Chapter 658: Grand Finale
Chapter 658: Chapter 658: Grand Finale
Su Mu had never considered the issue of having a second child. After having Qiqi, she never thought she’d find another man, and since reconciling with Fu Shinian, she hadn’t had time to ponder such things. Besides, she truly hadn’t thought about having another child.
Having Qiqi was enough for her.
She’d read plenty of news about how the issue of a second child had caused psychological trauma to the eldest sibling, leaving them feeling neglected and becoming resentful. She didn’t want that. So, Fu Shinian’s suggestion left her momentarily stunned before she prepared to refuse outright. However, Qiqi suddenly chimed in:
"Mom, are you going to have a baby brother?"
Su Mu turned to Qiqi, thinking she might be upset and instinctively glared at Fu Shinian. But Fu Shinian seemed entirely oblivious, smiling warmly at Qiqi:
"Do you want one, Qiqi?"
Qiqi nodded eagerly:
"Yes, I do."
Those two words were so cheerful and sincere, devoid of any falseness. This left Su Mu astonished. But in the next moment, Qiqi looked at Su Mu and said, "I’ve always wanted a little brother. But before, you weren’t with Dad, so no matter how much I wanted one, it wouldn’t have mattered."
Su Mu: "..."
"Mom, will you have one?" Qiqi looked at Su Mu and then at Fu Shinian. "Or do you guys not even plan on staying together, and the remarriage is just for show?"
Although Qiqi’s logic left Su Mu momentarily unable to react, it reminded her of Qiqi’s previous mischievous and clever personality—playful, quirky, and full of calculated intent. She was nearly charmed by this side of Qiqi and responded:
"Qiqi, do you really want a baby brother?"
"Yes."
Fu Shinian said, "If Mom has a baby brother, will you believe that we’re truly staying together and not just pretending to be a family?"
Qiqi nodded:
"Exactly. If you two have two children, you certainly won’t separate, right?"
Fu Shinian found the logic compelling and turned to look at Su Mu, whose gaze seemed to reveal a hint of panic. She stood up abruptly: "Fu Shinian, don’t tell me you want one too?"
"I didn’t before. I always thought having Qiqi was enough, and honestly, I didn’t want you to go through the exhaustion again. But now, Qiqi wants one. Would you really deny her such a wish?" Fu Shinian said pitifully, clearly having joined forces with Qiqi.
Su Mu gritted her teeth, ready to refuse outright. But somehow, when the words left her lips, they became:
"It’s not just about deciding to have a baby brother. What if it’s a baby sister instead?"
Qiqi beamed at Su Mu:
"That’s fine too! Xiaobei’s mom is about to have a baby brother, isn’t she? Having a baby sister would be even better for me!"
It seemed... there was no way to refuse. Feeling frustrated with herself, Su Mu sat back down in her chair and muttered, "We’ll talk about it later."
Fu Shinian saw that Su Mu genuinely didn’t want to discuss this further. Smiling faintly, he scooped Qiqi into his arms and began whispering to her. Su Mu’s attention had initially been on the delivery room, but gradually found her gaze shifting toward Qiqi and Fu Shinian beside her.
Perhaps it was a trick of her imagination, but ever since confessing to Qiqi about their plans to remarry today, she couldn’t help but notice that Qiqi had been smiling more, talking more. Now, nestled in Fu Shinian’s arms, it was hard to tell the difference between her and her old self.
These days truly felt blissful.
Half an hour later, Su Mu heard the sound of a baby crying. She instinctively turned to Fu Shinian, who was smiling at her. Su Mu stood up from her chair just as a nurse emerged from the delivery room. Upon seeing Su Mu and Fu Shinian, the nurse gave a small smile:
"Both mother and son are safe."
The tension in Su Mu’s chest finally eased, her worries dissipating.
After the delivery, both Jiang Bei and the child needed to be kept under observation for two hours. Su Mu and Fu Shinian stayed outside to wait. During that time, Qiao Yu arrived. Learning that mother and son were safe, he visibly relaxed:
"I just finished a surgery when I heard Jiang Bei and Ji Nanfeng had arrived. I guessed it was time, so I rushed over."
Fu Shinian patted Qiao Yu’s shoulder without saying anything. Qiao Yu chuckled: "Don’t look at me like that. I don’t have any feelings for Jiang Bei now. But the way you’re looking at me—Ji Nanfeng might want to come after me for it."
Two hours could feel long or short. But with good friends and loved ones around, time seemed to fly by in an instant. When the delivery room doors finally opened, Jiang Bei was wheeled out, with Ji Nanfeng by her side, holding her hand without letting go. Su Mu rushed forward, noting how exhausted Jiang Bei appeared:
"Don’t say anything. Don’t. I’m just glad you’re okay. You’ve worked so hard."
Jiang Bei offered a small smile, attempting to speak, but a sudden sobbing sound caught her attention. She instinctively turned toward the noise, only to see Ji Nanfeng shedding tears he had tried so hard to suppress. The sight left Jiang Bei speechless:
"Ji Nanfeng, I’m the one who needs comforting right now. Can you stop crying so I don’t have to console you?"
"I know, I know," Ji Nanfeng promised. "I just didn’t expect having a baby would make you suffer so much. If I’d known, we wouldn’t have gone through with it. Who needs a baby anyway? Now I look at the baby and hate him—it’s his fault you’re in pain."
Jiang Bei rolled her eyes slightly:
"Sure. Without those harmonious activities between us, I wouldn’t have gotten pregnant in the first place."
Ji Nanfeng: "I’ll start using protection. Double layers."
"You might as well get a vasectomy."
Ji Nanfeng instinctively looked at Qiao Yu: "Can you arrange that for me?"
Qiao Yu outright ignored him. Witnessing firsthand the trauma of childbirth had clearly driven Ji Nanfeng half-mad—Qiao Yu saw no point in engaging with a lunatic.
"Stop talking nonsense here. The hallway’s drafty. Take her back to the ward."
"Yes, yes, yes." Ji Nanfeng meticulously tucked Jiang Bei’s blankets around her despite them already being windproof. "Let’s go back to the ward."
From the moment they exited the delivery room until now, Ji Nanfeng hadn’t spared so much as a glance at his child. Fu Shinian didn’t find it hard to understand—if he were in Ji Nanfeng’s shoes, he wouldn’t have the energy to focus on the baby either.
Su Mu had been through childbirth herself, yet faced with the tiny bundle in the nurse’s arms, she still hesitated to hold it. Fu Shinian held Qiqi as they both studied the baby. Qiqi’s bright eyes were sparkling:
"Am I an older sister now?"
"Yes, Qiqi, you’re an older sister now."
Upon returning to the ward, Jiang Bei had already fallen asleep, and Ji Nanfeng remained in his statue-like stance, holding her hand tightly, seemingly unaware of the others’ arrival.
Su Mu watched Ji Nanfeng in this state and felt certain that the decision she’d made outside the delivery room was the right one.
After the confinement nanny arrived, Su Mu and Fu Shinian prepared to leave. Jiang Bei needed rest, and there wasn’t much Su Mu could do for her now. She thought of going home to personally prepare some delicious food for Jiang Bei—just like how Jiang Bei had once treated her.
During Jiang Bei’s hospitalization, Su Mu spent almost all her time at the hospital, which annoyed Ji Nanfeng enough to secretly call Fu Shinian: "Hey, your wife isn’t having an affair with one of the doctors here, is she? Why does she keep coming back to the hospital?"
Fu Shinian, quick to recognize Ji Nanfeng’s diminished intelligence since the delivery, chose to hang up immediately.
On the day Jiang Bei was discharged, practically everyone showed up. The ward was filled with laughter, even the baby seemed to grin. While Ji Nanfeng was handling the paperwork, Fu Shinian secretly handed a red envelope to Jiang Bei. Jiang Bei glanced at it before looking up:
"What’s this? Didn’t you already give me one?"
"It’s from Rong Shen. He said he couldn’t come, but he wishes the child good health and happiness."
Jiang Bei paused for a moment, then took the envelope. "I see."
The envelope wasn’t thick—it only contained a single card. Many years later, Jiang Bei would learn that the card was under her name, and every year on the baby’s birthday, a substantial amount of money would be deposited into the account without fail.
When Ji Nanfeng returned, Wei Shaoqin was asking Jiang Bei whether she had named the baby yet. Ji Nanfeng eagerly chimed in:
"I’ve got the perfect name!"
"What is it?" Everyone leaned in with anticipation.
"Ji Nianbei!"
The room: "..."
In the deafening silence, Ji Nanfeng alone brimmed with excitement, waiting for everyone’s response. Jiang Bei was the first to break the silence, and her words weren’t directed at Ji Nanfeng. Her message to everyone in the room was this:
"I don’t recognize this man, and my son doesn’t want to, either."
Ji Nanfeng looked at Jiang Bei, puzzled: "Xiaobei, why would you say that? Don’t you like the name?"
Jiang Bei gritted her teeth as she stared at him: "I like your big-headed *self*, that’s what I like!"
Qiao Yu couldn’t hold back his laughter, pointing out the unintended similarity: "Nanfeng, don’t you think ’Ji Nianbei’ sounds too much like ’Ji Nianbei’ (monument)?"
Ji Nanfeng paused momentarily:
"And? Just because of that, my son can’t be named Ji Nianbei? That doesn’t make sense. I want my son named Ji Nianbei. My surname is Ji, we take the Bei character from Jiang Bei’s name, and ’Nian’ signifies remembrance—a heartfelt tribute to Jiang Bei’s sacrifices. I want my son to always remember his mother’s love and hardships. Doesn’t that have deep meaning?"
Su Mu smiled faintly, agreeing with the name:
"It’s a wonderful name."
"Right? Isn’t it?" Ji Nanfeng, reenergized by Su Mu’s approval, looked to Jiang Bei, seeking validation: "See? Even Su Mu thinks it’s great! She’s your closest friend. Won’t you reconsider?"
Jiang Bei turned to Su Mu, utterly exasperated:
"Susu, if someone has kidnapped you, just blink twice."
"No," Su Mu chuckled. "I sincerely think it’s meaningful. It’s Ji Nanfeng’s heartfelt intention. And once you’re used to it, doesn’t the name have a certain beauty to it?"
Feeling cornered, Jiang Bei sighed in resignation. And thus, Ji Nianbei’s name was finalized.
On the day before New Year’s Eve, Su Mu and Fu Shinian brought Qiqi along to the Civil Affairs Bureau to collect their marriage certificate. They were officially remarried. They didn’t tell anyone, as most people already saw them as husband and wife, making the formality seem moot.
Qiqi was elated, cherishing the marriage certificate and even insisting on keeping it herself. Neither Su Mu nor Fu Shinian objected.
Qiqi’s recent changes had been obvious. Though she retained traces of the transformation she’d undergone after her disappearance, she had gradually become more open and cheerful. Fu Shinian and Su Mu, finally relieved, believed that as time went by, Qiqi would become her old self again, and even happier.
As the New Year approached, Fu Shiyue returned to Gui Ning Residence. She’d been absent for a few days, but she had clearly planned her return carefully. Su Mu had been concerned she might not make it back for the holiday but hadn’t asked her directly about her whereabouts. She had, however, secretly inquired whether she’d found Yu Qingzhou. Fu Shiyue remained silent for a few seconds before nodding:
"We met, but he doesn’t want to come back yet. His lifelong wish has always been to travel across China. He wants to take advantage of this time to do just that. He didn’t say he wouldn’t return, but I can tell he wants to leave some space for both of us right now."
"He’ll come back," Su Mu reassured her. "You’re his only family. He won’t bear to stay away forever. Perhaps he feels this time apart is too brief. After some more time has passed and when you’ve fully settled your emotions, he’ll return. I truly believe he will."
Fu Shiyue smiled but didn’t respond further.
On New Year’s Eve, the elderly matriarch refused to stay in her room, insisting that Fu Shinian carry her out to the living room to sit on the sofa and watch the family busy themselves decorating.
The last truly joyous New Year for the Fu family had been three years ago. Since then, celebrations had been muted and lonely. But now, not only had Su Mu returned and reconciled with Fu Shinian, but there was also the lively presence of little Qiqi bringing cheer as she darted around the room. The laughter and warmth felt like the most beautiful symphony, impossible to look away from.
The colored lights on the floor-to-ceiling windows were hung by Su Mu and Fu Shinian together. Although Fu Shinian had been discharged from the hospital for a month, Su Mu still worried: "Are you sure you can manage?"
"With you down here to catch me, what’s there to worry about?"
"If you actually fall, I won’t be able to catch you."
"I won’t fall. On such a happy day, nothing unexpected will happen."
Su Mu glanced toward the scene Fu Shinian had been watching—a doting grandmother teaching Qiqi how to cut paper snowflakes. The warmth radiating from the tableau was captivating, and Su Mu found herself staring until finally tearing her gaze away and looking at Fu Shinian. To her surprise, she found him already looking at her. When their eyes met, Su Mu’s smile widened:
"After we finish the New Year’s meal, let’s take a family photo."
"Okay."
The lights were hung successfully, and Fu Shinian stepped down from the ladder. In one smooth motion, he pulled Su Mu into his arms. She froze momentarily, instinctively struggling to escape. Although these tender displays of affection had become frequent since his discharge, they usually happened when they were alone. With people bustling in the living room, Su Mu couldn’t help feeling a little self-conscious. Still, Fu Shinian didn’t let go, holding her tightly. He pressed his warm lips against her forehead, his voice low and gentle:
"Su Mu, I love you."
Su Mu took a few seconds to process the weight of those heartfelt words, then slowly wrapped her arms around him: "Me too, just like before."
"Thank you for coming back to me. Thank you for giving me a warm home. Thank you for choosing to share your life with me. I’m so lucky."
Outside, snow had begun to fall, quickly blanketing Gui Ning Residence in a pristine white coat. Nestled in Fu Shinian’s embrace, Su Mu gazed at the serene and picturesque view out the window. Her life, nearly three decades long, had never felt so tranquil. She wished she could freeze this moment forever.
Qiqi, who had been observing them for an unknown amount of time, suddenly spoke, her voice shattering their peaceful bubble just as Su Mu was beginning to drift into contented drowsiness:
"Dad, Mom, it’s time for the New Year’s meal~!"
Both Su Mu and Fu Shinian turned to look at the little girl, her face glowing with joy as she stood beneath them and beamed up at them. They couldn’t help but smile back. Fu Shinian released Su Mu and bent down to pick up Qiqi. As he headed toward the dining room, he reached out to take Su Mu’s hand. His gaze was deep and tender:
"Come on, let’s have our reunion dinner."
