Mrs Hale, I Surrender -
Chapter 181 Little Wyatt: Unfilial son, get in here!
Chapter 181: 181 Little Wyatt: Unfilial son, get in here!
The sky was misty; a sliver of a moon hung white.
Stars were sparse, scattered across the expansive, frigid night breeze from the mountains that chilled to the bone. William Hale called Zac Cruz, asking him and Kyle Lowe to take care of Liam Hugh, who must have been scared to madness by his younger uncle.
After all, he had lost control of himself, pleading that his mind was unwell and that he needed to recuperate in a mental hospital.
When Zac Cruz arrived, he saw two cars collided, their bodies dented, which also gave him a fright.
William Hale then made a call to his cousin.
"How is grandma?"
The one who was most heartbroken was her.
"Not very well."
"Has she got home yet?"
"No, she insisted on going to the temple."
By this time, they had already reached the temple. The mountain gates were closed for the night, and it was only because the Old Lady had donated a considerable amount of money for incense oil over time that she was allowed in. She knelt on the meditation cushion, worshiping the Buddha, and when her head touched the ground, Hannah Johnson saw her grandmother’s shoulders shaking...
She must have been crying.
Yumi Johnson gestured for her daughter to follow her outside, giving her some time to herself.
The Old Lady had an unyielding personality. Had someone else been the cause of her youngest daughter’s death, given her character, she would have made them pay the price, even at the expense of her old life, but it turned out to be her own son.
She was utterly disappointed in Liam Hugh, but after all, he was the son she had raised.
Only a mother could understand the kind of anguish and helplessness she must be feeling.
——
After William Hale had finished the call with his cousin, he turned to see his uncle standing not far away.
A touch of red at the fingertips; the lit cigarette brightened the night.
"When did you come back to Beijing?" William Hale walked over to him.
"In the afternoon."
"Why didn’t you go home?"
"I went to see my sister-in-law."
He had spent the entire afternoon in the Cemetery. Saying so, he offered William Hale a cigarette. His emotions were a mess lately; despite trying to quit smoking, he couldn’t help himself, feeling unbearably stifled.
"Congratulations."
William Hale paused a moment.
"Congratulations on your marriage."
"Thank you."
"Time flies so fast. Over the years, a bunch of people have tried to set you up, and you didn’t take interest in any of them. I thought you might end up alone. Seeing that you have found someone you like, as your uncle, I’m very relieved."
"..."
"You’re an oddball, I was genuinely worried about you."
They might be uncle and nephew, but their relationship was almost like that of brothers.
William Hale was speechless.
Anyone could say those words, but what right do you have to say that about me?
And after Brock Hale had finished calling home, he saw his brother smoking with his son.
He massaged his temples, which were throbbing.
He got into the car first, leaning back against the seat, his mind drifting to the first time he met Eva Hugh.
They were introduced through an acquaintance for an arranged marriage.
Brock Hale was reluctant to participate so his brother Quade Hale went to the blind date in his stead. When he returned, he only said, "Brother, I think she’s very nice, so I scheduled the next date for you."
Brock Hale was dumbfounded.
He was unwilling to start with because he had heard that this Miss Hugh was extremely pampered and fragile from a past kidnapping incident during her youth.
But with his brother agreeing on his behalf, he had no choice but to show up at the cinema as promised.
And then...
Eva Hugh didn’t come.
She sent a message through a friend: "It’s best not to force feelings. I wish you find the right person soon."
At that moment, Brock Hale found her rather intriguing.
Latter on, his parents tried to match her with his brother by inviting her to their home. That day, she wore a plain dress and held a bouquet of Glory Lily, its fiery and vivid hues.
With just one glance, she captured his heart.
When he told his parents he wanted to get to know her better, his father scolded him, berating him, "What took you so long!"
But he still needed to ask Eva Hugh what she thought.
Surprisingly, he received a positive response.
It wasn’t until they were married that he learned that Eva Hugh had set her heart on him from the very beginning, even the matchmaking; it was arranged by her parents at her request.
They had promised to be together from dawn to dusk.
In the end, he was left alone.
He still remembers the last words she said to him, "I feel like I’ve been walking for so long, so long, I’m so tired, meeting you was really nice..."
"William has always been a bit cold in temperament since he was young and has his own ideas about things. When he grows up, for major decisions like work, job seeking, getting married, and having children, you mustn’t pressure him."
"These are not the fixed processes of life; if he doesn’t want to, we can also skip this part."
Eva Hugh suffered from depression and was often sentimental.
At that time, Brock Hale thought she was just suddenly moved by her emotions.
It was only later in reflection,
that he realized it might have been her way of settling her affairs.
Often, when depression strikes, it is not as people think, with hysterical outbursts or constant crying; those suffering may appear even more normal than the average person. They laugh during conversations, and what they show to others is always "I’m fine".
They fear troubling others the most, and feel a deep sense of guilt...
So Liam Hugh’s words were the last straw that broke her.
"Dad," William Hale got into the car, interrupting his father’s thoughts. The car interior was very dark, but he clearly saw his father’s eyes were red.
"Are you two done smoking?"
"..."
"Smoke less, it’s bad for your health," Brock Hale switched back to his cultured and gentle demeanor.
"Brother," the youngest uncle of the Hale Family sat next to him.
Brock Hale nodded.
Then someone took a tissue and handed it to his elder brother.
"What do you mean?" Brock Hale frowned.
"To wipe your tears."
William Hale: "..."
He wouldn’t meddle in the matters between his father and uncle.
With a cold snort, Brock Hale said, "You better think about how you will explain this to father when we get back. He was quite unhappy that you didn’t come home for the Mid-Autumn Festival, he called you an ungrateful son."
"Father’s getting on in years and becoming more and more nagging."
"He’s doing it for your good."
"Yet he doesn’t even have a clear idea about his own little patch of a vegetable garden."
"..."
——
As they neared home, William Hale’s phone vibrated with a call from Zoe Bell, asking where he was.
As the car drove into the old house, Brock Hale and William Hale got out and saw that Lily Lott and Zoe Bell were already waiting outside.
"Why are you outside?" William Hale frowned. The weather was getting cooler these days, with lots of changes, and he was concerned about her leg.
"It was stuffy inside after a while, just nice to come out for some air," someone replied.
When that person got out of the car,
he saw his brother welcomed by his sister-in-law, his nephew by his nephew’s wife,
and himself,
alone and unaccompanied.
Although no one had introduced him, Zoe Bell instantly guessed who the person before her was.
Dressed in formal attire, holding a suit in one hand and carrying a bag in the other, shutting the car door casually, his every move was nonchalantly elegant and extravagantly graceful, exuding an air of detachment.
The moonlight fell upon his cold, pale face, appearing refined and as pure as snow.
Zoe Bell pursed her lips,
but no one had told her that the youngest uncle of the Hale Family was so handsome.
William Hale wrapped his arm around her waist, pinched the soft flesh around her midsection, and looked at her with a smile:
Zoe,
keep your eyes in check, show some restraint.
She politely said, "Hello, uncle."
He nodded slightly, then greeted Lily Lott, politely calling out, "Sister-in-law."
But he heard Wyatt Hale shout from afar, "Ungrateful son, roll back here right now!"
The atmosphere,
froze in an instant.
