Chapter 400: 399 Good Play (5) Reputation Ruined, Public Execution
Zoe Payne glanced at her brother.
She knew only that he had sent a small box, but not what was inside.
This bracelet looks pretty nice.
Brother is really generous!
Tim Payne gave his personal assistant a meaningful look.
Assistant Law, who had been watching the drama unfold, immediately rushed up, forcibly removed the bracelet from Marigold Jones’ wrist, and snapped, "This is a bracelet personally designed by Junior President Payne, and you think you’re worthy!"
He snatched away the bracelet and stepped down from the stage.
Marigold Jones’ face might as well have been stamped into the ground.
Cressida Jones was stunned for a few seconds.
This bracelet was actually a gift from Junior President Payne?
She had thought...
She and he were not close; she could not accept such an expensive gift.
However, everyone’s attention was focused on the thieving Marigold Jones, and hardly anyone paid particular attention to the value of the bracelet. They only thought that this second Miss Jones was truly despicable.
Video coercion,
Bragging in a nightgown,
Fighting over jewelry,
...
She truly committed every conceivable misdeed, utterly disgusting.
"Cressida, about today, it’s Beckett who has wronged you," said Mrs. Jeans, unable to make any excuses, giving signals to her son to apologize.
But Marigold Jones’ ear had been torn and she was whimpering in distress; Beckett’s soul seemed to be ensnared by her, ignoring his mother, he blurted out, "Mom, I really don’t like Cressida Jones, I like Marigold. Please just let us be together!"
"Scoundrel, what nonsense are you spouting!" Mrs. Jeans slapped him across the face.
Today, the Jeans Family had lost all face.
Marigold Jones was a lowly woman unfit for public display,
Mrs. Jeans wished she could rip that little hussy to shreds, so how could she possibly accept their being together?
"Mom, please..."
With things as they were, Beckett Jeans made no attempt to hide his feelings.
Cressida Jones’ expression was one of pain, "Beckett, since this is the case, I’ll grant your wish."
As she spoke, she picked up the engagement contract they had just signed, and in a few swift movements shredded it, "The engagement party today is cancelled. I wish you and your sister everlasting love!"
Wyatt Hale chuckled lowly, "A bitch matched with a dog, indeed a match made in heaven."
Everyone suddenly burst into laughter.
"Cressida..." Mrs. Jeans was both panicked and furious, "As for today’s incident, I will definitely give you an explanation. Our Jeans Family only recognizes you as our daughter-in-law. You like Beckett so much, aren’t you willing to give him up?"
Tim Payne cleared his throat and took a sip of tea.
Like?
Given Mrs. Jeans’ appearance, this little Miss with a heart like sesame rice ball filling seemed to have acted quite well usually.
"I do like him, but he doesn’t like me. I thought that feelings could be cultivated. My dad also said that once we’re married, he would restrain himself..."
"I didn’t expect it to be just my wishful thinking."
"One is the man I love most, the other my closest sibling. Don’t try to persuade me. I am willing to let them be together. Marigold is quite nice. She probably did all these things today because she likes Beckett too much. I hope Auntie won’t blame her."
Cressida Jones’ words infuriated Mrs. Jeans so much that her heart erupted with anger.
Had it been another place, she would have torn that little wench’s face apart.
"As it happens, it’s an engagement either way, just with a different leading lady," Cressida Jones said with a forced smile.
With that, Mrs. Jeans had nothing to say.
She just held Cressida’s hand, "You’ve suffered, you’re a good kid."
"I’m not suffering, as long as Beckett is happy, I don’t mind what happens to me."
Those unaware of the truth all sympathized with her.
"You really are a good kid..."
Mrs. Jeans was already not fond of Marigold Jones, and seeing how sensible Cressida Jones seemed, she grew even more irritated.
She wished she could kill that little hussy!
While Marigold Jones, holding her ear, kept explaining to her parents and Beckett Jeans that she was not the one who released the video.
"I’m not an idiot, why would I release such a video of myself? This..." Marigold Jones’ gaze shifted, landing on Cressida Jones, "It must have been her, it was my sister’s doing!"
"I did it? I’m so in love with Beckett Jeans, eagerly looking forward to marrying him, why would I ruin my own engagement party!" Cressida Jones retorted.
"Because you want to frame me!"
"Frame you?" Cressida Jones snickered derisively, "And your reason is?"
"You’re jealous of me!"
"Jealous of you being the other woman?"
"I’m not!"
"That’s right, in your moral understanding, only the one who isn’t loved is the mistress. So I’ll back out, I’ll let you have each other, and you won’t have to sneak around and hide in bathrooms anymore."
Whispers of mockery arose from the many guests.
Marigold Jones covered her ears, feeling both ashamed and annoyed, yet helpless.
Her mind was in complete disarray, with everything happening so suddenly, and now she was thrust into the limelight.
She couldn’t possibly announce in public that she had been constantly provoking Cressida Jones and that all of this was her revenge.
For the last shred of dignity, the Jeans Family could only proceed with the engagement party with gritted teeth.
Only the lead female role changed to Marigold Jones.
Disheveled, with no blessings,
Below the stage, all sorts of mocking voices were heard.
The faces of both the Jeans and Jones families were full of embarrassment and discomfort, yet they could only force smiles.
Even Marigold Jones’s ears were still bleeding.
What kind of engagement party was this?
Everyone just treated her and Beckett Jeans as a joke.
It was practically a public execution.
As for Cressida Jones, she left the stage with grace under the sympathetic and regretful gazes of the crowd.
"Poor thing, is Beckett Jeans brain-damaged? How could Marigold Jones compare to Miss Jones? Her mother was a mistress; she could have been more yielding. As for scheming to steal someone’s partner, her methods are truly despicable."
"But it’s for the best this way. If Miss Jones really married into the Jeans Family, her life would be ruined."
"Young Master Jeans will regret it sooner or later."
...
After the ceremony, the Jeans and Jones families wanted to talk to the Payne siblings, especially since the recent events had offended them and Wyatt Hale, but they couldn’t find them.
They heard that under the accompaniment of Cressida Jones, they had gone to the back rest room.
"It seems that the Payne siblings care quite a bit about Cressida," Mrs. Jeans muttered, "Last time we went to the Hale Family, Mrs. Hale was very nice to her."
She glanced sideways at her son who was still comforting Marigold Jones, furious:
Idiot!
If Cressida Jones truly made an impression with Zoe Payne, forming a good relationship could have been advantageous.
After today’s fiasco, it’s certain that Cressida will never marry into their family.
How could she have birthed such a fool!
After such an incident, they still treat Marigold Jones like a treasure.
Zoe Payne was trying to see if she could remove the stain from her clothes because they were dirty.
But as she tried to clean it, the stain only spread further.
It was simply unbearable to look at.
The place that was wiped was soaked with water, making it inevitable to feel uncomfortable when worn.
"Mrs. Hale, I’ll get you a new set of clothes," Cressida Jones offered, wanting to thank her for her righteous help.
"Then I’ll trouble you," Zoe Payne did not refuse.
"This is my outfit, I haven’t worn it. I hope you don’t mind." This was what she had prepared to wear after the engagement party ended.
"Thank you, but I have already asked someone to bring clothes."
Tim Payne had already called Assistant Law to prepare clothes, but it would take time.
Zoe Payne went to a compartment to change, leaving only Cressida Jones, Tim Payne, and Wyatt Hale in the room.
Someone who loved gossiping was chatting with Michale Shaw about tonight’s event, thinking typing was too slow, he simply picked up his phone to make a call outside.
Cressida sat there, but she always felt like she couldn’t breathe properly.
Everyone thought the video tonight was deliberately released by Marigold Jones in an attempt to climb the social ladder.
But the angle of the video...
As long as Tim Payne wasn’t an idiot, he would definitely guess it was her doing.
In the entire room,
He might be the only one in the know.
What should she do?
Talk to him about it? Ask for his help in keeping it a secret?
But what right did she have to request Junior President Payne’s help?
Such a headache!
She originally thought that only Zoe Payne would attend the engagement party, hoping that with her presence, the Jeans Family and her father wouldn’t dare to force silence.
Tim Payne and that chain were beyond her expectations...
Thinking that he knew the truth all along, watching her act, Cressida Jones felt unbearably guilty.
What can she do to completely shut his mouth?
