590: Chapter 99: The Beasts Standing in the Dark Actually Crave Light 590: Chapter 99: The Beasts Standing in the Dark Actually Crave Light CEO Cheng’s first night after Christmas was interrupted by an unexpected visitor.
Riel, who had been living with CEO Cheng for a long time—in separate rooms—was an LAPD officer who knocked on Cheng Daqi’s door at two in the morning.
“Chan, sorry, but someone is looking for you.”
Awakened by the burly Riel, CEO Cheng was not at all groggy; he understood that Riel must have had a reason to wake him up in the middle of the night.
Propping himself up with one hand, Cheng Daqi took a handgun from underneath his pillow with his other hand and asked calmly.
“Who is it?”
Riel turned on the light, and noticing the movement of Cheng Daqi’s hand, he also nervously subconsciously touched his waistband—his gun also was carried with him 24/7.
“An LAPD officer, he said he’s Jax’s subordinate and has urgent business with you, Jax is waiting at the old factory.”
CEO Cheng paused for a moment.
Jax?
Was there trouble on Gru’s side?
“Where is he?”
“He’s already left, Cort opened the door and then woke me up, what should we do?”
Only then did Cheng Daqi notice Scott standing behind Riel, the guy wearing pajamas, his face full of bewildered surprise.
He saw the gun in Cheng Daqi’s hands, still unaware of what had happened.
Cheng Daqi hesitated for a moment, quickly made a decision.
He was closely tied to Gru, and since Gru’s people had suddenly shown up today, something must have happened, and he could not ignore it.
If this crooked cop fell, many of Cheng Daqi’s plans might be ruined.
The old factory that Gru had given Cheng Daqi used to be a stronghold he operated for a long time; meeting there at midnight should be safe, even if something really did happen to Gru, such a meeting method shouldn’t pose a big problem—worst case scenario, he’d just kneel to Achilles.
“Let’s go, Cort, you go back to sleep.”
CEO Cheng quickly got up, not even planning to change his clothes; he wanted to meet Jax as soon as possible to clear up the situation.
“How about I go check it out first, Chan?
There’s obviously some emergency that has come up.
With the situation unclear, you can’t move.”
Riel’s thinking might be average, but having mingled with gangs for so many years, his strength was formidable.
Cheng Daqi shook his head.
“If meeting with his people becomes an issue for me, then it doesn’t really matter who goes, it’s all the same, no worries.”
Hearing the two men’s conversation, the golden-haired veteran realized that Cheng Daqi and Riel might be involved in something.
As Cheng Daqi’s friend, Scott couldn’t possibly stay silent at a time like this.
“Chan, let’s go together, give me a gun.”
All along, he knew that Riel and Danze’s identities weren’t so simple, but it wasn’t until he saw Cheng Daqi instinctively reach for a gun that night that he realized his friend was far from harmless as he seemed.
“No need, Cort, I can handle it.
You won’t be able to help if you’re unfamiliar with the situation and it might cause more trouble.”
“Come on, brother, I’m a soldier.
The only thing I do is follow orders and shoot.
Don’t treat me like some clueless sidekick from the movies.”
Riel nodded at CEO Cheng, among Cheng Daqi’s group of friends, his relationship with Kernor was the best, but he admired Scott the most.
Thinking of his plans to support Scott’s political career in the future, and how their fates were bound together, CEO Cheng finally nodded.
“Cort, don’t speak later on, wait for my cue before you act.
Riel, go get him a weapon.
We’ll take the Ford van over.”
That’s how the three of them, filled with trepidation, got into the car.
In the dark of night, Cheng Daqi, staring at the contact list on his phone, fell into deep thought.
If Gru had fallen, the plans he had with Mi’er would lose a crucial fulcrum.
The two of them were closely tied to Gru—CEO Cheng provided Gru with strategies to break impasses, and Mi’er vouched for Gru to earn an entry into Niu Sen’s domain; many other dealings later on were carried out in collaboration with Gru.
Some things appeared illegal but wouldn’t tip the scales.
The only issue was Achilles.
From the perspective of the interest chain, if Gru’s white and black gangs were taken down, among those associated with CEO Cheng, the only one who might take action would be Achilles.
But there was no need for him to do that, since after all, a fierce dog like Gru ultimately served them.
Cheng Daqi couldn’t figure it out.
He still needed to meet Jax first.
—————–
Gru’s former home, the old factory, had been transformed into a shooting and creation center by MAS, even setting up a professional studio exclusively for MAS.
Many things that had happened in the factory were erased with the renovation, but Gru still could enter the place.
However, Cheng Daqi was not surprised—he had never lived there.
Upon reaching the entrance, Cheng Daqi instructed Cort.
“Buddy, I need you to stay outside on lookout.
Turn off the car engine and then watch for any cars that might stop nearby and stay motionless.
Did I make myself clear?”
Scott was a bit nervous; he felt that Cheng Daqi and Riel might be dealing drugs, but the LAPD officer was the one who had knocked.
This puzzled him.
But he understood that even if Cheng Daqi really was involved in something, he had to help him—I owe Chan a chance to turn my life around, I can’t betray him.
So, without much conflict, he simply agreed.
“Chan, I’m a professional soldier.
I know surveillance and countersurveillance.
Go ahead inside.”
Cheng Daqi patted his shoulder, saying,
“It’s nothing serious, don’t worry too much.
If someone comes, just call me, I’ll hang up immediately, then you drive to any bar that’s still open for a drink, and if someone asks, you just say you wanted a drink in the middle of the night.”
“OK!”
Watching Riel and Cheng Daqi get out of the car, Scott picked up the equipment Riel had given him from under his feet—an AR15 with a high-capacity drum magazine, generously sponsored by the West Coast agent Eris.
