William Hale just chuckled and stepped back, adding, "I think Lucas is quite good, even though the Bell Family isn’t great, he himself is good."
Zoe Bell wished she could find a hole to crawl into!
That damn kid, Lucas, what had he learned all these years abroad?
Having received no reply for a long time, he directly made a phone call. When Zoe Bell answered, she suppressed her voice, "Hello?"
"Are you in the hospital?"
"Yeah."
"Which hospital are you at? Should I come to see you? Should I bring some food?"
"No need, it’s quite late, and it’s raining outside."
"No worries, I was just about to head out to a friend’s place."
Seeing her on the phone, William Hale left the room, and Zoe Bell finally breathed a sigh of relief, "Lucas Bell, send me fewer voice messages from now on and be more careful with what you say."
"What did I say?"
"You..."
"What? Did your brother-in-law hear it?" Lucas chuckled, "Sis, I’m serious. From a man’s perspective, just say you like him, and your brother-in-law will surely spoil you even more. Who knows, I might become an uncle soon."
"You’re thinking too much."
"Rest assured, your brother-in-law definitely thinks about it more than I do."
The two casually chatted. After hanging up the phone, Lucas grabbed a few clothes and headed out, only to be stopped by his father in the living room.
"Lucas, your sister might end up in jail, and our family might go bankrupt..." Kevin Bell’s face was marked by time.
The Bell Family was already struggling, and to appease the Fletcher Family, they had scraped together over a million in cash to send them all away.
Lucas Bell’s face was expressionless, "So, what about it?"
"Tell me honestly, what exactly is the relationship between Zoe Bell and William Hale? You’re close to them, you should know."
Lucas Bell’s mouth curled in derision, "Whatever their relationship is, it’s none of your business."
After saying so, he walked towards the door.
"Does William Hale genuinely like her? I really need her help, otherwise, the Bell Family is finished," Kevin Bell chased after him.
"Can you go find her, please? She likes you, just speak up, and she will surely agree to ask William Hale."
Seeing his son not turning back.
Kevin Bell roared in a low voice, "Lucas Bell, do you want to see your mom and me die?"
Yet, Lucas Bell, without turning back, held his umbrella, disappearing into the rain.
His silhouette was resolute.
"Kevin, maybe we should just let it go. Aren’t you tired of struggling for so long? Maybe... this is fate," Vivi Lange, stabbed in the back by her own daughter and recuperating in the hospital, had begun to see things more clearly.
Even if bankrupt, they still had some assets; they couldn’t live as lavishly as before, but enjoying their later years wouldn’t be a problem.
But Kevin Bell refused to accept his fate.
Thinking of no longer being influential, having to live an ordinary life, begging for money at his age, he couldn’t accept it.
There was still a way to save the company, he couldn’t possibly resign himself to fate.
**
Zoe Bell had thought she would be sleepless that night but perhaps due to the exhaustion from recent dance practice, after the IV, she lay in bed, listening to the pelting rain against the glass, her mind in turmoil.
William Hale, unapproachable as an icy, silent mountain under the desolate moonlight, was an existence beyond her reach.
She had not dared to ask before, fearing to misunderstand and become a laughingstock.
Now that he had professed liking her, she had become timid...
It felt unreal.
As her thoughts scrambled, she somehow drifted into a deep sleep.
Earlier, William Hale had stepped out to borrow a conference room from the medical staff for an overseas meeting, finishing only at two in the morning.
On his phone, a message from his cousin.
"William Hale bends for love, suspected of falling for an adopted daughter." This was a message sent by an entertainment public account from Capital City.
"Just to clarify, she’s already severed ties with the Bell Family. Now, she’s just herself."
"So, have you made the relationships clear? How did the young girl react?"
"It’s two in the morning."
"If it weren’t for work, who would want to stay up this late."
"Staying up late can lead to wrinkles."
The person on the other end blew up, she had just turned 30 this year, an age when she particularly cared about wrinkles. Hearing this, she felt a bit irritated, "William Hale, you look like a decent man, why did you have to have such a mouth?"
"You should rest early, I’m off to accompany my wife."
"At this hour, she must be asleep. Why would she need your company?"
"It’s late at night, I’ll accompany her to sleep."
"..."
That tone was truly shameless.
William Hale hadn’t been resting well lately, but lying beside Zoe Bell was the only time he felt at peace.
The one who falls in love first always suffers from gains and losses.
The sound of the rain continued until late into the night. After the thick clouds dispersed and the full moon was clear, moonlight streamed into the room, spreading over the bed, casting a faint, enchanting light on them both, full of intimacy.
Zoe Bell woke up the next day to find William Hale not around due to work, but Nanny Parker was there. She had cooked porridge for Zoe, brought her clean clothes, and helped her with washing up.
After the doctor’s rounds, she still had two IV bottles to go through in the morning.
Around ten, someone knocked on the door.
"You are..." Nanny Parker eyed the newcomer, because she did not recognize her.
"Zoe?"
Upon hearing the voice, Zoe Bell turned and found Director Hall standing there, carrying a fruit basket and a box of mooncakes, smiling as she entered, "I heard you were hospitalized, so I came to visit."
"Mommy Hall, please have a seat," Zoe Bell, her hand tethered to an IV drip, moved with difficulty.
Nanny Parker poured her a cup of water.
"Don’t be so formal," Director Hall declined, "Zoe, who is this..."
"This is Nanny Parker, here to take care of me."
"Thank you for your hard work."
"It’s nothing really. I need to step out to buy some things, so I’ll trouble you to keep her company," Nanny Parker said, cautiously not addressing her as "Madam" in front of a stranger, as she left the hospital room to give them some privacy.
Director Hall looked around the VIP hospital room, naturally furnished with everything—fridge, TV, sofa—far better than ordinary rooms.
"Not busy at the hospital? How did you find the time to come here?" Zoe Bell asked casually.
"It’s all right, Mid-Autumn Festival is coming up, and I went out to buy some food and drinks for a children’s party. We’re organizing a Mid-Autumn Festival gala," Director Hall looked at her warmly but added jovially, "I wanted to invite you to dance, but seeing your condition, I guess that’s not possible."
"Definitely not."
"Will you be discharged by the Mid-Autumn Festival? Can you come to the hospital event? The kids would be thrilled to see you."
Zoe Bell just smiled lightly, "Hard to say, look at my foot, it’s quite swollen."
"Being in the hospital during a festival, who would be with you?" Director Hall sipped her water, her question seeming casual.
However, Zoe Bell always felt:
She was beating around the bush, seemingly probing about her whereabouts for the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Mid-Autumn is an important family gathering festival. If William Hale were to take her back to Capital City, it would indicate their relationship stood at a different level, and this was also implicitly inquiring about their relationship.
Was Director Hall interested in this as well?
Considering her conversation in the orphanage, Zoe Bell just laughed and said, "Lucas is here, he will accompany me."
"Right, I almost forgot, you and your brother have always been close," Director Hall then changed the subject, congratulating her on her award and reminding her to take care of her health.
As they were talking, accompanied by a knock on the door, William Hale walked in.
His gaze was intense; the instant their eyes met, Director Hall felt a shiver run down her spine. His sharp, piercing eyes were like those of a hawk or a wolf, as if he could see right through her...
"One look and see through!"
