Chapter 652: Chapter 652: Tell Him You Miss Him Very Much
Su Mu and Fu Shinian’s conversations never really had a focal point. After all, they weren’t dialogues; usually, Su Mu would just say whatever came to mind, her thoughts roaming freely. Sometimes it was about Qiqi, other times about herself, occasionally about everything at Gui Ning Residence, and even sometimes about encounters at the hospital.
They had been through so much together—long past the stage of deliberately finding topics to talk about. Even spending an entire day without saying much wouldn’t feel awkward. Yet now Fu Shinian lay here, and the doctor had said that having people nearby talking to him might help him wake up sooner.
In truth, even if the doctor hadn’t said that, Su Mu would still talk to him.
After all, she missed him so, so much.
She wanted him to wake up quickly.
Wanted him to hold her.
Wanted him to shoulder everything now.
It wasn’t until Fu Shinian was lying here that Su Mu realized what burdens this man had been carrying on his shoulders all along.
The door to the hospital room was gently pushed open. At first, Su Mu didn’t pay much attention—nurses occasionally came in to change Fu Shinian’s IV or check on him. But this time, after the door creaked behind her, there were no accompanying footsteps drawing near, and Su Mu began to feel slightly puzzled.
Unable to resist, she turned her head for a look and froze at just one glance.
Standing at the doorway was Qiqi, barefoot, wearing an oversized hospital gown that seemed to swallow her up, making her look pitifully fragile, as if she might collapse in the next moment.
Since returning, Qiqi hadn’t spoken a single word, nor had she walked out of the room except to occasionally go to the bathroom. But now, without anyone persuading or helping her, she had taken the initiative to leave her room. Judging by her demeanor, she didn’t appear to be wandering aimlessly—she seemed to have a clear purpose, which startled Su Mu.
She immediately got up and approached, crouching down in front of Qiqi:
"Qiqi, why are you here?"
Qiqi glanced at Su Mu, then her gaze fell on Fu Shinian, lying on the hospital bed. She raised her hand and pointed at him, still remaining silent, but Su Mu understood her meaning in this wordless moment. Su Mu also turned to look at Fu Shinian, then smiled gently:
"Did Qiqi miss Daddy?"
When Su Mu said this, she didn’t expect any reaction from Qiqi—after all, these past days, no matter what anyone said or did, Qiqi always remained indifferent, as though nothing that happened had anything to do with her. Su Mu had no expectations. But she hadn’t anticipated that, after she uttered these words, Qiqi would nod.
The feelings were hard to put into words—perhaps there wasn’t a language in the world capable of capturing the surge of emotions Su Mu felt at that moment. Her eyes brimmed with tears so suddenly and uncontrollably they spilled over, like a flood that couldn’t be contained. Qiqi saw, hesitated briefly, and then did something Su Mu didn’t anticipate—she reached out her hand and gently wiped away the tears on Su Mu’s cheek.
In that moment, Su Mu wanted nothing more than to hold Qiqi tightly and cry her heart out. Yet she worried that her own emotions might frighten Qiqi, especially since she was just starting to improve. She absolutely couldn’t risk startling her back into retreat. So, she suppressed all her intense feelings, gave her a gentle embrace, and finally kissed her forehead:
"Mommy’s fine. Let me take you to talk to Daddy."
Qiqi nodded, allowing Su Mu to pick her up and take her step by step to the bedside.
Fu Shinian was still asleep, untouched by Qiqi’s presence. He seemed completely unaware of the change in his surroundings—much less this seemingly small transformation that was monumental for Su Mu. Qiqi sat quietly on Su Mu’s lap, her eyes fixed attentively on Fu Shinian, never blinking.
After a long while, Qiqi turned her face and glanced back at Su Mu. Meeting her puzzled eyes, Su Mu realized she was asking why Fu Shinian was still asleep. Su Mu understood, but instead of explaining, she hoped Qiqi might try speaking— even just one simple word, which would be a huge step forward for her.
"What’s wrong, Qiqi?"
Qiqi frowned slightly, seemingly dissatisfied with Su Mu’s response. But she still didn’t speak. This time, she pointed at Fu Shinian again, her meaning clear. Su Mu suppressed the excitement rising in her heart, pretending to be clueless:
"If Qiqi doesn’t say anything, how will I know what you’re asking?"
Qiqi’s frown deepened. Just as Su Mu thought she’d finally speak in the next moment, Qiqi instead turned her head away, resuming her earlier quiet stance—as if none of this had even happened.
Su Mu couldn’t fully understand why Qiqi had been resisting speech since her return. She knew Qiqi must have endured unimaginable pain, both physically and emotionally. Yet here and now, surrounded by her closest loved ones, Qiqi still rejected and resisted connection. Su Mu felt impatient but held it back.
Sighing silently, Su Mu placed Qiqi’s hand on Fu Shinian’s. She directed her words to him:
"I used to worry Qiqi might be affected by seeing you, so I hadn’t brought her here until now. But today, she made the choice herself to come find you. You should know that this is the first time since coming back that she’s willingly left her room. I know you’ve heard about Qiqi being back with me, but you must have been worried. Well, now she’s holding your hand—can you feel it?"
"Shinian, Qiqi needs you. Please get better soon—to be there for her, and for me too."
That night, Qiqi stayed by Fu Shinian’s side for a long time. When Su Mu tried to take her back to her room, Qiqi was reluctant to leave. Su Mu had no choice but to compromise:
"Qiqi, it’s very late now. Let’s rest in our own room tonight. Tomorrow, I’ll ask the nurse to set up a bed next to Daddy’s. Then you can sleep with him, okay? Just for tonight, don’t make a fuss."
Qiqi listened. She didn’t object. In the end, she reluctantly let go of Fu Shinian’s hand, allowing Su Mu to carry her back to her room.
The next morning, when Jiang Bei came to see Qiqi, he discovered she wasn’t in her room. The room had been tidied so meticulously it seemed as though no one had ever stayed there. Jiang Bei, perhaps accustomed to imagining the worst after everything, rushed to the nurse station in alarm:
"Where’s Qiqi? Why isn’t she in her room?"
Jiang Bei’s question stemmed from knowing Qiqi resisted interacting with others and rarely took more than a few steps. The chance of her leaving the room on her own seemed implausible in the short term.
The nurse, seeing Jiang Bei’s urgency, didn’t dare delay and quickly explained:
"Dr. Jiang, please don’t worry. Qiqi hasn’t gone anywhere—she just missed her father and went to Mr. Fu’s room. This morning, we added a bed in Mr. Fu’s room for her."
Jiang Bei raised an eyebrow in surprise; even Ji Nanfeng behind him seemed a bit taken aback:
"Does Qiqi know about Mr. Fu?"
"She does. We’re not sure how, but she got out of bed by herself in the middle of the night and went to see Mr. Fu. In any case, this is a positive step for Qiqi."
This was certainly good news. Jiang Bei immediately strode toward Fu Shinian’s room impatiently. Ji Nanfeng, caught off guard by Jiang Bei’s sudden rush, called out nervously while following: "Slow down, you little ancestor! Don’t trip!"
When they pushed open the hospital room door, Jiang Bei saw Qiqi leaning against Fu Shinian’s bed, holding his hand. She was motionless, looking at the sleeping Fu Shinian intently. Su Mu turned her head as she heard the noise, offering Jiang Bei a faint smile and rising from the sofa:
"You’re here?"
Jiang Bei snapped out of it and walked over to Su Mu, lowering his voice to ask:
"What’s going on here?"
Su Mu smiled and shook her head:
"I’m not quite sure myself, but it’s definitely a good change. By the way, I’ll let you in on something—Qiqi spoke this morning."
Jiang Bei froze, and what followed was an expression of unconcealable joy:
"She spoke? Really? What did she say?"
"Nothing dramatic. Last night, she insisted on staying in Shinian’s room. I didn’t agree and told her I’d add a bed here today. Then, this morning, when I checked on her, she was already awake. She looked at me for a while and said, ’Wood, you said you’d add a bed.’"
Jiang Bei nearly burst into tears upon hearing Su Mu’s words. She hadn’t anticipated her current self to be so emotionally fragile. But regardless, Qiqi was improving, and that was more than enough to make her thrilled. Wanting to talk to Qiqi, she was stopped by Su Mu:
"She’s spoken, but hasn’t said anything since. She just stayed in this position with Shinian, ignoring everything I said. But she’s acknowledging things now, nodding and shaking her head—she’s responding. I think she just needs more time. Once Shinian wakes up, everything will gradually get better."
Though Su Mu said so, Jiang Bei couldn’t help but pull up a chair to sit next to Qiqi. She smiled warmly at her, showing all her care and kindness:
"Qiqi, do you remember me?"
Qiqi took a few seconds before glancing at Jiang Bei and then nodding. Just as Jiang Bei thought she might say something, she turned her head back to Fu Shinian, refocusing on his face as if that was the only thing she cared about—the one thing she was determined to stick by.
Jiang Bei wasn’t disappointed. After all, every bit of progress Qiqi made now felt monumental. Like Su Mu said, there’s no need to rush; her care for Fu Shinian was a positive sign. Even if she wasn’t fully healed yet, once Fu Shinian awakened, everything would get better, bit by bit.
Since Fu Shinian’s return, almost half a month had passed. Jiang Bei’s due date was fast approaching, and Su Mu couldn’t help noticing how much larger her stomach seemed compared to just a few days ago. It was almost alarming to look at. When Jiang Bei visited today, Su Mu couldn’t help but remind her:
"You’re scheduled for a checkup today, right? Make sure you rest up afterward. I feel like your belly is significantly bigger these days."
Talking about the baby in her belly brought a softer expression to Jiang Bei’s face. She smiled gently:
"Don’t worry. I’ve already had my checkup today, and everything looks great. There’s nothing to fret about."
"Well, take care in the coming days." Su Mu added, turning to Ji Nanfeng: "And you—don’t get complacent during this critical period."
Ji Nanfeng nodded with a smile:
"Don’t worry; I wouldn’t dare."
It was clear that the dynamic between Jiang Bei and Ji Nanfeng was much more relaxed than before, making Su Mu feel a lot more reassured. She could only hope their relationship would continue improving, growing ever better.
Life seemed to calm down. Though Su Mu stayed in the hospital every day, rarely venturing out, having Qiqi and Fu Shinian beside her made even the hospital room feel less unbearable. That day, Fu Shinian’s latest test results came back, and Qiao Yu came to the room, glancing at Su Mu and Qiqi with a smile.
Since moving to Fu Shinian’s room, Qiqi had been much more cooperative, not just with treatments but also with psychological support. The psychologist Qiao Yu had introduced didn’t encounter any resistance from her. She did feel hesitant to leave the hospital room for therapy next door, often lingering by Fu Shinian’s side, but she always obeyed in the end.
These days, Qiqi occasionally spoke—not much, and still far less than before everything happened—but she was steadily improving. This was a fact everyone could see.
When Qiao Yu entered the room, Qiqi turned to look at him, her lips curving into a faint smile. Qiao Yu returned the smile.
"Uncle Qiao."
Those simple three words, uttered by Qiqi, made Qiao Yu freeze momentarily. Su Mu was equally surprised. While Qiqi had been improving and would occasionally speak, her responses had always been passive—typically only after someone directly asked her something. But today, this was different: the first time Qiqi had actively greeted someone since returning.
Qiao Yu quickly composed himself and crouched down in front of Qiqi. He made sure not to overreact, knowing it might make her uncomfortable. Maintaining an air of casualness, he smiled softly and gently patted her head:
"Has Qiqi been good today?"
Qiqi nodded but didn’t speak again.
"Did you tell Daddy that you miss him today?"
Qiqi nodded, then shook her head.
Qiao Yu understood immediately. Qiqi was saying, "I told him in my heart."
Qiao Yu smiled and said:
"Qiqi, I believe you and your daddy share a special connection. But, you know, your daddy is asleep now, so he may not sense things very well. The words in your heart, he may not hear them. But if you say them out loud, I’m sure he’ll hear you. And maybe, he’ll wake up sooner than we expected."
Qiao Yu’s words left Qiqi visibly uncertain. She glanced at him, then at Su Mu, and finally hesitated before asking:
"Will he?"
"He will," Qiao Yu affirmed. "Your daddy loves you very much. He’d do anything for you. If you tell him with your voice how much you miss him, talk to him more, he definitely won’t be able to bear staying asleep for too long. You want him to wake up soon too, don’t you?"
