Chapter 93: Temporary Stay

Chapter 93: Chapter 93: Temporary Stay

Su Mu and Jiang Bei had never expected Wen Shaoyuan to come to Bishui Yuntian, all alone, squatting at the entrance of the neighborhood with two police officers standing beside him, patiently persuading him about something, but from a distance Su Mu could see that he seemed not to be listening at all.

Hurrying her steps, Su Mu approached Wen Shaoyuan and then slowly squatted down in front of him, looking at him with pain in her eyes as she called out:

"Shaoyuan."

Hearing the familiar voice, Wen Shaoyuan slowly lifted his head, his eyes lacking the usual brightness when he saw her, only looking at her and responding, "Sister Su."

"Did you come looking for me?"

Wen Shaoyuan nodded, "I’ve been waiting for you for a long time."

"Are you cold?" Su Mu asked as she took off her coat and wrapped it tightly around Wen Shaoyuan: "Sister will take you back to her home, okay?"

Wen Shaoyuan didn’t speak, but he didn’t refuse either.

Jiang Bei had been thanking the police all the while Su Mu and Wen Shaoyuan were talking, promising to take good care of the child so nothing like this would happen again; only after this did the police leave. Jiang Bei stood not far from the two, looking at Wen Shaoyuan in resignation and helplessness, ultimately saying nothing.

In Bishui Yuntian, Auntie Lin was a bit surprised by Su Mu’s sudden return, especially with a 4 or 5-year-old child in tow, but she quickly welcomed them:

"Madam, this is...?"

"A friend’s child, he’s been feeling down lately and came to relax," Su Mu replied.

She didn’t describe Wen Shaoyuan’s action as ’running away from home,’ preferring to treat it as an outburst of accumulated negative emotions.

"None of the three of us have eaten yet, Auntie Lin, could you please help us prepare something? It doesn’t need to be complicated, just make some noodles," Su Mu requested.

Auntie Lin agreed and turned to go to the kitchen.

Jiang Bei sized up the villa that was extravagantly large, observing, "I’ve always heard there’s a certain gap between being rich and being extremely rich. Now that I’ve come to your place, I understand the difference. Fu Shinian must be from the extremely rich bunch."

Without much option, Su Mu glanced at her and didn’t bother to argue, instead turning her attention to Wen Shaoyuan, who was equally curious:

"How about Sister takes you upstairs to have a bath first? You’ve been outside for so long, if you don’t warm up you might get sick."

Wen Shaoyuan nodded obediently:

"Okay."

Already a little man at the age of five, he refused the companionship of Su Mu and Jiang Bei. Worried about another incident, Jiang Bei spoke up:

"I’m a doctor. It doesn’t matter if you’re a little boy or a grown man; I’ve seen countless patients before. You might refuse a teacher, but you can’t refuse me as a doctor. I must accompany you."

Wen Shaoyuan gave her a dismissive glance:

"You should save that speech for your patients. I’m not a patient, not hospitalized, not under your care."

Jiang Bei: "...I’m just trying to look out for you."

"I know, but I don’t need it." Before entering the bathroom, Wen Shaoyuan paused briefly, glancing back at Jiang Bei who still seemed worried about him, and said, "Thank you, Auntie Xiaobei."

Su Mu didn’t join in on the conversation, she simply called Wen Han after Wen Shaoyuan entered the bathroom to discuss the situation:

"Does he usually stay alone? I’m worried about him."

Perhaps finally having found the child relieved some tension, Wen Han’s voice relaxed as he chuckled softly:

"Yes, he’s always by himself. It might be because we aren’t often there for him, which is why he’s so independent."

"Then I’m relieved."

"Su Mu," Wen Han paused for a moment, "I really want to thank you today. I’ve already notified the driver to pick up Shaoyuan from your place. He should be there in about half an hour."

Upon hearing this, Su Mu asked:

"Has someone come back home?"

Wen Han remained silent for a few seconds:

"No, my parents and I won’t be able to return for another couple of days."

"So it’s still just Shaoyuan’s grandmother at home?"

Wen Han didn’t say anything else, but Su Mu understood:

"Wen Han, this is your family matter and I shouldn’t say much, but as a teacher, I don’t think it’s the right time for Wen Shaoyuan to go back. If that home gave him enough sense of security, he wouldn’t have taken the actions he did today. He left because he didn’t want to return to that house."

"I know."

I knew, but I was still powerless to do anything. There are too many obligations that we can’t control, preventing us from returning home whenever we wish. Wen Shaoyuan is first and foremost a military man, then a father.

"If you’re okay with it..." Su Mu slowly began, "Wen Shaoyuan can stay with me temporarily."

After hanging up the phone, Su Mu realized she had been a bit impulsive, but given a chance to choose again, she believed she would make the same decision. She just couldn’t stand by and watch Wen Shaoyuan return to a home he might run away from at any moment.

They were lucky to find him this time, but they might not be so lucky next time.

When she turned around, Su Mu noticed Jiang Bei had been sitting not far behind her all along. She smiled faintly:

"Why are you looking at me like that?"

"I know you want to keep Xiaobei for his own good, but what about Fu Shinian? Will he agree?" Jiang Bei looked at her, "I can see that you two have been getting along well recently, so I really don’t want other issues to become new obstacles for you. Maybe I should take Xiaobei away myself."

Su Mu smiled slightly:

"Aren’t you busy? Don’t you have to work?"

"I can take time off."

"Let’s not talk about whether your department allows for easy leave requests. Even if you manage to get time off, Shaoyuan might not be willing to go back with you." Su Mu sat down next to Jiang Bei, "Just let him stay here with me. He probably wants that too; otherwise, he wouldn’t have come here by himself. As for Shinian... I’ll talk to him."

Jiang Bei looked at her, regretfully speaking out:

"Why did I have to book a trip for my parents right now? Otherwise, I could have sent Xiaobei to stay with them."

Since Wen Shaoyuan didn’t bring any clothes, Su Mu could only let him wear one of her T-shirts, which hung on him like a dress. Wen Shaoyuan emerged from the bathroom feeling awkward, his little face red with either shyness or from the heat of the bath, looking so cute that Jiang Bei couldn’t resist reaching for her phone to capture the moment. When Wen Shaoyuan noticed, he immediately frowned:

"Auntie Xiaobei, I did not agree to you taking my picture."

"It’s too bad not to record such cuteness," Jiang Bei pressed the shutter button, "Trust me, when you grow up and have a girlfriend, she’ll love you even more when she sees this photo."

Wen Shaoyuan felt he simply couldn’t communicate with Jiang Bei. He quietly hid behind Su Mu:

"Sister Su, I’m hungry..."

Su Mu looked up and tousled his hair, "I’ll dry your hair first, then we can go down to eat, okay?"
