Chapter 176: Tuluo Cheng’s Realization
Sitting on a stool by the bed, Yan Bingyang reached out to check Ji Hui’s pulse. After a minute, he withdrew his hand. "I’m going to clean his wounds. Prepare candles and clean cloth."
One of the elite soldiers left the room and soon returned with a candle and a clean cloth. He lit the candle and placed the items on the bedside table.
Yan Bingyang then took out a scalpel from his medicine box. After disinfecting it with alcohol, he looked at the adjutant and asked, "What are you doing? Still not undressing him?"
Snapping out of his daze, the adjutant carefully took off Ji Hui’s clothes and let him lie on his stomach.
Looking at the swollen wounds filled with pus and gore on Ji Hui’s back, Yan Bingyang clicked his tongue. "His life is really tough. He’s still alive with this kind of infection."
The adjutant’s anger surged again. "You—!"
Before he could curse, Yan Bingyang said calmly, "Say one more word, and I will leave this place."
Afraid that nobody could save Ji Hui, the adjutant clenched his fists and shut his eyes. ’As long as I don’t look at his face, I won’t get angry.’
With the room finally silent, Yan Bingyang heated the scalpel over the candle flame. Once it was hot enough, he began cutting away the rotten flesh.
"Bring me the bowl," he ordered without looking up.
Though he disliked him, the adjutant fetched the bowl from the wooden table and placed it on the bed.
While everyone watched his every move, Yan Bingyang carefully cut off the rotten flesh and dropped it into the bowl. He continued until fresh red blood began to flow out from the wounds.
Then, he wet the cloth and washed the blood off Ji Hui’s body. After cleaning the wounds with alcohol, he applied medicine and wrapped them in clean bandages.
Letting out a tired sigh, Yan Bingyang stood and washed his hands in the clean water brought by the inn’s servant.
While drying his hands, he said, "I will prescribe medicine to reduce the fever and prevent infection. Until his wounds scab, don’t let him touch water. If they get infected again, not even Heaven can save him."
Seeing Ji Hui’s complexion had improved significantly, the adjutant fell silent for a long time.
After some thought, he clasped his fists and said, "Physician Yan, please forgive me for my rudeness just now. I didn’t know the height of the mountain and offended you. You, as an honorable man, please don’t argue with a small villain like me."
Yan Bingyang was too lazy to argue and simply wrote the prescription. Handing it to one of the elite soldiers, he said, "Go to the infirmary and get the medicine."
"Yes, Physician Yan."
After packing up his medicine box, Yan Bingyang said, "Let’s go back to the infirmary. I still have a lot of patients to tend to."
As he walked out, the adjutant bowed. "Thank you, Physician Yan."
After Yan Bingyang and his escorts left, the adjutant ordered the servant to clean up the room and then closed the door.
When he saw Tuluo Cheng looking at Ji Hui while lost in thought, the adjutant asked, "Military Advisor, what are you thinking about?"
Snapping out of his thoughts, Tuluo Cheng looked at the adjutant and asked, "Did you see the medicine Physician Yan used the moment he arrived?"
The adjutant shook his head and replied, "I didn’t see it clearly. I only saw him pour out an oval-shaped white pill from a small ceramic bottle."
Noticing Tuluo Cheng’s serious expression, the adjutant asked again, "Military Advisor, why are you asking this?"
Looking at the clueless adjutant, Tuluo Cheng rubbed his aching brows and asked, "Have you never questioned the origin of that strange medicine?"
The adjutant shook his head. "Aren’t all their medicines supplied by the imperial court?"
Tuluo Cheng rolled his eyes inwardly, then patiently explained, "The imperial court stopped sending supplies and fodder to the Feng Army more than two years ago. Do you really think they would send this kind of miraculous medicine to the Feng Army instead of keeping it for themselves?"
Hearing his explanation, the adjutant’s eyes widened in realization. "Military Advisor, are you saying those medicines were created by the Feng Army?"
"Now, in the entire Feng army, Yan Bingyang is the only one with excellent medical skills. Is his medical skills already so advanced that he can develop this kind of medicine?"
Tuluo Cheng shook his head. "No. I believe this kind of miraculous medicine can only come from their so-called Goddess, Fairy Bai."
Just as his words fell, someone knocked on the door.
Knock, knock, knock.
The adjutant signaled Tuluo Cheng to be quiet before he went to open the door.
Opening the door, he saw a servant carrying a tray of food. Stepping aside, he said, "Bring it in."
With his permission, the servant carried the tray into the room. After placing the food on the table, he said, "Guests, please enjoy your meal."
Leaving those words behind, the servant exited and closed the door.
Taking out a silver needle, the adjutant carefully tested the food and water for poison.
After confirming it was safe, he scooped a bowl of thick porridge for Ji Hui. Sitting on a stool beside the bed, he carefully fed Ji Hui.
Noticing Tuluo Cheng hadn’t touched his food, the adjutant said, "Military Advisor, please eat first. The food is not poisonous."
"Mhm." Although he nodded, Tuluo Cheng still didn’t eat.
When the adjutant finished feeding Ji Hui, he placed the empty bowl on the table and sat across from Tuluo Cheng.
Scooping a bowl of porridge for him, the adjutant placed it in front of Tuluo Cheng and asked, "Is something troubling you, Military Advisor? You have seemed lost in thought since Physician Yan left."
Tuluo Cheng looked away from the bowl of porridge and met the adjutant’s gaze.
After a long silence, he finally said, "After staying here for two days, I have realized something."
