Chapter 170: Ice Cold Pond Water

Third Aunt huffed for breaths at the end of her words, she looked as if she had ran a mile with her face red as she turned her eyes back at AiLin who stared at her with face paled. The woman flinched seeing her negative reaction, thinking she had crossed the line.

Truthfully, AiLin wasn’t hurt by her words but her heart had dropped as Third Aunt mentioned that she could have had killed someone in the past just like her grandmother did. The truth was, she never remembered ever setting the house of Jiang family in fire which had caused the servants to die. But that guilt was pushed to her hands and now everyone would think she’s a murderer.

Mrs. Li who saw AiLin’s face immediately frowned and turned to look at third aunt, "I think you are going too far with your words, CaiTai. I know you’re worried but what’s the sin of a child who wasn’t capable of harm when Zi Chen was kidnapped? It’s enough, we shall not talk about this anymore."

"And why are you ordering me to not speak about this again?" Third Aunt snapped, feeling emotional that she couldn’t see the look on Senior Li’s face that had turned cold as she had questioned his wife’s authority.

"Don’t forget who you’re talking to, CaiTai," reminded Mrs. Li as she narrowed her eyes.

"Well, well," coughed Cousin Ling who felt the air had turned too strained, "I think it would be better if we settle this calmly. I’m sure CaiTai didn’t mean anything bad about AiLin. She’s just worried, especially since we don’t know much about AiLin but we can know about each other now."

CaiTai glared at Cousin Ling before she smashed her hand on the table and sat down quietly. Her husband beside her apologized to the head of the house, and then brought CaiTai out of the room, seemingly trying to ease her concern and calm her down while scolding her gently for her actions. The awkward air settled on the table for a while but not for too log as everyone had eagerly surrounded AiLin with questions.

But she couldn’t help and look at Li ZiChen who sat in font of her, who was also looking at CaiTai and her husband’s shadows outside the door.

During dinner time, AiLin felt more familiar with the family structure, how they were extremely respectful to the elder and the younger were all heeding to the say of the elders especially the head of the house, Senior Mr Li. AiLin had talked to most of the family member except Li ZiChen’s father. He was a man of little words, according to Mrs. Li and how some people might misinterpret his silence as his cold behavior when truthfully he had always been just a quitter man.

AiLin understood that as she had known people with little words. Though Li ZiChen was the opposite to her, she had heard from YanLan that he wasn’t a man of too many words, perhaps it wasn’t that Li ZiChen didn’t like talking but he just didn’t find anyone comfortable enough to make him talk a lot. So perhaps it’s the same for his father.

She didn’t think much as he was welcoming to her, pouring tea to her drink quietly when he saw it was empty. She took this as a gesture of acceptance.

"I think I will excuse myself to the washroom. I’m a bit too full," AiLin said as she excused herself to Mrs. Li who gently moved her seat.

"Sure, take your time. Oh should I show you the way to the washroom?"

"No problem, I think I know where it is," she answered and walked beside Li ZiChen who held her hands briefly as she passed by. She smiled seeing his gesture and quietly made her way out of the dining room, seeing the people behind her who were happily talking.

So far, she didn’t find anyone who was quite worrying. It was only Third Aunt’s behavior but she knew she couldn’t do much about it considering the woman’s intent wasn’t ill but only came out from extreme worries. After that, Third Aunt hadn’t came back at all and honestly she was worried but she didn’t think much of it.

The maids greeted her when she walked by the corridor and she stopped upon seeing the open door that showcased a pond of koi fishes and a bridge between it. Someone was there, talking to another person hidden behind the tree beside the bridge. They were arguing until one of them slipped and fell to the pond. AiLin’s eyes widened and she rushed toward the pond, disregarding her shoes and the fact she had slipped on a stone and fell to the ground. She saw the other person who seemed to be drowning and rushed toward it, saving the person who had fallen to the pond.

She realized after entering the ice cold pond that it was deep enough for an adult man to submerge and her footings were almost lost in it as she helped the person who had almost drowned to the ground.

AiLin then snapped her eyes at the person who was supposed to be hidden behind the tree, now gone, leaving her alone. She didn’t pay much attention to the person who had caused this accident and instead turned to look at the person who had drowned.

Pushing her wet hair that stick to her forehead, she placed her hand to the woman’s paled face, realizing it was Cousin Ling. She gasped, but not for long as she recalled before she had excused herself, Cousin Ling had gone to the place beforehand.

She worriedly checked her pulse and then her breathings. It seemed that the water had clogged her lungs and she was running out of oxygen. So without a single hesitation, AiLin lifted the woman’s chin, pressing her chest to compress and pushed her lips to Cousin Ling’s giving her the first air treatment as fast as she could. She counted aloud, "One, two, three, four, five.." she continued while she yelled for help in between her counting and as she gave breaths to helped Cousin Ling. Her body turned colder as the winter air had turned her fingers blue but she didn’t stop.

Then someone yelled behind her, she noticed it was a maid and the maid was quick to call everyone to the garden, along with the ambulance. AiLin saw Li ZiChen’s face that turned grim upon seeing her in the pond and rushed toward her.

"You’re alright?" He asked her first and at the same time, they heard Cousin Ling letting out a loud cough and her body shifting to the side as she struggled to stand up while throwing up a mouthful of water that had entered her lungs.

"Ha.. hah..." Cousin ling’s face was blue from fear and pale from the loss of oxygen. She stared at AiLin with eyes wide and colored in fear, "Ai.. you.."

"What happened?!" Mrs and Mr Li, the grandparents, and Third Aunt along with the rest of the family members asked upon reaching to the garden and seeing the mess.

"AiLin, what did you do?" The third aunt asked in an accusative tone. She crossed her arms and snapped her eyes to the situation, "Did you try to drown Ling?"

"What? No? Don’t you see what’s happening? I tried to help her with first aid because she fell to the pond," AiLin said with a frown, she firmly let everyone know what had happened so none would start imagining her as a cold hearted and ruthless murder. "Right Cousin Ling?" Ailin asked the Cousin who was shuddering, looking at her fearfully before back at everyone with a firm nod.

Though Cousin Ling didn’t deny her words, she was too frightened that it looked as if she was forced to nod by her.

AiLin knew that Cousin Ling was shaken so she pursed her lips and accepted the suspicion that befall on her.

Li ZiChen took off his coat, immediately wrapping her around it and then looking at her lips that had gone blue, his eyes panicked.

"You’re not good with water and coldness, let’s get you to the warmth first before we take care of this problem," Li ZiChen stood up and as she was about to stand, she felt his hands that wrapped around her body as if she was a bundle of clothes and then carried her swiftly inside the house, telling to the servants, "Turn up the heater in my room. Now!" He yelled again when they dawdled, in shock, trying to understand what happened.

Mrs. Li clicked her tongue and followed her son. She looked at her husband and then at CaiTai as she walked away, following her son and daughter in law.

Meanwhile, Mr. Li was left with the mess and he first look at CaiTai, speaking sternly, "You need to go back to your house now, CaiTai."

"What? But I.."

"Enough. Enough is enough," senior Mr. Li answered with a frown, "Do you think I haven’t noticed what you’ve been trying to do? Putting a girl of her age to such bullying, aren’t you embarrassed? You’ll regret not hearing to my words, CaiTai. Leave now for your own good."

CaiTai gritted her teeth, "But what about the person who had caused for Cousin Ling to fall? We need to find the perpetrator!"

"I can take care of that. The head of the house is me, that is my responsibility," warned Senior Mr Li as he turned toward Cousin Ling who was brought in by the other family members as they discussed the idea of carrying her to the ambulance. He then turned to his son’s room, narrowing his eyes as he knew someone here had lied.
