Chapter 124 - 124 120 Your Birthday
Chapter 124: Chapter 120 Your Birthday Chapter 124: Chapter 120 Your Birthday The cafe’s private room wasn’t very large, with one wall facing the entrance covered in lush greenery.
The curtains were drawn back, letting in half the sunlight, creating a tranquil environment that was half-lit, half-shadowed.
Bo Mu sat quietly in the darker area, looking down at his phone.
Sheng Xian saw Lu Jingyan standing at the entrance, not reacting for quite some time, and asked in a low voice, “Why aren’t you going in?”
Lu Jingyan came to his senses, his gaze shifting slowly from Bo Mu to Sheng Xian, half a beat too late.
This was far from the scenario he had imagined, and it took Lu Jingyan a moment to process it all.
On Valentine’s Day, why had he invited her out at the same time as Bo Mu?
Seeing the little girl looking up at him continuously, Sheng Xian thought she wasn’t prepared, so he leaned in closer to her and whispered reassuringly, “Don’t be nervous, I’m here.”
Lu Jingyan felt as though his brain was smothered, and it took him two seconds to sluggishly grasp what he meant.
She had told him about Bo Mu last night, past midnight, and today he had arranged a meeting so swiftly—should she criticize him for his efficient handling of the matter, or for actually taking her concerns seriously?
After seeing the young lady stubbornly staring at him, still unwilling to walk into the room, Sheng Xian raised his hand and gently patted her head, “Let’s go, it’s time to head inside.”
The young lady cared about her pride; she probably found apologizing embarrassing.
Before withdrawing his hand, Sheng Xian ruffled her hair again and said softly, “After we resolve this issue, I’ll take you out for something tasty.”
Lu Jingyan pursed her lips, somewhat uncertain whether the promised tasty meal from Sheng Xian was actually the main event of the day.
She uttered an ‘okay’ and mechanically stepped into the private room.
Sheng Xian followed her in and closed the door behind them.
Approaching the table, Sheng Xian pulled out a chair next to him for Lu Jingyan to sit.
Bo Mu put his phone down as they entered.
The room was very quiet; no one spoke a word.
Lu Jingyan sat stiffly like someone sleepwalking for a while, until she finally regained her composure.
Just as she had said, she would have to apologize to Bo Mu sooner or later. Now with Sheng Xian facilitating the meeting, it saved her the trouble of approaching Bo Mu herself and possibly facing rejection or ridicule.
All things considered, Sheng Xian really had helped her.
The waiter delivered the coffee Sheng Xian had ordered for her, and after drinking half the cup, Lu Jingyan cleared her throat, looked at Bo Mu, and said simply and bluntly, “I’m sorry.”
“About the last incident, I got it wrong, sorry.”
Lu Jingyan had expected Bo Mu to mock her, and although she was mentally prepared, she would have still found it embarrassing.
But, to her surprise, today Bo Mu was uncharacteristically amiable, “It’s okay, let bygones be bygones.”
Bo Mu didn’t seem intent on staying long: “If there’s nothing else, I’ll be on my way. I’ve been running around for shows these past few days and I’m pretty tired. I also have an event tonight, so I won’t stay long.”
Sheng Xian escorted Bo Mu to the door of the private room.
Upon closing the door, he turned to see Lu Jingyan listlessly playing with her phone at the table.
Walking to the table, he looked down at her nearly untouched coffee, “Are you still drinking this?”
“Huh?” Lu Jingyan raised her head, glanced at Sheng Xian, caught on, and said sullenly while picking up her coffee, “Yes.”
Sheng Xian remained silent, sitting down beside her once more.
When Lu Jingyan’s coffee was nearly finished, Sheng Xian finally pressed the call button on the table to summon the waiter for the check.
After signing the bill, Sheng Xian looked at Lu Jingyan, his tone neutral, “What do you want to eat tonight?”
Lu Jingyan opened her mouth, “Anything is fine with me.”
“Then let’s go,” said Sheng Xian, picking up his coat and casually taking Lu Jingyan’s bag as well.
The dinner venue chosen by Sheng Xian was nearby the cafe; it was about a three-minute walk.
It was just past five o’clock, not yet busy, and the two of them chose a quiet and secluded spot to sit.
The dishes were ordered by Sheng Xian. After the waiter left, Lu Jingyan was preoccupied and didn’t feel like talking. Sheng Xian, someone who isn’t talkative by nature, rendered the dining table silent for a time.
Since there were few of them, the dishes were served quickly. Perhaps because Lu Jingyan was so quiet, Sheng Xian served her several times.
Finally, when she was nearly full, Lu Jingyan couldn’t help but look up at Sheng Xian.
When Sheng Xian met her gaze, he placed the shrimp he had just peeled into her small dish, “Still not happy?”
Lu Jingyan opened her mouth but didn’t know how to tell him that her unhappiness wasn’t because of Bo Mu.
Seeing that she didn’t speak, Sheng Xian added, “That matter is already in the past, she has forgiven you. Don’t think about it anymore.”
Lu Jingyan uttered an “mm” and bent her head down to nibble on the shrimp.
A while later, she put the remaining half a shrimp back on her dish and looked up at Sheng Xian, “Today… Did you ask me out just for this matter?”
Sheng Xian looked up at her and considerately poured her some steaming rice milk, “Yes, she’s going to be quite busy later on, so today was the only time she had.”
Most importantly, he didn’t really want her to go find Bo Mu. Although he didn’t know exactly what happened between the two girls, he always felt that if she went to Bo Mu, she would definitely not be able to hold her head up high in front of her.
In his mind, she was a princess-like figure, and a princess should act like one, maintaining a dignified aloofness.
Lu Jingyan: “…”
She could faintly hear the sound of her dreams shattering.
She felt like a balloon that had just been filled with air, not yet sealed, and someone accidentally let go of it, causing it to deflate instantly.
Sheng Xian asked, “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” Lu Jingyan shook her head, lowered her head, and continued nibbling on the shrimp: “Just asking.”
After finishing the remaining half a shrimp, Lu Jingyan no longer had any appetite. She put down her chopsticks and, without disturbing Sheng Xian’s eating, bowed her head and played with her phone.
To say she was playing would be inaccurate; she was aimlessly flipping through her phone with a distracted mind. When she got to her messages, she saw an unread message in the trash.
About an hour earlier, Bo Mu had sent a message: “It was Sheng Xian who came to find me. I won’t have time for the next two months. I’m entering the film crew tomorrow, and I could only spare two hours this afternoon. Sheng Xian made room in my schedule, and he told me not to make it difficult for you. If you want to thank someone, thank him. I’m not holding a grudge against you purely for his sake, and I don’t know why he cares so much about you. He didn’t want to wait two months for you to apologize, afraid you’d dwell on it.”
So Bo Mu won’t be in Beijing for the coming period, and that’s why he hurried to make it today.
To say she wasn’t moved would be a lie, but Lu Jingyan truly couldn’t find joy in it.
He had held her hand the entire night, was there really no significance to it?
Although holding hands wasn’t as dramatic as kissing or sleeping together, because it was him, it really mattered to her.
She felt like she was floating in the air, her feet stepping on nothing but clouds, unable to find any sense of stability.
She didn’t like this feeling, drifting up and down, anxious with uncertainty, like playing a guessing game, unable to decipher what was truly in his heart.
When she chatted with Song Xian in the early hours, she was very certain, but because she had been too certain before, now she became unsure.
She even started to doubt whether her steadfast belief that Sheng Xian had a secret crush on her was perhaps her own wishful thinking.
Lu Jingyan played with her phone quietly for a good while, head bowed, when suddenly she was struck by an impulse.
She thought for two seconds, then found Song Xian’s WeChat and said to her, “Call me.”
A minute later, Song Xian’s call came in. Lu Jingyan put on an act as she answered. She had barely spoken a few words before she pressed and held the power button on the side.
The phone screen went dark.
She pressed it a couple of times, then lifted her head and looked at Sheng Xian, “Song Xian has an emergency and needs to speak with me, and my phone has run out of battery. Could I use yours briefly?”
To make it look convincing, she added, “Send a WeChat to Chen Kai and ask him to send you Song Xian’s phone number. I don’t remember it.”
Sheng Xian held his phone in one hand to unlock it and passed it to her, “You do it.”
“Thank you,” Lu Jingyan took his phone, found Chen Kai’s name, pretended to type while swiftly navigating to Sheng Xian’s phone settings.
Upon arriving at the personal hotspot, she saw the password at a glance: nishengri.
