Chapter 255: Choosing To Believe
Chapter 255: Choosing To Believe
Su HaiTan had gone completely quiet. Eerily quiet even. He seemed to have taken her words with complete shock, something she couldn’t blame him for as she noticed that he was really not aware of the accident that seemed orchestrated by someone. He didn’t take this news well as she saw him staggering to the table, holding to the documents as if confirming everything. It seems after reading it again he realized how everything seems oddly convenient.
The witness was conveniently there. It happened in the dead of night in a road with barely one soul alive to see what had happened. The cameras that recorded everything yet none seemed to prove that his parents were really alive as they drove the car. The fact that they were last seen alive was three hours ago until they had entered the car without a clear proof that they were still alive when they had entered the car again.
Then there was the drunk truck driver. The abusive husband whose death would be welcomed with open hands while turning his parent’s tragedy into a natural tragic tale.
Su HaiTan was by no means dumb. Having graduated in such a young age from a prestigious university in Europe, he could easily discern logically things that were out of place even if deep down his heart refuses to acknowledge it.
"Young master?" Canary waved her hands as he had stood still in an odd position and a blank expression for more than twenty minutes.
Just as she was about to snap him from his thoughts by shaking his shoulders a sudden click from the door startled her. She quickly try to hide but found herself exposed from the large door behind her. It would be far... far too late.
But she couldn’t get caught now! Not now!! If she was found out and brought to custody, these people would punish her severely knowing what she had done and how long she had served in prison.
As her heartbeat raced and she was about to run, strong arms captured her and pushed her entire body behind him.
Detective An who had stepped in with a coffee inside a paper cup sighed, "It must have been lonely alone here, Young master. Apologies for my tardiness-"
When he looked upward, he had found Su HaiTan who was smiling. The young master had raised his hands, stopping Detective An from getting closer. "I have some things I would like to ask you to get for me, Detective An if you don’t mind?"
Detective An, ready to please him smile and nodded, "Whatever it is, young master!"
"Can you get me a couple of sandwiches?" Su HaiTan pulled his wallet and placed the heavy black car on his fingers, "Thank you very much for your kindness, you can go ahead and buy a thing or two for yourself."
"Then I can get my subordinate-"
"I trust you more," Su HaiTan carefully eyed him. His smile didn’t reach his eyes but it was trained to look welcoming and warm despite his pressuring air.
Though surprised and slightly annoyed for being told to leave and fetch the sandwiches alone, Detective An looked at the black credit card and thought since he was allowed he could get a fancy lunch which wouldn’t matter anything to the young master’s wallet at all.
"Alrighty! Leave it to me, young master." In a hurry Detective An turned away. He looked at Su HaiTan once more before he left and wondered in his head why his shadows seemed too elongated though the detective didn’t pay too much attention in it before continuing his steps and closing the door behind him.
Su HaiTan then stepped away while Canary sighed in relief.
"I’ve spent too much time here but thanks for helping," she didn’t forget his kindness. His broad back and long legs had covered her so easily which somewhat peeved her. She quickly thought to bring the documents to her car-
"I’ll drive you out of this building."
"What? No," she refused but Su HaiTan had picked her box and then pushed all his documents inside. He seemed rattled and she could tell that he wasn’t completely reigning himself yet. Still tattered from the bruises the truth had left him.
"It would be easier, besides, I have more questions for you. I promise to help you with whatever you need," his eyes then fell on her box of documents, "Because from what I see you seem to be fighting to find the truth too, just like me."
Canary wasn’t quite fond of being too involved on someone’s problem, she had taught herself that her own problem was far too much that she couldn’t and shouldn’t pay attention to someone else’s problem next. Yet when she was about to refuse, she could feel Su HaiTan’s hands that held her shake slightly.
He looked younger than her and was still fighting for the truth...
She sighed, cursing her kindness. She should refuse but Su HaiTan, unlike her, seemed to still be clouded with too much mysteries that he couldn’t find anyway to survive from the forged lies given to him.
Without a choice she nodded quietly and Su HaiTan seemed to smile very faintly, weakly.
Taking her documents and his own, they both left the building while Su HaiTan hid her body with his figure as they passed by the hallway. Canary then led him to a place that could easily help them avoid the cameras and being recorded until they arrived to his car and without a second thought, Su HaiTan sped up his racing car, passing through the empty roads until they both reached to Canary’s office.
Her bodyguards who saw the foreign car immediately stood up. The twins with their large torso had menacingly stood in front of this expensive car, knowing well that this was a car no one could afford easily and if they could afford it, they wouldn’t have stopped to their loanshark office to what? Borrow money when his car could be sold and pay off generational debt easily?
Su HaiTan barely spared them a glance as he killed the engine, his fingers still gripping the steering wheel tightly. The lingering tremor in his hands betrayed the storm within, but his face remained unreadable.
Canary, on the other hand, let out a sigh. She knew the twins were just doing their job, but right now, she didn’t have the patience for their theatrics.
"Move," she said, stepping out of the car.
The twins exchanged looks, their sharp eyes flickering between her and the young man who had just driven her here.
"Who’s the rich kid, boss?" one of them, Yun, asked, crossing his arms over his broad chest.
"None of your business," Canary snapped. "Now step aside."
The other twin, Yan, wasn’t so easily convinced. His gaze locked onto Su HaiTan, assessing him like a threat. "Boss, you sure? Guys like him—"
"I said move," Canary repeated, her tone sharper.
The twins hesitated for a second longer before finally stepping aside, though their wariness didn’t fade. Su HaiTan, having observed the exchange in silence, finally moved. He stepped out of the car with a casual grace that only someone raised in high society could manage, slipping his hands into his pockets as he regarded the twins with mild disinterest.
Yun clicked his tongue. "Tch. Fancy suit, fancy car. What the hell is he doing here?"
"Stop talking," Canary muttered, already heading for the door.
Yan who heard this run toward her and began to wail, "Huhuhu Bossss! Why are you being so mean to us?! We have never seen this guy, what has he done to you? You hate men!!"
Canary closed her ears, pushing away Yan’s face from beside her left shoulders, "If I hate men you guys wouldn’t be here!"
"But we aren’t men anymore to you!" Yun agreed to his brother. "Beside look at his eyes! He looks so haught. Rich, spoiled, he doesn’t look like he knows the real world."
Su HaiTan followed without a word, but as he passed the twins, he spoke just loud enough for them to hear.
"But I am not immature or bald or idiotically childish," Su HaiTan answered which caused Yun to glare at him sharp. He frowned.
"What did you say kid-"
"SHUSH!" Canary placed her hand and covered Yan’s mouth, sighing aloud. "Now stop bothering the guests and you-" she turned to Su HaiTan, "I hope you understand that they are my family. They maybe rude but I don’t like to see others being rude to them."
Su HaiTan blinked and raised his hands, nodding faintly, "Understood ma’am."
She rolled her eyes and gestured with her hands for him to come inside. Su HaiTan followed without a word, but as he passed the twins, he spoke just loud enough for them to hear.
"For the record," he said smoothly, "if I ever needed to borrow money, I wouldn’t come here."
Yan bristled. Yun scoffed.
"Rich brat," Yan muttered under his breath.
Su HaiTan only smirked.
Inside, Canary led him through the dimly lit corridors of her office. The place was clean but worn, smelling faintly of cigarette smoke and old paperwork. The air was thick with the weight of debts, threats, and desperate people looking for a way out. It’s clear that though Canary had offered for help she wasn’t anywhere close to being a good or decent person, she didn’t try either which make her actions even more genuine than everyone else he had ever met.
"Welcome to my humble office," Canary said dryly, pushing open the door to her private room. It was a far cry from the luxury Su HaiTan was used to. There was only a run down brown desk, scattered documents that almost carpeted the floor, an old study lamp that was fighting for its life, and a couch that had seen better days.
Su HaiTan didn’t comment on the state of the place. Instead, he set the box of documents down on the desk and turned to her.
