93: Chapter 21 America’s People United Like Never Before!
A terrifying live broadcast.
The robber appears on camera, broadcasting an execution.
Even the smallest bullet, if close enough, can easily blow a head off.
ABC TV station, of course, understood how outrageous their live broadcast of the kidnappers was, but commercial companies only pursue profits.
When the profits are big enough, as they are now, ABC is completely fearless of the law.
If there’s going to be a lawsuit, then just wait until the live broadcast is over!
“What in the hell are you doing, Robert, stop that damned live broadcast right now!”
Even through the phone, the fury in Joel Dracula’s voice made Robert Egger frown.
He hadn’t expected Dracula, a fellow Shamite Wanderer, to be so agitated.
Is it not just a broadcast?
We at ABC are broadcasting a kidnapping case, what does that have to do with you?
“Relax, Dracula, those kidnappers just killed a pauper, no need to be so worked up.”
The ABC TV station is a media company under the Disney group, and as an interest spokesman for a Shamite Wanderer capital consortium at Disney, Robert Egger also holds a certain status in the underworld, and he is not one of those small characters who act as dogs for others.
He also didn’t think Dracula’s words needed to be taken seriously.
We are all Shamite Wanderers, but not from the same small circle, we don’t cross paths much, why should I stop the live broadcast just because you say so?
“Don’t talk about one pauper dying, even if ten thousand died I wouldn’t blink an eye, but my child was kidnapped by those kidnappers!
Robert, you must help me, make that damned live broadcast stop!”
Dracula had no choice, he could get the Democratic Party to run around and help rescue his son.
But the ABC controlled by Shamite Wanderer capital was not something he could easily influence.
That’s why he had no choice but to make the call to Robert Egger.
“Your son was kidnapped by the kidnappers?”
Robert Egger almost couldn’t hold back a laugh.
What a stroke of luck!
“That’s really too bad, Dracula, I’ll have my people turn off the live broadcast right away.”
How could it possibly be turned off?
I’ll have ABC spread the news of your son’s kidnapping across America!
Even as Shamite Wanderers, we are still divided into camps!
“Thank you, Robert, you’re a good man.”
Although Dracula found it a little odd that Robert agreed so quickly without imposing any conditions.
But the elder Dracula still believed the words of this younger kin.
After all, we’re of the same kind, and even if there are occasional conflicts, we would still lend a hand in life-and-death matters.
After hanging up the phone, Robert stared at the cellphone in his hand and sneered coldly.
Old coot, who do you think you are?
Asking for a favor without proper attitude, why would I lift a finger for you?
Even if you begged me properly I wouldn’t help, but not helping doesn’t mean you shouldn’t ask!
“Tell the ABC people to release the news that the Dracula Family’s son has also been kidnapped, I want that old coot to learn what manners are.”
The struggle at the upper echelons is that simple.
I agreed to help you, but it was just lip service, and I’ll also stab you in the back.
“Boss, the kidnapper just shot a person on live camera, with this kind of development…”
Robert’s subordinate expressed his concerns; he had to consider the legal risks for Disney.
“No worries, it’s just a broadcast, accidents are too common, how could it be our fault.”
—————–
“I want to call Chan to see how he’s really doing, these kidnappers are too terrifying, I heard there was even a gunfight.”
The blonde babe, after all, couldn’t set her mind at ease about her friend, and under Temir’s amused gaze, she dialed Cheng Daqi’s number.
‘The number you dialed is switched off.’
Lisa double-checked the number but couldn’t find anything wrong with it—the number of digits was correct, and the contact name in the address book was ‘Chan’.
Temir’s gaze shifted away from her phone.
She rested her chin on one hand and began to contemplate.
‘The number you dialed is switched off.’
Seeking help with a hopeless gaze, the black-haired rich lady looked at Lisa with a tense expression.
She was starting to worry as well.
For the third time, Lisa prayed silently, hoping Cheng Daqi had just run out of battery.
‘The number you dialed is switched off…beep…beep…beep’
“Mi’er, could he really be in trouble?”
Seeing her best friend’s distress, Temir opened her mouth but said nothing.
She had intended to tease her friend as usual, mocking Lisa for being charmed by a wanderer.
But she found, helplessly, that she was worried too—worried about this strange new friend they’d made.
“I’ll ask around to see what’s really going on over there,” Temir decided after a few seconds of hesitation, wanting to use her connections to inquire.
“Look, it seems like the kidnapper is about to speak.”
Lisa pointed at the TV to alert her friend.
In the live broadcast, the convicted villain had been dragged away, and the Iron Man kidnapper stood up from his chair.
He bowed his head in a moment of silent prayer, and then he began to speak.
“Our goal is not money, but…”
“PEP IT, Dr Pepper, the king of American beverages from Texas.
I’m a pepper, he’s a pepper, she’s a pepper…”
“Fak!”
At that moment, countless American viewers, just like Lisa and her friend, cursed at ABC’s interrupting advertisement.
Since the founding of America, the American public had never been so united.
Everyone watching the broadcast cursed simultaneously, without prior agreement.
ABC had a quota for advertising airtime, but whether such interrupting advertisements served as positive or negative promotion for a brand was another matter altogether.
Klauer, too, had been closely watching the broadcast, and seeing the advertisement on the screen, his anxious heart finally settled.
At the very start of the live broadcast, he’d called a head person at ABC.
They had contacted each other once already when the female reporter arrived by helicopter.
They had agreed that if the kidnapper made demands, the television station had to play an advertisement.
Klauer needed to do everything in his power to control the impact of the kidnapping case, especially not letting the kidnapper hijack the public’s opinion to hold the police accountable.
He wanted Gru to be taken down, but he also wanted to protect the overall image of the LAPD.
Although he was no saint, having fed from the LAPD’s pot for so many years, he had his own principles.
The man in the Iron Man suit in front of the camera wasn’t aware that his live appeal had been blocked by an ad.
He continued to state his demands.
“…
We don’t want money.
Dracula Biotech must explain their crimes to the public, reveal their decades of experiments on American soldiers and the harvesting of organs from the bodies of American soldiers for organ transplants.
I give them twenty-four hours.
If they fail to do so…”
At this point, the Iron Man kidnapper lifted his mask.
Behind the mask was a calm-faced man in his forties, clean-shaven and composed.
The kidnapper’s voice was as firm as his expression, filled with a determination to not rest until his goals were met.
“Joel Dracula, I am already prepared for death; what about you?
If this doesn’t make you confess!
If this doesn’t bring you to justice!
I will kill your son first, to settle some scores on behalf of the soldiers you murdered and dishonored.
Then, I will come and kill you myself!”
