Chapter 211: 211 Hair, to test DNA (2 more updates)
"Sir?" The nurse frowned, what was going on?
"I’m sorry." Junior President Payne was about to bend down to pick up the documents when he caught sight of a figure approaching out of the corner of his eye, and as he looked up, he saw William Hale coming.
He bent down, picked up all of Zoe Bell’s documents, and casually picked up the Red String as well.
Looking at the man in front of him, "Junior President Payne?"
His face was very pale, and he looked extremely unwell.
"Sorry, my tenosynovitis acted up, and I couldn’t hold onto the bag for a moment." Junior President Payne barely squeezed out a faint smile from the corner of his mouth, but his gaze remained fixed on the Red String in William Hale’s hand.
William Hale nodded, showing understanding.
Zoe Bell had mentioned to him that she had once met Junior President Payne by chance at the Rehabilitation Hospital.
His hand did indeed have an old injury.
William Hale handed the documents to the nurse and then eyed him, "You don’t look very good."
This Junior President Payne who could be seen as a rival by William’s uncle was certainly not an ordinary person; although they hadn’t interacted much, he always gave off an air of elegance, calm to the point of even being a bit cold.
Yet now his hand was actually trembling.
"I’m fine!"
He forced himself to remain calm, his eyes falling on the Red String in William’s hand, and asked as if casually, "Whose Red String is this?"
"This?"
William Hale shrugged slightly, "Naturally, it’s Zoe’s."
"Hers?"
"It’s a bit complicated to explain..." William Hale knew that Junior President Payne was an ally rather than an enemy, and besides, the orphanage director matter wasn’t a secret, so he briefly chatted with him, "After Director Hall was arrested, his daughter-in-law came, took the Red String, and said it was what Zoe wore on her wrist at the time."
"That person lies compulsively, whether this is true or false, I don’t know."
But Zoe Bell still took custody of the Red String.
"May I have a look? It seems quite a unique style," said Junior President Payne, his face pale.
"Of course."
William Hale handed the Red String to him, then continued to help Zoe Bell with the hospital admission, his mind was also in turmoil.
It was all about the surgical risks the doctors had mentioned.
When he signed the informed consent for the surgical risks, his heart was in knots.
All his thoughts were on Zoe Bell, and he had no energy or attention to spare for Junior President Payne.
He naturally didn’t notice the unusual look in his eyes as he examined the Red String.
"Mr. Hale, you mean... this string was originally worn on Miss Bell’s wrist?" he confirmed again.
"I’m not certain, it’s just what the director said."
Zoe Bell didn’t trust her, that’s why she had never considered searching for her relatives for so long.
"Is that so..."
Junior President Payne stared at the Red String for a long while before he resumed his usual composure and handed the Red String back to William Hale, "The string is intricately woven."
William Hale nodded politely.
He, however, hadn’t noticed anything special about it.
If one were to consider it now, with the variety of braiding styles available, it certainly wouldn’t be considered special, but he had forgotten—if this was indeed what Zoe Bell wore on her wrist as a child, it would be a braiding style from over twenty years ago.
For that era, it was already a very intricate design.
"Junior President Payne, it’s quite late, shall I have someone take you back?" William Hale, having taken care of Zoe Bell’s admission, asked.
"No need, I’ve brought an assistant."
"Then..."
William’s implication was:
You should be leaving now, shouldn’t you?
They weren’t that close, and it was indeed very late.
"My hand hurts, I’m planning to get an IV for inflammation before I leave."
"..."
As a result, he ended up staying in Zoe Bell’s hospital room.
This was a VIP room, spacious indeed, so his presence didn’t make it feel crowded, but having this "outsider" around, William and Zoe talked with a certain restraint.
However, William Hale had learned from his uncle that Junior President Payne once had a sister.
It seemed he had transferred his longing for his sister onto his own wife.
His mother had passed away early; it was quite understandable to sympathize with him.
So, he didn’t say much more.
Assistant Law was completely baffled.
If he wanted an IV drip or to rest, they could go home, or to another ward or rest room. Why insist on sticking around Miss Bell?
After Zoe Bell’s IV infusion was finished, she went to the restroom accompanied by William Hale.
Hannah Johnson was outside, taking a call.
Assistant Law then saw Junior President Payne actually get up with his IV bottle, walk to the bed and bend down searching for something.
"Jun..."
Junior President Payne motioned for him to be quiet.
Then he took a strand of hair from the pillow Zoe had used and stuffed it into his pocket.
Assistant Law: "..."
What is this?
He suddenly remembered how Junior President Payne had purposely taken away the teacup used by Zoe last time in the tea room, and he instantly realized what his boss intended to do.
Saliva, hair, both can be used for DNA testing.
Having followed Junior President Payne for seven or eight years, he faintly suspected that he might have lost a brother or sister, as the lady’s mental state was very poor. But the specifics were tightly concealed by the Payne Family.
Could it be...
His pupils dilated suddenly, his mouth agape, he was stunned into silence.
But Zoe Bell and William Hale were back shortly, and the man who had been receiving an IV drip had already removed the needle himself, casually pressing a cotton swab to the bleeding spot, "It’s quite late, I won’t bother you any further."
"Junior President Payne, your IV drip hasn’t finished..." Zoe frowned.
"My hand doesn’t hurt anymore."
"..."
Zoe was astonished; not hurting, so he decided he didn’t want to continue the IV drip—what caprice.
No wonder his tenosynovitis never seemed to get better.
Just now he had been the one insisting on staying, and now he was anxious to leave; Zoe was astounded, this Junior President Payne really was difficult to deal with.
After getting into the car, without waiting for Assistant Law to speak, he took the blood-stained cotton ball from the back of his hand, took the hair from his pocket, sealed them separately, and handed them to the assistant.
"Get someone to test and compare these immediately; I need to know the results as soon as possible."
Seeing his serious expression, the assistant nodded earnestly, "Junior President Payne, do you suspect that Miss Bell is blood-related to you?"
"This..."
"It couldn’t be, could it? In this world, such coincidences are rare, even though she is an orphan, but..."
"She was kidnapped, not necessarily an orphan." Junior President Payne corrected him.
After Director Hall was arrested, the orphan story was debunked.
"That still doesn’t necessarily relate to our family." Assistant Law was worried that Junior President Payne’s greater hopes could lead to greater disappointment, after all, the world was so vast, and chances like this so rare.
Could it be, the saying was true:
’Those who are destined to meet, despite the twists and turns, will eventually encounter each other’?
"You talk too much!"
With his expression exceptionally serious, Assistant Law refrained from saying more.
After a while, he spoke again, "She’s having surgery tomorrow, it should be done by noon. Prepare the plane for me; I’m going to Greenland. I want to see Director Hall in person."
Assistant Law nodded earnestly.
It seemed,
he truly was concerned.
The man turned to look out the window, his eyes filled with a desolate chill, but his heart was unusually surging with tension. When his sister went missing years ago, the police concluded she was deceased, but since they could not find her body and only found some blood and clothing.
Having not seen her body, he just couldn’t believe that his sister was really dead.
Maybe...
Providence was kind, and had truly brought her back to his side.
