Chapter 66: Slithering Snake
Chapter 66: Slithering Snake
Mrs Hua Valentine turned her sharp gaze into a glare, directing it straight to Li ZiChen as she realized what this snake of a man had planned all this time. He had came knocking to her house, claiming he had found her daughter and promising to bring her back home. He even promised he will help them in crushing her mother. He declared that he would like to be in a good term with the family and he wouldn’t mean anything harmful as all he wanted to do was to reach an agreement with the Hua Family where they would both lend their help.
But now Mrs Hua realized that this man had done this all because he is infatuated by AiLin.
While it should be a good thing, Mrs Hua Valentine wasn’t keen on Li ZiChen. His family background is good, wealth wise he is rich, and he should be a good man to her daughter, but there was always something off with the young man when he pulled his smile or look at others. The way he gazed at people isn’t as if he was gazing at a human. Instead, it was as if he was gazing at a pawn in a chessboard, a toy for him to play and destroy when he sees them reaching their potential.
AiLin felt like she should drag Li ZiChen to the corner of the room and hit the man by his stomach for bringing her into a situation that she didn’t expect. He continued, "I do wish that we can continue talking about our love life, in fact I’d be more than glad to tell you all everything as we even begin to live together."
"Oh goodness," Mr Hua pressed the back of his palm to his forehead, his back giving out as he laid his head on his wife’s shoulder.
Mrs Hua was also shaken, clear by her expression as she seemed to be scared to death and was thinking on ways to deal with Li ZiChen the snake that had laid his claws on her daughter.
Vicky wasn’t sure but she didn’t see Li ZiChen as a man that would be a terrible choice for her sister so she relented but Samuel was looking unhappier the longer he heard Li ZiChen’s voice.
"But aren’t we here to discuss more important things?" Li ZiChen reminded while tapping at the table. He took a sip of his tea and made himself at home, more comfortable than the rest of the family members as if it was his own nest, "AiLin, you have questions you wanted to ask them don’t you?"
Brought back to touch the reality, AiLin had been trying to comfort herself in the family. But Li ZiChen reminded her of the questions that she had, those that were urgently needed to be addressed for the future.
She glanced at Mrs Hua who seemed to turn back to her frigid expression while Mr Hua seemed tenser than ever.
"I do," AiLin started as she carefully looked at their expression to study their faces. After a while in prison, she became even better in studying expressions and differentiating the lies and truths. Simply because they treat her well wasn’t enough to make her to see through whether they could remain as a family in the future. After all people change, perhaps they won’t be her ally even if they care for her as her family.
"Where should we start," said Mr Hua as he had held his wife’s hands. Mrs Hua’s face was as still as the water without ripple, her expression was calm. "Your grandmother," said Mr Hua who had taken the role of the story teller, "Your grandmother has always thought that a having a son is a blessing. To her, a son is more needed than a daughter and she has always had those old mindset deep in her head. It had caused her to become more critical, especially to the daughters that she gave birth to."
"But she wasn’t only critical," Samuel chided from the side, continuing his father, "She was hateful. She despised all the daughters of her family. Perhaps the only one she likes is her daughter in laws who could give her a baby boy. While those who gave birth to a daughter she wouldn’t hesitate to let them know her despise of the baby. She would even..."
The family went silent but AiLin could fit the words without them continuing it. They meant to say that if it was found out that the baby is a daughter, her grandmother wouldn’t hesitate to make them abort the said baby.
"Has she always been like this?" She questioned to her hear mother who spoke this time, answering her,
"Always," Mrs Hua responded, "But she was never so hell bent on killing her bloodline even if it was a female until my younger brother died. He was the first son of the family, your grandmother’s favorite. She spoiled him rotten but once he died, she became more hateful."
At this, AiLin noticed that Vicky appeared more unwell than before. As she looked to Vicky, the girl showed her a smaller smile and spoke with a tone that she tried to subdue,
"The daughter of the first son of the family, is me," explained Vicky for AiLin to finally put everything together. Although they are sister, they are also cousins.
"Even to the daughter of her own beloved son, her heart remain as cold and unfeeling. That’s the type of woman she is," Mrs Hua spoke, her tone was free from anger or hatred, it seemed as if she was speaking about someone else’s problem and not her own, as if she had made peace with it but AiLin wonder how far true that was as she was still here, agreeing to let Li ZiChen get revenge on her own mother.
Though she doubted her grandmother was someone good.
"I’d rather that you never meet her," Mrs Hua said before looking to her eyes, "She is someone who knows your weakness and use it against you. Her words, they hurt more than a blade twisted to your heart."
"For now, she’s in the hospital," said Samuel to add the information. "But unfortunately she isn’t dead yet."
The family then drank the tea all at the same time, their expression deadpan as they all agree to wish for their grandmother, mother, and mother in law, to leave the world as soon as possible for they can’t bear to see her alive. AiLin can be certain that her grandmother is someone to be feared for. After all, these four people was so kind and gentle when they talked to her, caring about her so much that they didn’t even want to let her fall to the ground, but talking about her grandmother made something shift on their heart and their expression turned more merciless than ever.
Mrs Hua who then placed her empty teacup looked at AiLin’s side profile. Her husband’s hand tightened around her palms, telling her to go for it but before she could speak a maid suddenly rushed toward them. The maid’s expression was filled with worry as she spoke, "Madam, Master, more guests are here— she rushed inside the house before we could stop them—"
"—Who are you to stop me?" A woman’s voice enveloped the room. She walked in with her chin tipped upward, her eyes condescending the maid who had tried to stop her from entering the house and stared at her with a frown, "Do you know that if I want to, I can make sure that no other house will ever hire you as a maid ever again? Know who you are talking to, you stupid imbecile."
