Chapter 233: The Mighty Have Fallen
Chapter 233: The Mighty Have Fallen
The last thread of patience on Bai HaiZe’s head seemed to have snapped as his hand shot forward. He grabbed Su HaiTan by the collar, pulling him in with a force before shoving his back to the nearest wall. The impact was hard enough for everyone around to gasp, after all, no one would ever want to harm the young master of Su Family, fearing what could happen to him.
The bodyguards who were watching over Su HaiTan immediately rushed but he had stopped them, smirking even though he had been the one attacked by Bai HaiZe. He leaned forward and whispered, "Don’t worry, I’m not interested in spilling this news to anyone. Unlike Jiang NianNian, my lips are quite tight but you should fear her. She’s stupid you see," he tapped his head as if saying that Jiang NianNian’s one was too empty to be trusted. "You should keep an eye on her unless she spills about what you had done- oh, especially about the baby."
Bai HaiZe’s eyes flashed red. He raised his fist but was able to stop it in time as he smashed the wall beside Su HaiTan’s head. He gritted his teeth, pushing him away and then glaring at him, "I might be sick in the head but you? You’re not different."
"Hey," Su HaiTan stopped him with a chuckle. "I am different. I am worse."
"Psycho," Bai HaiZe gritted his teeth before storming out of the hall, leaving Su HaiTan to chuckle into a loud laughter while everyone around him was stunned.
They only knew Su HaiTan as someone kind and gentle, not knowing that he would be laughing when someone had shown an aggressive nature toward him. Yet despite this, he didn’t show a single change in his expression, holding to his jaw as his laughter came to a close.
Looking at the ceiling, Su HaiTan’s laughing eyes then came to dim into a nothingness. He sighed, "Now it’s boring."
"Su HaiTan!" His uncle, Su MengYan had rushed toward him upon hearing the clamor. He was about to leave but worrying about his nephew, he had decided to stay back, wanting to see for himself if his nephew was alright. "What happened? Were you attacked?"
Su HaiTan smiled, shaking his head, "There is no way anyone could succeed in hurting me uncle." he pointed out the amount of bodyguards lingering around him. "I just had a small quarrel with a friend. They left unhappy, that’s that. Besides, I doubt that you came back only to see if I got beaten up by someone. Anything, uncle?"
Although Su HaiTan was his nephew and should have resembled his late brother-in-law and sister, both lost in a tragic car accident, he was nothing like them. Instead, he took after his grandfather, the very man Bai HaiZe despised most. A greedy old vulture who valued wealth and fame above all else. A man who would crush his own children’s spirits just to preserve his reputation.
And now, looking at Su HaiTan, Bai HaiZe couldn’t help but see history repeating itself.
It seems as though they could try running away from blood, but they could never run away from it forever. He didn’t know who he should blame, whether it was that old man who had been buried in a nameless land or the elderly woman who had taken care of him. That old fox woman, Elder Hua.
Ruffling his hair, Su MengYan eyed him, "Do you really want to hurt someone else’s happiness for your own sake, HaiTan? I know that you know that Miss AiLin is currently engaged to Li ZiChen. I also know that while Elder Hua despises Li ZiChen, you shouldn’t have any reason to hate him too and play with her to bully and destroy someone else’s happiness."
Su HaiTan sighed. His uncle was always a goody two shoes, one who was a coward and a pushover. He would never want to be like his uncle, a man fearfully following others’ words because he couldn’t stand up for himself.
Rolling his eyes, he let out a bored sigh. "So?" he drawled, shrugging his shoulders as if the conversation barely held his interest. "Sure, I know she’s with Li ZiChen but so what, Uncle?" His lips curled into a smirk, eyes glinting with something unreadable. "If anything, you should be more worried about me than him."
Leaning back lazily, he continued, "They’re in a relationship, sure. But tell me, do you even know if I like AiLin enough to go through all this trouble? You should have been on my side," he furrowed his eyebrows, his expression looking hurt did wonders to make Su MengYan’s heart to waver from scolding him. "I still respected her choice, didn’t I? Besides, I did tell Elder Hua that I am fond of and like AiLin but I wasn’t the one who told her to force AiLin into the engagement that Elder Hua announced."
"Then you should talk with her-"
"She does things because she cares about me," Su HaiTan expressed innocently, "I don’t have the heart to scold her for doing what she thinks is right for me."
"Despite that, Hai Tan, if you separate someone’s love because of your own greed, you are going to regret it," Su MengYan said with a frown. "Even if you want to respect Elder Hua, you should try your best to tell her that she shouldn’t force the arrangement for AiLin’s sake."
"I’ll try," Su HaiTan answered as he sighed, "But I am disappointed in you, uncle. Especially to know that you will prioritize someone else’s happiness above mine. You are the only family member left in this world for me. It would have made me happier if you had at least pretended to care as half as Elder Hua cared for me. At least unlike you, she truly tries her best to make me happy."
Su MengYan who saw his nephew’s saddened face felt an ache in his heart. He raised his fingers, trying to think of a way where he could explain that his wish was indeed for his nephew’s happiness but without the cost of someone else’s happiness. But Su HaiTan had ignored his pleas, walking away from him before letting out a grin.
He hates his uncle and it would make him happy to see that his uncle was troubled and frustrated. Even though truthfully he didn’t really care whether Su MengYan would be on his side or someone else’s, he truly found it fun that his uncle would always look frustrated and torn when he mentioned about the lack of care and love his uncle tried to show him.
As Su HaiTan reached the stage back with Elder Hua, his grin softened. He wondered what he should do tomorrow to destroy everyone’s peace. Tonight was good but not enough.
Should he try to do something that’s going to ruin their day for good?
"You look happier," Elder Hua remarked upon seeing his face.
Su HaiTan chuckled, "You know me best Grandma. True, I’m happy, I just thought of a very fun game."
Elder Hua nodded, knowing that the "game" he mentioned was no normal game of fun and joy. She instead agreed with him, advising him with a hint of support, "You should play it well. Don’t lose."
"I never lost a game before grandma, watch and have fun."
When the morning came, AiLin had seen what she had planted going in a successful path. He had called Canary early in the morning, happy to see that Mrs Jiang had contacted Canary early in the morning after hearing that she was going to lend money.
Her plan this afternoon was to see the meeting, eavesdropping in the same location while Canary met Mrs Jiang in the coffee shop.
The coffee shop was nearly empty, its faded wooden tables and dim lighting giving it a forgotten charm. After seven years in business, it had yet to gain any real traction, making it the perfect place for a meeting no one should witness.
Mrs. Jiang stepped inside, her movements stiff with paranoia. She scanned the café, her body wrapped in layers of disguise, a scarf over her head, oversized sunglasses masking her face, a black mask concealing what little remained visible. Even in the sweltering summer heat, she wore a thick coat, as if the weight of her debts alone wasn’t suffocating enough.
It had been days since their project collapsed, and now the walls were closing in on her. Families were demanding refunds, money she had long spent on indulgences disguised as investments. She had told herself she would be able to pay it back, if only she had been more careful. But her extravagant habits had devoured more than half the funds, and now even her husband was struggling to cover the losses, his rage simmering beneath his carefully measured words.
She knew people were looking for her. Knew that if they found her, the quiet demands for repayment would turn into something far worse. Every shadow felt like a threat.
She took a seat, fingers tapping nervously against the table.
Unbeknownst to her, AiLin sat just behind the thin partition separating them. From her concealed position, she had a perfect vantage point—both to hear every whispered word and to watch the once-proud Mrs. Jiang fidget in distress. A slow, satisfied smile curled at AiLin’s lips.
How quickly the mighty fell.
