Chapter 120: 120 Is Uncle William Hale’s family, the only ones poisoned?
Zoe Bell washed her hands and stood in front of the mirror to tidy herself up. After sending a text to her younger brother, Lucas Bell, to let him know she was safe, she was ready to go for dinner.
But as soon as she opened the door, she nearly bumped into someone.
The man was very tall, probably about six foot two.
Dressed in a simple black T-shirt and black pants, with short cropped hair, he had slightly dark skin, a high nose bridge, and deep, sharp eyes. Holding a phone in one hand and with the other in his pocket, he glanced at Zoe, a flicker of surprise in his gaze.
It was clear that he worked out regularly, as the muscle lines on his arms were quite distinct, suggesting a wild and defiant character.
Looking down at her, he gave off a sense of pressure from above.
"Logan, in a bit..." At this moment, another person walked out from the side.
He looked about twenty-six or twenty-seven, dressed in a white shirt, with dark short hair that somehow looked exceptionally soft. There was a smile on his lips, and his eyes were relaxed, emanating a gentle aura.
"Sister-in-law?" He was the first to speak.
"Hello," said Zoe politely.
"Simon Hale," the man introduced himself and then introduced the tall man in the black clothes, "My younger brother, Logan Hale."
The man said, "Sister-in-law," in a voice that sounded quite reluctant.
His voice was low and rough.
Especially his gaze; Zoe always felt it wasn’t very friendly.
These must be the two sons of William Hale’s uncle.
Their appearances and temperaments were as different as night and day, not at all resembling brothers, but their names were connected.
Yet William Hale and Wyatt Hale didn’t look like brothers either.
But Zoe clearly sensed that this cousin named Logan seemed to harbor some hostility toward her.
His gaze made her scalp tense.
So when she arrived at the dining room, she immediately clung closely to William Hale.
"What’s wrong?" William Hale noticed her tension.
"Nothing, I just didn’t expect your cousin to be so tall," Zoe said with a forced smile.
"He used to be an athlete."
"No wonder."
"Sister-in-law," Wyatt joined in, "you should be careful around him."
"Why?"
"He’s my brother’s diehard, brain-dead fan."
"..."
"You know, diehard fans only lower their guard for the real sister-in-law," Wyatt clicked his tongue, "Before I was born, he was the youngest in the family, and I heard my brother took special care of him."
"If my brother didn’t get married, he would be more than happy to live with him for the rest of his life. I stayed with my brother for a while in high school, do you know what he asked me in private?"
Zoe was curious, "What did he ask?"
"He asked me if the bed at my brother’s place was soft!" Wyatt said incredulously, "He even told me to cherish having such a brother."
"Don’t be fooled by his hulking appearance; he raises a pet hamster."
"The hamster’s name is Sweetbean."
"Can you believe that? He came up with that name himself."
Tough guy vs. hamster?
And named Sweetbean?
After Wyatt’s explanation, Zoe thought he wasn’t as intimidating, but when she looked at Logan again, his gaze was still piercing.
At that moment, William Hale spoke up: "Logan."
"Big brother," his tone was surprisingly obedient.
"How have you been recently?"
"Pretty good, just haven’t seen big brother for a long time."
"Come over to my place someday, and we’ll have a good talk."
Upon hearing this, Logan smiled instantly.
Old Sir Hale seemed a bit unhappy, "What? You’re not living in the old house?"
"We’re thinking of staying at Yarden, it’s more convenient," William Hale explained.
"Staying at my place isn’t convenient for you?" Old Sir Hale huffed.
"Dad, the young couple just got married, naturally they want some private space," came a gentle and pleasant voice.
Zoe looked up to see a fashionable and attractive lady walking out, "If William and his wife will be living in Capital City from now on, just ask them to come back whenever you miss them."
"Will I miss them? Hmph—" Old Sir Hale was stubborn.
Zoe quickly got up to greet this must-be aunt as she reasoned.
"Sit down, we’re all family here, no need to be so formal," Mindy Xander told her to sit back down quickly, approaching her husband Quade Hale, who naturally got up to pull out a chair for her.
It was clear to see that they were a loving couple.
Zoe Bell saw the two of them and knew immediately which parent the brothers resembled.
The older brother looked more like their mother, while the younger brother was the spitting image of their father.
"You’re so pretty, no wonder William is hiding you away. Could it be that he’s afraid someone might steal you away?" Mindy Xander said with a smile as she sized up Zoe Bell, "The last time you went to the old house, you didn’t let us come, probably because you were afraid my second son would scare her."
"Mom." Logan Hale frowned.
"Don’t worry, this kid just looks a bit rough."
"..."
Logan Hale kept a cold face and said nothing.
"Stop chatting and let’s eat," Old Lady Hale said, and then everyone started using their chopsticks.
Everyone raised their glasses and drank a little wine.
Zoe Bell, with her leg injury, couldn’t drink alcohol, so she only had juice. Although everyone paid special attention to her, they didn’t focus all their attention on her, and most of the time they just made small talk.
William Hale would help her with her food.
She just bowed her head to eat, listening quietly.
The atmosphere was warm, and every now and then Wyatt would crack a joke, making everyone burst into laughter.
Through the conversation, Zoe Bell learned that the younger cousins from her second uncle’s family, Simon Hale was pursuing his doctorate, and after retiring from the military, Logan Hale had started a security company. Besides taking on regular security assignments, they also provided security services for celebrities and stars.
Zoe Bell couldn’t help thinking to herself:
Then he must know quite a few celebrities.
"Have some crab." William passed a prepared crab to Zoe Bell.
"Thank you."
Just as Zoe had a taste, she noticed a sharp gaze fixed on her from across the table.
Without thinking, she knew that someone’s defenses were down.
Simon nudged his brother, "Eat your food properly."
"Big brother has never peeled a crab for me."
"Even without a sister-in-law, he wouldn’t peel a crab for you."
"..."
That was the truth, but it still hurt.
"Bro, why do you think big brother married her?"
"Because he likes her," came the reply.
The brothers whispered to each other, keeping their voices down.
"With big brother’s personality, he wouldn’t go to such lengths if he wasn’t truly in love."
"What does he like about her? Her beauty?"
Simon Hale laughed lowly, "If you performed a ballet for big brother, he might also like you."
Ballet?
Him dancing?
Could that image even be bearable?
Big brother might prefer to gouge his eyes out.
"Isn’t it said that their marriage might be fake? It doesn’t seem like it though," Logan Hale said thoughtfully as he scrutinized, "I really can’t see what’s so special about her."
"It’s correct that you can’t see it. As long as big brother likes her and thinks she’s special, that’s all that matters."
"I think big brother is the most special, the best."
"Still, he’s not going to marry you."
Logan Hale was speechless. What kind of nonsense was his own brother saying? His feelings for big brother were of admiration,
At that moment, Brock Hale couldn’t help but sigh, "It would be great if the third one were here, then our family would truly be united."
Quade Hale said, "The third one’s job, just receiving a design draft, can keep him busy day and night. He probably doesn’t have time to come back."
"He doesn’t have time? The last time William came back for the Passport Card, he immediately rushed back!" Old Sir Hale snorted coldly, "Alright, it’s such a wonderful day, why bring up that unlucky topic? It’s a buzzkill."
The old man just had a tough mouth.
Probably, no one in the family wanted to see the youngest son as much as he did.
Zoe Bell stood up to give a toast to the elder Hales separately.
She glanced at Old Sir Hale, feeling uneasy but mustering her courage, she still called out, "Grandpa, I wish you a Happy Mid-Autumn Festival."
The old man’s eyes were sharp, and Zoe Bell indeed felt a little scared.
Grandpa?
Old Sir Hale narrowed his eyes and simply said, "I appreciate it, sit down."
His expression gave away neither pleasure nor irritation.
Zoe Bell drew closer to William Hale and whispered, "Was it too abrupt for me to call him grandpa directly? It seems like he isn’t too pleased."
"Not at all."
William Hale glanced at his own grandfather:
He might just be so happy that he could fly.
