Chapter 183: Crescent Shaped Wounds
AiLin was careful as she held onto his hands, pressing her handkerchief to the bloodied skin. She could feel Li ZiChen watching her, waiting for the question even after she had asked him another question. His face said what needs to be said, that he would answer if pushed. She rose her head and chinned up, "I want to ask as well, you know. But I think it’s better for me not to ask you now in this restaurant. Ah!" she exclaimed in a whisper, "We need to go back to Vicky and XanXi. I left for such a long time, they must be worried."
While speaking, she kept a tight hold to his hands, something which Li ZiChen was watching. He let himself be pulled by her, his eyes however didn’t seem too energetic.
When they had entered the room, Vicky who had just stood up from her chair with XanXi flipped her head as soon as the door clicked open. She quickly rushed to AiLin but then took a step back after flinching when she found Li ZiChen standing right beside AiLin.
AiLin could see how her sister’s expression had shifted. Her wide eyes darted to Li ZiChen, but instead of relief, they brimmed with unease, as if his presence alone had unearthed a deeply buried fear.
This guess wasn’t far off as Vicky had always feared Li ZiChen since the moment they had seen each other and that was back when she was still in elementary school while Li ZiChen was in middle school. In a party where it was the birthday of Li ZiChen’s grandmother, Vicky who was brought by her late father had seen for herself how much the eldest son of the Li Family despise the Hua Family.
She had seen how frightening anger could mar that handsome face that everyone always swoon over. It was enough to leave her nerves frayed whenever he was near.
"Sorry, I got caught on something," Ailin broke her daze and saw how Vicky quickly pulled herself together, her paling face turning more colorful. "I think we both will go home now, I’ll tell everything to you later, Vicky."
"W- Wait is his hands bleeding?" XanXi spoke up and he didn’t recognize Li ZiChen at first until a closer look. His intimidating height almost made XanXi step back to look at his face from a far and then realizing who he was, "Mr. Li!"
Li ZiChen gave him a polite nod in return.
"Your hands are wounded, please wait here for a second, I will ask the restaurant’s manager to bring the first aid kit! It won’t take long," said XanXi who had rushed out off the room. Seeing him leave, Vicky raised her hand, almost following him but then found AiLin and decided to stay in the room even though she eventually retreated behind her.
"What happe- happened?" Vicky asked, hushing her voice even though everyone could hear it loud and clear.
"I entered the wrong room. Did you know Elder Hua like to eat here?" AiLin explained and saw her sister who was immediately rattled, her face losing all color as if the very blood had drained away.
"No way. No! She hates this place, she knows mother goes here most often. She also don’t like eating her because XanXi’s mother has this restaurant under her wings and XanXi’s mother had a small quarrel with her back before marrying his father." Vicky had explained in panic and she quickly pressed her phone, "Wait a moment, I have to tell mother and father about this."
While Vicky texted in panic, XanXi had came with a first aid kit, the young man running with so much speed that his breaths were too difficult for him to catch, "I tried knowing what we need but realized I don’t know much about medicine so I brought all of them."
AiLin thanked him after taking the box and led Li ZiChen to sit on the chair while she addressed his wounds, "Oh no, your skin," she whispered.
Li ZiChen was relaxed as she dabbed medicine, making her wonder if it doesn’t hurt as it should have hurt for him.
"I was the one who hit him until he’s knocked off, this wound is merely because I didn’t held back and hit the wall once to stop," Li ZiChen’s temperament had always been calm to her so she didn’t expect him to lose so much composure from himself to the point he had also hit the wall to calm his anger.
She didn’t notice how both XanXi and Vicky seemed to have shrank backward after hearing his words.
"He also clawed you," she sighed, bringing more bandage to his hands, realizing as she wrapped the white gauze over his left hand that had the snake tattoo that on the lower part of his arm was slashed marks.
The scars on his body weren’t all from a blade. Some of it were, but most were not. The crescent-shaped scars etched deeply into his skin looked as though they had been there for decades. They bore an unsettling resemblance to the nail marks Su HaiTan had left on his fingers when he had choked him.
By the time she had lifted her face and looked up, she saw him, her eyes seeing that he was watching at her while he showed her his scars willingly- no it’s as if he wanted to show it to her.
"Sister AiLin," Vicky said as she walked slowly while holding her phone with two hands, "I just checked and you were right. Seems like Elder Hua came here on purpose. I think she knew that we would meet up. That or.. someone else knew about it."
So was it Su HaiTan? No, Su HaiTan seemed surprised, but was Elder Hua very surprised seeing her? No. It’s as if she knew they would run to each other but wasn’t expecting her to walk into the room herself.
"I can guess what happened," Li ZiChen spoke up that brought her attention back at him. "That old witch has been wanting to see you and she thought of this as a perfect chance for an accidental meet up."
"I agree that witch- Elder Hua never likes to seem desperate but she must have been the one who was searching for a way to meet and see you for herself sister," confirmed Vicky. "Did she hurt you? Slap you?"
"She didn’t but she did make some harmful remark," AiLin shrugged her shoulders then as she wrapped the bandaged and closed the medicine box, "But it was nothing that I couldn’t handle. I just find it odd, was there enough reason for Elder Hua to dislike mother so much?"
Looking at Li ZiChen and then XanXi, Vicky thought about it as she didn’t want to air out her family’s business but after a while, she responded thoughtfully, "Elder Hua being the only daughter of the Hua Family was also dislike for being a girl. I heard she had went through life more miserable than mother when she was young but instead of trying to sympathize with the women who had gone through a rough time, she despise them and agreed with the idea that we are weak and that we are supposed to be owned by... someone."
Raising her eyebrows, AiLin muttered, "Internalized misogyny?"
"Maybe," said Li ZiChen, "I heard that she never nursed her baby after they were born, because she thinks giving birth is a woman’s responsibility but she never gave birth out of love unless it was her sons."
AiLin was frowning from all the informations she had heard when Vicky who was beside her nodding and adding, "Other than that there was a time when her husband, my late grandfather, demanded for her to birth him a male heir and she kept getting abortion forcefully and that rooted deeply in her. She eventually had to give birth to mother because if she had aborted it there would have a permanent consequences on her health so she didn’t have much choice."
"I see," AiLin couldn’t say that she understood Elder Hua but it seems the woman’s action was a mirror of the people and her environment. However she should have learnt how to break that ugly environment that had made her suffer. It was as if she had been brainwashed and that seemed rather pitiful.
But not pitiful enough when she thought about how Elder Hua had also tried to kill Li ZiChen, meaning though she had suffered perhaps she had always held an evil inside her that was so twisted that she would kill anyone that gets on her nerves or her way.
"There’s also that!" exclaimed Vicky.
"There’s more?" AiLin asked in a worry. "Seems like she’s a tough person to understand."
"It’s better that you don’t," Li ZiChen answered as he tugged her hand, bringing her ears closer to his lips. "Rumors also say that she was the one who killed her husband after finding out he had cheated. Her reasoning being that he isn’t useful to her anymore because she already has a son who overtook his company."
AiLin shuddered and finally she responded after a while, "So that’d mean she doesn’t only hate girls or women but she’s simply someone who thrive for success even if it means someone’s life would be the cost."
"Correct. So you don’t have to understand her, just be extremely careful when you’re around her. She might come off as a harmless elderly with just a tough personality to please. But you will know soon that she’s worse than what she looks."
