Chapter 216: Imposter Syndrome
Chapter 216: Imposter Syndrome
The more Li ZiChen heard about it, the more he realized how everything that Bai HaiZe had done for AiLin, was all the things that he had done for her. Placing lunch boxes with all her favorite things, stopping and locking Jiang NianNian group, and even sent all the reports to the teachers.
He frowned but as AiLin spoke continuously, he realized that she really wasn’t aware of the real person who had done all of this. He couldn’t blame her for not knowing about it, after all he was in the school a town away from hers. Though he had tried getting into her school, the things that had happened caused him to be denied of the school. It made no sense for someone of the Li Family to be rejected from a school but the school itself was affiliated with the Hua Family, most certainly Elder Hua.
She wouldn’t want him to be inside the school, especially as he was the child she had failed to kill.
That was why whenever he could, Li ZiChen would slip into the school, he would try to find AiLin and whenever things had gone sour he would be on her side, protecting her from the background. After that, he had befriended Mu Ke, the blind classmate of AiLin who mostly spend his time in the library with her.
But there was someone he could never win against, the young man who had always stayed beside AiLin who AiLin always appreciates being together with. He had also learned later on that AiLin liked Bai HaiZe as he remembered Bai HaiZe calling her his girlfriend.
Now... things weren’t as straightforward as the lies Bai HaiZe had said.
AiLin had rejected him. She appreciates his actions and does feel guilty for the help that he lent which only caused him further misfortune, but even that help were lies.
As she took a bite of her food, AiLin noticed Li ZiChen’s expression that seemed so upset which made her realize of the words she had used which mostly praised Bai HaiZe. She wondered if he was jealous, being upset because she had praised another man right in front of him. She also saw his furrowed eyebrows and his hand on the table that had turned into a fist.
She didn’t want him to feel upset yet somehow she felt rather delighted seeing his expression unhappy as it meant that deep down his jealousy felt adorable.
Reaching out her hand, she settled it on top of him, showing a smile, "But he’s a friend, now maybe lesser than that as a stranger."
Li ZiChen’s eyes widened a little and he quickly put a smile on his lips, "I know, I trust you. But I’m curious AiLin. Did you see Mr Bai doing it all for you or did he just tell you about it?"
"About his help?" She found the question odd but answered it regardless, "He told me about it, and also a lot of people beginning to shun him because he helped me, it’s well known even to the bullies."
"I see... when you were assaulted by OuYang... was he there too?" He asked her, softening his tone so it wouldn’t stagger her.
She thought about it before shaking her head, "No. Not really... I guess they try to find a time when I’m alone before starting their plan."
"You think so?" he asked while she nodded her head. He then smiled and kept his thoughts to himself. Amiss indeed. Bai HaiZe has always been amiss but today he was sure this sense of missing was clearer than ever.
The next day, AiLin started her day by placing a coin inside her piggy bank while Li ZiChen watched it. She walked towards him once she was done, holding the blue purse he bought for her, "I will come back soon! I just have to finish a few scenes and meet up with Mrs. Hua."
"Take care and be careful, call me whenever you need anything," he said before placing his hands on her head and kissing her forehead tenderly.
He could hear her giggle under his chin, her smile so soft and happy made him even more delighted than ever. After seeing AiLin off, Li ZiChen left the apartment with his car. He sat on the back, his eyebrows furrowed while his secretary spoke from the speaker inside the car, "Through the information we have gathered, Mr Bai had been living in Shanghai for the past six years ever since the incident. Before that, he was more active in school as an honor student after Miss AiLin. His family consists of his single mother who had remarried Minister Guan."
"Minister Guan," Li ZiChen repeated as he settled his back to the chair, "Isn’t he a close friend to Minister Hang?" And Minister Hang is both HangZhou’s father as well as MuKe.
"Indeed, they are still in a very close relationship until now," answered the secretary, "It’s also known that Minister Guan’s words are always respected by Minister Hang."
That would mean Minister Guan always had the upperhand against Minister Hang, so much so that it scared Minister Hang to disrespect Minister Guan’s words or requests.
This should be made known to the children and although Bai HaiZe is the son of his new wife, Minister Guan wouldn’t let his son be bullied in school by HangZhou.
Hang Zhou himself should have been warned of how important Bai HaiZe is.
"When was Bai Haize’s mother remarried to Minister Guan?" Li ZiChen’s next question arrived straight to the secretary who seemed to have expected the question as he replied within seconds.
"When Bai HaiZe finished his middle school year."
"So it was before AiLin’s case," Li ZiChen squeezed his fists. He could brush this as him being jealous of Bai Haize, he could. Say that he was just going insane out of jealousy because there was a part of AiLin he doesn’t know, a part that Bai HaiZe has from her.
But this wasn’t merely his jealousy talking, it was the truth. The truth is that Bai HaiZe was just a well constructed lie.
"What came after his high school?" Li ZiChen’s tone was enough to set the secretary on edge. It was rare for him to ever hear such a harsh and icy tone coming from Li ZiChen. As he always had a frightening face, Li ZiChen always put others on their toes and tense whenever they stood in front of him. This was something Li ZiChen always controlled, as he wasn’t truly fond of ruling by fear. That was why when his tone had turned this cold that the secretary knew someone had fucked up.
This someone goes by the name of Bai HaiZe.
Quickly, not wanting to further enrage Li ZiChen, the secretary informed, "He started his work in by hold atelier of arts. It seems that his hobby is painting and he is quite a well known artist in his field. There are rumors however that he uses those paintings to hide his tax evasion and that he has another business than selling the paintings."
"Check that information under eight hours and come to me again with more information; this time I want to know what his hobby is after hours and any rumors about him, negative or positive."
"Of course, Boss." Li ZiChen then walked out of his car as he had arrived straight at his company. As soon as he walked out, his men bowed accordingly, followed by all the staff of the company and the workers who saw him.
Tsuki came running beside him, holding to the documents that had made him sigh, "Boss, do we reallllly have to read all of this?"
"Why?" Li ZiChen asked without looking, pressing the button to the elevator while Tsuki softly sighed.
"Oh come on, I could fight, oh and for certain I could move my body around whether to protect or attack but I don’t want to sit here for hours reading nothing but this documents. Plus the writings are old as it’s been stored here for six years and it’s mostly burnt."
"Just read it, stop complaining and you’ll do it even faster," Li ZiChen walked inside the elevator as soon as he finished talking and Tsuki ran after him.
"But what is this all about? I mean this... document it’s filled with some kind of a diary entry."
"It’s the diary of the servant who was pregnant, the one who died when AiLin had burnt the Jiang Family’s house."
Flinching, his subordinate now looked scared. He also noticed a lot of people were always rattled upon hearing that AiLin had killed someone. It wasn’t only her fault but his. After all, he’s known to be slightly violent or maybe too violent and that caused some people to worry that he had chosen another violent person for him to spend the rest of his life with.
It was like a recipe for chaos, a ticking bomb waiting to explode.
"I can only trust this to you Tsuki. You’re good at reading between the lines, crack codes, and come to understand people’s emotions by writings," Li ZiChen then said that caused his subordinate’s eyes to widen and the flattery immediately caused Tsuki’s smile to dance.
"Well, if you need my help that much," he laughed, happily trying to hide his joy of being trusted by dancing his head around to side and side, "Oh but from what I have read, it seemed that her lover comes from the house. Someone... she doesn’t really name him by his name."
"Odd," Li ZiChen said.
"Odd right? If she loves him that much, he would have written the name."
"No," answered Li ZiChen, "The servants who live there only have six males, most of them are elder people. Leaving the three as married men."
"What? So it’s an affair?"
"Maybe, it would do good to look into it, tell Secretary Wu to add that into his search list and bring it on the deadline I put him."
