Chapter 92: 092 Brother-in-law, I wish you stay together forever, joy without worries (2 more updates)
After William Hale entered the kitchen, Zoe Bell also went in to help. Lucas Bell was somewhat psychologically troubled, especially when he was in an unfamiliar environment, he tended to get anxious. He instinctively wanted to take medication to alleviate it.
"I heard you’re 19 too," Wyatt Hale said, tilting his head to look at him.
"Hmm."
"Then we are the same age. What month were you born?"
"October."
"I was born in May, making me older than you, you can call me ’bro’."
"..."
Lucas Bell did not want to.
But Wyatt Hale was a chatterbox, especially lately at his brother’s place, without any peers around, it was almost suffocating for him.
Lucas Bell, however, became more and more anxious until he heard him say, "Don’t believe what my brother says. He’s just a big bad wolf, very wicked."
"You also think he’s bad?" Lucas Bell turned to look at him.
Eye contact was made,
confirming they were kindred spirits.
"Let me tell you, my brother just pretends to be good but actually has lots of wicked ideas. I lived with him during my high school years, it was literally the nightmare of my life."
"Only my sister-in-law can tolerate him, yet she still says he’s a good man, which is really baffling."
Zoe Bell knew that Lucas Bell did not particularly like interacting with strangers and was worried that Wyatt Hale’s enthusiasm might make him uncomfortable. So, she purposely went to the living room to check.
By then, Wyatt Hale had already thrown his arm around his neck, treating him like a brother.
Lucas Bell looked somewhat uncomfortable, yet he did not reject him.
"Lucas, if you have time, come over to Capital City, I’ve got your back," Wyatt Hale thumped his chest.
Lucas Bell chuckled, "What abilities do you have to cover for me?"
"I might not be capable, but my brother is awesome, and then there’s my dad, two uncles, my cousin..." He was a typical case of the weak pulling rank by citing more powerful relatives, and he was especially proud and complacent about it.
"They are all so excellent, don’t you feel pressured? Has anyone said that you are less successful than they are—that you’re a failure?"
"In today’s society, being a failure doesn’t matter; being alive is already good enough."
"..." It was the first time Lucas Bell had heard such a notion.
"If life isn’t a bit of a mess, you lose half your happiness."
"Don’t you have any plans for your future?"
From a young age, Lucas Bell had been instilled with the idea that he had to work hard and strive, and that unsuccessful people were failures.
Wyatt Hale continued to play video games, "We take it one step at a time, and if it really doesn’t work out, die halfway through."
Lucas Bell was stunned.
He found that Wyatt Hale had a shameless vigor about him.
Quite admirable.
Talking to him was very engaging and enjoyable.
——
About half an hour later, when it was time to eat, that short time had made Lucas Bell realize clearly why his sister had the courage to break off entirely from their family.
It was because William Hale and his family had given her enough courage.
Before the Bell family encountered problems, everyone thought their family was full of filial piety, with children to be proud of, and envied them greatly.
In reality, under the splendid robes were lice crawling everywhere.
"Lucas, I’m telling you, you really made it worth your while coming over today. My brother seldom cooks himself; you’re in for a treat," Wyatt Hale pulled him to the table.
Lucas Bell obviously wasn’t used to being so close to someone, but Wyatt Hale had thick skin and didn’t care much about it.
"Want a drink?" Wyatt Hale asked him.
"I’d like some alcohol," Lucas Bell spoke up, to some surprise from Zoe Bell, who always subconsciously saw him as a child.
Realizing he was now an adult, she didn’t say much more.
But Wyatt Hale wasn’t having it; seeing him drinking alcohol, he also picked up a glass but glanced at his elder brother, William Hale, who was in a good mood today and didn’t say anything.
The mischievous lad was delighted, thinking, if not now, then when?
And Zoe Bell also relaxed for once, pouring some alcohol into her glass as well.
Lucas Bell stood up to toast William Hale three times.
The first glass,
"Mr. Hale, thank you for your hospitality today."
The second glass,
"Thank you for looking after my sister during this time."
The third glass,
"I wish you and my sister a happy marriage, to stay together for a hundred years and grow old together."
Lucas Bell was well aware of his place, that he and Zoe Bell could never happen; it was better to graciously offer his blessings and not put his sister in an awkward position.
Zoe Bell, however, was stunned for a moment—who told him she was married?
She didn’t suspect William Hale.
It was definitely that loudmouth Wyatt.
William Hale drank all three glasses, his expression unchanged as he looked at him, "I accept your blessings."
After Lucas Bell sat down, Wyatt Hale leaned over to whisper in his ear, "No wonder he invited you to dinner. You must know that my brother and sister-in-law just picked up their marriage certificate today—it’s a special celebration."
"What did you say?" Lucas Bell was stunned, "They just got the certificate today?"
"Didn’t you know?"
"I..."
Lucas Bell saw the marriage certificate, but he didn’t look inside; how could he know the exact date it was registered?
"It was all thanks to you for bringing your sister-in-law’s Passport Card." Wyatt Hale’s words were casual, yet they deeply wounded Lucas.
Lucas glanced at William Hale.
His instincts had been right:
The man was nothing but a scoundrel!
At that moment, he also understood why his sister had been deceived by him.
Such clever manipulation, one move after another.
Lucas knew well that some relationships couldn’t be forced. Considering the effort William Hale had put into wooing his sister, he likely would take good care of her. The Hale family seemed decent and living with them would surely be happier than staying with her own family.
An inexplicable sadness overwhelmed him; looking up at Zoe, he managed a relaxed smile.
"Sis, this drink is for you. May you and Mr. Hale be together forever, happy for a lifetime. May all your days be joyful." After speaking, he raised his glass and downed it in one go.
"You should drink less," Zoe reminded him.
"I’m not a child; I know my limits."
The drink burned his throat, torturing him with its sourness.
When he had returned to the country, he knew it was time to end this affair.
But now, at this moment, it felt as if a thousand-pound stone weighed on his chest. His eyes felt dry, his head slightly bowed, his expression half-hidden, his hand white-knuckled around the glass.
William Hale observed in silence.
When it comes to feelings, hesitation is the worst.
He had specifically invited Lucas over today to boast and assert dominance, but more than that, he wanted to make him understand not to waste time on someone impossible.
Lucas had drunk a lot tonight, and Zoe, staying with him, had also had quite a few.
They had intended to have him stay overnight, but he refused.
William said he would drive him home, with Zac Cruz driving, while Zoe walked him to the door.
"It’s chilly this autumn, Sis. You better go inside," said Lucas, his face flushed from drinking, yet his mind clear.
"I’ll watch you go."
Lucas’ head hung low, his smile bitter, "Sis, can I ask for something?"
"Sure."
"Could you..." his voice choked up, "like when we were kids, pat my head?"
Zoe just smiled, looked at him bending down, and gently rubbed the top of his head.
The light outside was dim, and Lucas buried his head even lower, biting down hard to hold back a salty, metallic taste in his mouth. When he looked up, their eyes met, and he was smiling.
His smile was terribly ugly.
As Lucas got into the car, William Hale sat beside him. As they drove off, Zoe’s figure gradually faded from his view. Then he finally spoke softly, "Mr. Hale..."
"Hmm?"
"Actually, you didn’t need to go out of your way to send me."
"I felt like you had something you wanted to say to me alone."
Lucas gritted his teeth, he really did understand everything. "I don’t like you."
William chuckled softly, "It shows."
"I’m envious of you, and I wish you both the best."
The two said nothing else all the way until they were almost at the Bell family’s doorstep. Then Lucas spoke again, "Brother-in-law, can I ask you something?"
A pleased "Brother-in-law" from Lucas, William responded, "Go ahead."
"Could you really help introduce me to that artist you mentioned who organizes exhibits?"
"..."
Zac Cruz almost laughed out loud.
After dropping Lucas home, on the way back to Larkhill, he opened his phone which had photos of the marriage certificate and an electronic copy of their marriage photo, which he scrolled through repeatedly.
He couldn’t help but smile slightly.
Zac was astonished:
Go ahead, laugh, you’re almost grinning ear to ear.
But when William got home, he couldn’t smile anymore. When he had left, Zoe had only drunk a little, but now she was completely drunk, being cajoled by her younger brother.
Wyatt Hale, looking dejected, said, "Sis, you don’t know, because you and my brother registered your marriage today, I lost a huge sum of money!"
"Why?" Zoe was genuinely drunk.
"Because I failed to complete the task set by the organization."
"What organization?"
With a hiccup from Wyatt, "It’s from when you first got together with my brother. Behind his back, our family created a group..."
William just quietly listened and watched.
Then he picked up Wyatt’s phone left on the table and casually asked, "Wyatt, what’s your phone password?"
"585888."
Zac could hardly believe it; in this state, if Young Master Wyatt was out drinking and got too drunk, it wouldn’t be just his phone he’d lose!
Then William saw messages from "Sharp Knife," his brother, openly exposing him in the group.
Great!
As Wyatt drank, his body felt stiflingly hot, but suddenly a chill swept up from behind, "Sis, do you feel a bit cold?"
