My Aloof Lord Ex-Husband Begs for Remarriage
Chapter 144 - 145: Searching for Medicine

Chapter 144: Chapter 145: Searching for Medicine

Chu Nanli walked briskly, unaware of the eyes following her from behind.

She now needed Zijin, a scarce medicinal herb that wasn’t available in ordinary apothecaries.

Chu Nanli went alone to Old Wen’s drugstore, arriving as the sky grew dark and the store was only tended by an attendant.

"Where’s Old Wen?" Chu Nanli asked.

"My master has gone out of town to look for herbs and won’t be back for a few days. If you’re here for a consultation, I can help just as well."

"Do you have Zijin in the store?"

The attendant shook his head in confusion, "Zijin? I’ve never even heard of it..."

"Never mind." Chu Nanli waved her hand and left, clutching her abdomen.

She had come here hoping for a stroke of luck but had prepared herself for the possibility that the store wouldn’t have the herb.

Xuanbao Pavilion had a collection of fine herbs; perhaps they had Zijin.

Her best course of action was to ask Zhuang Lin for help again.

Chu Nanli quickly turned and climbed onto the carriage, heading to Xuanbao Pavilion. Suffering from unbearable abdominal pain, she barely made it there.

By then, night had completely fallen, and Xuanbao Pavilion had closed its doors. Chu Nanli headed directly upstairs through the side entrance, knocking on the door of the private room.

The sound of laughter and chatter inside ceased abruptly at the knock.

"Who’s coming at this late hour?" Zhuang Lin wondered.

Ye Jiuxiao’s eyes flickered, and he set down his teacup, "Go see."

"Hmm."

Zhuang Lin rose from his chair and upon opening the door, he saw Chu Nanli’s pale face.

"Chu... Miss, what’s the matter?"

Zhuang Lin was a bit stunned.

Chu Nanli leaned on the doorframe with difficulty. Inside, she saw a group of people drinking and talking, and it seemed Ye Jiuxiao was among them.

"Excuse the interruption, may I have a word?" she managed to say through gritted teeth, sweat beading on her forehead from the pain.

Zhuang Lin was about to speak when he saw Ye Jiuxiao stand up, "Gentlemen, that’s enough for today."

The others were still in high spirits and somewhat confused, but they left as instructed.

Zhuang Lin immediately understood Ye Jiuxiao’s intention. Was he protecting her again?

Tsk.

Zhuang Lin put aside his thoughts and spoke up, "What is it you need, Princess Consort Chu?"

"Could you sell or lend me a stalk of Zijin? I will return it to you in the future."

Zhuang Lin appeared troubled, "It’s not that Zhuang doesn’t want to lend it, but Zijin is really rare, and I don’t have any here. However..."

"The one inside does have a stalk," Zhuang Lin said with a teasing glance at Ye Jiuxiao. "If you want to borrow it, perhaps you could ask him?"

Chu Nanli’s heart had chilled for a moment, but upon hearing that Ye Jiuxiao had Zijin, a sliver of hope rekindled.

"Prince, could you possibly..." Chu Nanli began, only to feel darkness close in around her.

Zhuang Lin panicked, unsure whether to hold her or not. Touch between men and women was forbidden, and this was the War King’s wife, no less!

As he hesitated, he saw a blur of motion before him. Ye Jiuxiao quickly stepped forward and caught Chu Nanli in his arms.

Zhuang Lin stared, dumbfounded.

"What are you waiting for? Get the carriage ready," Ye Jiuxiao commanded, holding Chu Nanli tightly.

Zhuang Lin nodded absentmindedly and immediately summoned the carriage.

Ye Jiuxiao carried Chu Nanli onto the carriage and rushed toward the Prince Residence.

Only after they’d left did Zhuang Lin realize what he’d witnessed. Did he just see something he shouldn’t have?

Ye Jiuxiao holding a woman?

He was known to avoid the company of women, even his servants were all male.

Now, he was quite proactive.

But that was beside the point.

The point was, that woman was also his nephew’s wife.

Tsk, it seems there will be some interesting developments to watch in the future.

After Ye Jiuxiao took off in the carriage, a black-clad guard emerged from a hidden spot, kneeling before Jiuxiao.

"Master, let me take the reins."

This was Lang Yi, Ye Jiuxiao’s Hidden Guard, who usually kept out of sight. Today, since Ye Jiuxiao was without guards, Lang Yi offered to drive upon seeing Ye Jiuxiao intending to take the reins.

"No need," said Ye Jiuxiao, and with that, he picked up the reins and left.

Lang Yi watched the carriage disappear in a cloud of dust, then realized that his master must have disapproved of his driving skills.
