Chapter 126 - 126 122 Your Brother Is Quite Something Huh
Chapter 126: Chapter 122: Your Brother Is Quite Something, Huh? Chapter 126: Chapter 122: Your Brother Is Quite Something, Huh? …
Sheng Xian, “Ayan, are you free tonight? Let’s have dinner together.”
Lu Jingyan, “I can’t, I have to work overtime tonight.”
This was the fifth day Sheng Xian had messaged Lu Jingyan asking her out, only to be rejected again.
Her replies to his messages were always fairly normal, without anything obviously wrong—either she had to dine with clients or she had made prior plans for a friend’s birthday.
But he always felt that her behavior, like that of a schoolchild, was a bit off, as if she were deliberately avoiding him.
He spent almost an hour going over the details of his interactions with Lu Jingyan in his mind, very seriously, and he couldn’t find anything inappropriate in his own actions.
On the contrary, he thought he had done quite well.
Even when she liked someone like Mu Chuci, he learned about it, and he really couldn’t figure out where he had gone wrong.
Looking at the message Lu Jingyan had sent back, Sheng Xian rubbed his forehead, sighing softly, then tapped a few more times on the keyboard.
Sheng Xian, “I happen to be free tonight, so how about I take you for some late-night food after you finish work?”
Recalling that Lu Jingyan seemed to really enjoy the noodles he cooked, he thought for a moment and typed another line.
Sheng Xian, “Or, how about I cook some noodles for you?”
Sheng Xian, “The noodles are fresh, I just bought them this noon.”
On the screen, the other party typed for a while before a message finally appeared in the dialogue box.
Lu Jingyan, “No thanks.”
Lu Jingyan, “I’m on a diet recently, no late-night snacks.”
Sheng Xian frowned, staring at the message that was rejected again for a while, before irritably slamming his phone down on the desk.
He really didn’t understand the convoluted little games women played.
The more he thought about it, the more agitated Sheng Xian became; he lifted his hand to loosen his tie and unbuttoned two buttons of his shirt, then picked up his phone and sent a voice message.
Sheng Xian, “Did I upset you in any way?”
This time, Lu Jingyan replied very quickly.
Lu Jingyan, “Not at all.”
Perhaps afraid he wouldn’t believe her, she also sent a super sweet and adorable smiley right afterwards.
“…”
Sheng Xian was a bit indecisive for a moment, scrolling through their recent chat history on his phone.
It looked normal if he called it normal, but he couldn’t pinpoint what was abnormal if it wasn’t.
Lu Jingyan, “I really have to work overtime tonight, (*╹▽╹*)”
Sheng Xian sighed softly, feeling like he might be overthinking things.
Sheng Xian, “Remember to have dinner.”
Lu Jingyan, “Okay.”
After ending the conversation, Sheng Xian waited a while, then sent Zhuang Chen a message, “Where are you guys meeting tonight?”
Zhuang Chen promptly replied, “You’re coming? Didn’t you say you weren’t coming? Why are you coming now?”
Sheng Xian furrowed his brow, “Are you going to give me the address?”
Zhuang Chen sent a location immediately, “Here you go, be there by 7:30, don’t be late haha.”
The place Zhuang Chen sent was somewhat far from the school and just happened to be during the evening rush hour, so all the roads were red. By the time Sheng Xian arrived, it was almost 8 o’clock.
Upon his arrival, Zhuang Chen immediately called the waiter to set up a set of tableware for him, “How come you’re so late?”
“Traffic,” Sheng Xian said as he hung his coat on the nearby rack, and pulled out a chair to sit down.
The room wasn’t just occupied by Zhuang Chen alone; two other longtime university classmates from Beijing were also there. They had been eating for a while and had consumed quite a bit of alcohol, but Sheng Xian, though appearing to be in a not so good mood, did not affect the group’s spirits.
He had driven there, so he didn’t let the waiter pour him any alcohol. The dishes on the table were almost finished, so he asked the waiter to add a few more.
After filling up, Sheng Xian put down his chopsticks, looked on quietly for a while as Zhuang Chen and the others drank and boasted, then habitually took out his phone.
Previously, whenever he took out his phone, he could always see her unread messages at the top of his WeChat.
Lately, she had become frighteningly reticent.
If he didn’t reach out to her, she barely contacted him.
Sheng Xian pressed his throbbing temples and entered the Moments section on WeChat.
He casually refreshed it, only to see Chen Kai’s posts dominating the feed, all of them videos.
He didn’t need to play the videos to realize Chen Kai was at a nightclub.
He glanced over and saw a video captioned: “The Nightclub Queen is back!”
He didn’t know why, but those words perplexed him, making him feel as if he had sensed something, his heart skipping a beat.
He opened the video, and the noisy sounds of the nightclub burst forth. He pressed the nearby button to lower the volume, then indeed saw her in the screen—the one who claimed she had to work overtime, refused to eat late-night snacks, and complained about needing to diet.
She wore a short skirt paired with high black boots, facing Song Xian with a happy smile as they danced.
The video was only ten seconds long and soon ended; Sheng Xian clicked on the remaining videos of Chen Kai.
Lu Jingyan, holding a wine glass smilingly clinked glasses with Song Xian, and then boldly downed the drink.
Lu Jingyan leaned back on the dimly lit bar counter, whistling at a passing boy in a black shirt with a mischievously raised eyebrow, “Hey, handsome, not bad.”
“……”
With an expressionless face, Sheng Xian replayed this segment several times, finally realizing why he felt that her chats with him had been off these past few days.
Brother.
The girl who used to always call him “brother” hadn’t called him that in five whole days.
After a brief silence, Sheng Xian turned off his phone screen, lifted his head calmly, and said to the other three who were partying wildly, “I’m leaving first.”
“Stay a bit longer, man. I didn’t drive, you can drop me off later, it’s on your way anyway.” Zhuang Chen grabbed Sheng Xian’s clothing without thinking.
Sheng Xian coldly shook off Zhuang Chen’s grip, stood up, and said, “Something came up.”
Zhuang Chen was at least seventy percent drunk but didn’t forget to be nosy, “What happened?”
Throwing on his thin coat, Sheng Xian glanced at Zhuang Chen’s eager face, scoffed, and threw out two words: “Catching fish.”
“What? Where’s fishing in the middle of the night? What fish?”
Ignoring him, Sheng Xian pulled open the door, closed it behind him, and left.
At the front desk, Sheng Xian paid the bill, took a parking ticket, and walked out of the restaurant.
Descending the stairs, he pulled out his phone to send Chen Kai a message: “Where are you?”
Chen Kai quickly replied with a location: “What’s up, bro? Are you coming over?”
Sheng Xian ignored Chen Kai, plugged the location into his GPS, and floored the accelerator.
Entering the bar, before Sheng Xian could even find Chen Kai to ask for his spot, he saw Lu Jingyan talking to someone at the bar.
Her skirt was very short, and the exposed part of her thighs between it and her boots was glaringly white.
Sheng Xian watched her for two seconds and then walked over.
Standing behind her, he hadn’t called out to her when he heard her laughingly say to the man beside her, “Sir, I don’t just add anyone on WeChat.”
The man flirting with her swallowed a sip of his drink, “Then tell me, what would it take for me to add you on WeChat? Buy you a drink?”
Before Lu Jingyan could reply, Sheng Xian abruptly pulled the person leaning on the bar behind him, scanned the man, and said in a cold tone, “Not interested in money.”
Lu Jingyan paused, looking up at the person in front of her.
She opened her mouth, and the instinctive “What are you doing here?” almost escaped her lips but got stuck in her throat.
She had clearly told him that she would be working late tonight.
Lu Jingyan’s first instinct was to run, but before she could move, Sheng Xian had already turned around.
Lu Jingyan had to suppress her initial instinct to flee, feeling a guilty conscience like getting caught by a teacher while misbehaving in school.
Sheng Xian lowered his gaze at her for two seconds, his expression neither good nor bad, “You seem to have a lot of ‘brothers’.”
