Chapter 37: Barefooted Bridge
Chapter 37: Barefooted Bridge
AiLin snapped her eyes wide.
Under the moon was a face of a man who was expressing such a grave concern. He seemed as if he had just been stabbed, staring at her, demanding for her answer, and seemingly as if he was the one who was going to die.
She turned to look around her, finding herself standing at the bridge filled with cars that were passing through. Not far from where she had stood, there was a black car that belonged to Li ZiChen. It took her another second to see that his face belonged to Li ZiChen himself.
"What are you doing here?" AiLin’s voice was as clear as a droplet of water as she looked at him, "You seemed.. so shocked."
Li ZiChen frowned at the sudden change in her expression. She truly seemed to question his horror as if not knowing that he was frightened to death seeing how her face was filled with such a despair when she stood beside the bridge. Her gaze was staring at the bottom of the bridge as if she was measuring its distance!
Now— she’s asking why he is here and why he looked so scared?
"Who did you meet?" Li ZiChen was almost relentless as he asked her the question.
AiLin frowned, "Are we really going to ask questions after questions?" She pursed her lips, not wanting to reply to his question as he didn’t want to reply to her own. She turned her face, "I was just taking a walk. It’s nothing. As far as you should know, I am actually in quite a good mood."
"Good mood?" Li ZiChen narrowed his eyes as he knew that isn’t true. "I expect you to be a good liar but you don’t seem to be one."
"I don’t know what you are imagining or implying Mister Li but I am in a good mood. I have to warn you that I hate nosy people who want to know my feeling or feel as if they knew my feelings better than me. Let go of my shoulders," AiLin shrugged but she realized that this firm hold was tightening like an iron clad that didn’t want to leave at all. "Li ZiChen!"
In return, the man in front of him was squeezing his eyebrows as if he was frustrated to death.
He released her shoulders after a moment of internal battle in his mind. He then breathed in and knelt down to the ground, startling her.
Seeing the top of his head under her made her to panic for a moment. She wondered what he was going to do when he suddenly pulled a handkerchief from his pocket and reached it out to her ankle. AiLin flinched as she felt the cold sensation on her feet as Li ZiChen’s fingers wrapped entirely over her legs and placed the handkerchief underneath her feet.
She looked at him in surprised but not only because he had bent down on his knees to clean her feet but also the fact that her feet was without shoes. She remembered taking it off in the taxi and then walked over the bridge but did she left it there?
Li ZiChen frowned upon seeing the cuts that had formed on the soles of her feet. His mind was filled with dark clouds before he took his breaths in and lifted his face to look into her eyes, "How far have you been walking for?"
His tone was soft. So soft and tender and filled with gentleness. How could she not feel her heart wavering?
Now she felt embarrassed for having brushed him off earlier. She pressed her forehead as she knew she couldn’t lie. She had been agitated and she had been restless. Usually she wouldn’t be so bothersome such as this but perhaps because it was the first time she had faced the Jiang Family members without it being planned, she might have been suddenly triggered.
The sky was also too blue this morning and perhaps that was the trigger as it reminded her of that loss she felt from her stomach as her baby was abor—
"How far?" Li ZiChen asked again. His voice cut coldly in her head as if he could peek to her head and realized that she had harbored another dark ponder.
She shook her head and instead said, "I’m fine, you can let go and stop kneeling. Your clothes are expensive and so is your body. How can I let the prestigious Boss Li to kneel right in front of me and touch my dirty feet?"
She chuckled but fell into silence and Li ZiChen wasn’t showing a similar smile.
"This clothes can be bought again, my hands can be washed, and I am nothing but a normal human before I am known as the Boss of Li Corporation," Li ZiChen refused to let go of her feet. It was hard to think that such a man who carries an empire on his shoulders find it necessary to kneel to someone like her. Instead he held to her feet tightly. "Tell me how far have you been walking for. Please?"
AiLin couldn’t help but feel her heart tickling. She stared at him and wanted to brush him off again but she wasn’t so rude or cold hearted when the man had even pleaded to her. She was also too stubborn today. Although she wasn’t usually like this, Li ZiChen managed to always deter her with his unexpected appearance. With her voice slightly shaken she looked behind her, "From the start of the bridge?"
"That’s an eight minutes ride. You have walked more than fifteen minutes without shoes," reminded Li ZiChen and he sighed briefly. "Where did you leave them?"
"I don’t know," but now that he asked her questions, she couldn’t help but bent her knees to his level and ask him a question in response, "How could you know where I am?"
"Check your phone," Li ZiChen replied and when she pulled her phone she found that there was over thirty four missing call from Li ZiChen himself. He seemed to have called her and noticed she was off the radar. Was he scared she was going to back away from their plan? Was that why he looked so shocked earlier when he saw her in the bridge? Maybe because he thought she was someone who would break her promise?
Though she could tell that look of shock he showed wasn’t only due to fear she would suddenly break off her promise... it was something else that her heart didn’t want to recognize.
Cars passed by, people were curiously looking at the car that had suddenly stopped and the two that were sitting in front of each other but none dared to stop or take a picture as the bodyguards of Li ZiChen had gathered around the place, blocking them for good. Even though the place was filled with noise, they seemed to be entranced by each other’s presence. One with worries, the other with queries.
"What brought you here?" Li ZiChen then asked her as they both now knelt in front of each other, almost as if they were sitting beside the bridge.
