who helped them lead better lives.
"That’s true," Lin Tang smiled with amusement.
Tang Kairui, looking at the genuine smile on her face, suddenly said, "...seeing the village improve, does it make you happy?"
"Aren’t you happy?" Lin Tang countered.
"Of course, I’m happy too," Tang Kairui answered.
He paused for a few seconds before saying, "What I meant to ask was, is helping the villagers lead better lives your dream?"
Otherwise, why would Lin Xiaotang, who had a job and a bright future, go out of her way to find opportunities for the village?!
Tang Kairui desired to understand Lin Tang, to draw closer to her heart.
To join her in fulfilling her dreams.
That would be quite interesting, wouldn’t it!
"A dream?" Lin Tang laughed briefly and then shook her head, "It can’t be called a dream."
"It’s just going with the flow."
"The brigade needed change, and I just happened to know some sauce-making recipes. It wasn’t deliberate; it was just good timing."
She wasn’t that noble.
Whether proposing to build a Sauce Factory or fixing the roads, it was the Brigade Department taking the lead; she merely contributed an idea.
Upon hearing this, Tang Kairui was slightly startled and then laughed.
"Lin Xiaotang, you will never learn to be cunning."
Always so straightforward, your candor makes one’s heart soften.
Lin Tang retorted sharply.
"Aren’t you the same? You are what you are.
The bigger the lie, the harder it is to keep up appearances. You can deceive others, but not yourself.
Don’t you think so?"
The smile on Tang Kairui’s face deepened.
That small canine tooth almost showed itself again.
He realized it in time and quickly restrained his smile.
"I feel the same way!" he said earnestly, "Lin Xiaotang, the way you are is good. I hope you never change."
Lin Tang rolled her eyes and snorted.
"Wishful thinking!"
"Time won’t stop, rivers won’t cease to flow. How could I possibly not change?"
"I’m already growing so slowly, can’t you at least hope something good for me?"
As she spoke, a slight annoyance flickered across her small face.
She was indescribably charming.
Tang Kairui could only laugh at himself.
He looked down at Lin Tang.
Seeing she barely reached his chin.
His eyes brimmed with laughter, "Hmm, indeed a bit short."
Before Lin Tang could get angry, he quickly changed the subject,
"But you’re not yet eighteen, you should still be able to grow, eating more meat might add a few more centimeters."
Lin Tang felt somewhat consoled.
She wasn’t greedy; reaching one meter sixty-five would be enough.
Just not like last time, barely making it over one meter sixty.
"At least you say the right things."
After touring the village, Lin Tang checked the time on her wristwatch.
It was break time.
"It’s getting late, I should go back and rest, and you should too. Don’t wander around anymore," she said.
With that, Lin Tang waved her hand and headed home.
Watching her retreating figure, Tang Kairui’s handsome face bore an uncontrollable smile.
That little tiger tooth of his peeked out again.
Even her leaving figure radiated an indescribable exuberance.
The Tang family.
Tan Xue slightly furrowed her brows when she saw her son only just coming home.
"Where have you been? Why are you back so late? There’s still food in the pot."
She didn’t like her son hanging out with the village folks; her family was different from the rest of the village.
Tang Kairui knew his mother’s ways.
Put nicely, it was a sense of superiority; put not so nicely, she was out of touch.
Tang Kairui said indifferently, "I’ve eaten already."
Tan Xue wore a skeptical look, her eyes inquisitive.
"Eaten already? Where did you eat?"
"I did a favor for Second Brother Lin, and his family invited me over for a meal," Tang Kairui explained.
"Oh, it’s the Lin family," Tan Xue’s disapproval in her eyes faded, as she gave a fair assessment, "That little girl is not bad."
In the whole brigade, there weren’t many young girls she approved of; Lin Tang was one of them.
Tang Kairui snorted with a hint of sarcasm.
"That’s not what you used to say."
He referred to the time when Lin Tang had just "failed" and had not yet become the pride of the brigade.
Tan Xue felt a bit discomfited by such a blunt confrontation from her son.
"...Back then, there wasn’t much about Lin Tang that I could praise," she retorted.
It wasn’t just Lin Tang who was good at studying; there were plenty of young girls who were good at it.
There were too many for her to praise.
Tang Kairui was left speechless.
He went straight to his room.
No more talking!
After all, his mom could always argue her point.
Tan Xue was dissatisfied inside.
To Tang’s father, she said, "Look at your fine son."
He was getting more and more out of control.
She was outwardly displeased, yet deep down, thrilled to have such a smart and good-looking son.
Tang’s father spread his hands and said lightly, "Kairui didn’t say anything wrong, what’s there to make such a fuss about?"
Tan Xue pinched him, irritated.
Tang Kairui was oblivious to his parents’ conversation, lying on his bed.
Thinking of something, the teenager suddenly sat up.
He took out a notebook from the bedside table.
Elegantly written on the cover of the notebook were two characters ’Lin Tang’.
The notebook was quite ordinary.
Flipping through a page revealed it was filled with high school knowledge points.
It was a birthday gift from Lin Tang to Tang Kairui when he was in the first year of high school.
Remembering his initial sense of futility upon receiving this birthday gift, the young man flopped back onto the bed, covering his eyes with his arm, his lips curving up into a big smile.
Only Lin Xiaotang would think to give her own notebooks as a birthday present.
The most exasperating thing was—
Among so many gifts, this one had become his favorite.
Tang Kairui turned to the first page of the notebook.
It bore a line of writing.
’No matter where you are or what situation you find yourself in, look towards the dawn, root deeply downward, and bloom upwards.’
This must be a message the girl had given to herself.
Tang Kairui caressed the line with his fingertips and murmured, "Lin Xiaotang, you have finally become the person you wanted to be, and I’m happy for you."
Elsewhere.
Having returned home, Lin Tang washed her face and was just about to go to bed.
Suddenly, a familiar crying voice came through.
"Second Uncle, Second Aunt, my mom has been taken away by the Public Security Bureau. Please help her!"
Lin Xiaojing’s voice was panicked and frantic, startling everyone in the second household of the Lin family.
