Chapter 633: Rescue
Chapter 633: Chapter 633: Rescue
Fu Shinian finally understood why Su Mu had run into the icy wilderness—only such temperatures, only such bone-chilling winds, could help her calm down, even if only slightly.
He looked at the deeply regretful Su Mu before him and forced himself to suppress all his emotions. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to lose his temper, but before that, he had to ensure Su Mu wouldn’t fall ill again. He took a deep breath several times before his raging feelings eased somewhat. Holding Su Mu’s hand, he spoke:
"Let’s go back first; it’s too cold here..."
Fu Shinian’s voice was tight, every word squeezed out as if forced. He felt it himself—he wanted to pretend to be calm and finish his sentence, but Su Mu interrupted him. She clung to his sleeve and looked at him anxiously:
"If there’s no accident, Qin Nianwan will contact us for a second meeting soon. Last time, she noticed the people we arranged and didn’t show up. If we make arrangements again, she definitely won’t show up either... She’s in the shadows, watching us from the dark. We have no idea where she’s monitoring us, but everything we do is under her gaze."
Fu Shinian understood what Su Mu was saying:
"You mean..."
"Let’s not take chances anymore, okay? Qiqi can’t bear this any longer. If Qin Nianwan contacts us again and we bring people with us, what if she doesn’t show up again? What if this time we have to wait even longer than last time?" Su Mu choked up, her voice trembling: "We can wait—but can Qiqi? No matter what requests Qin Nianwan makes, even if she asks for me to go alone, we’ll agree to it. Okay?"
Although Fu Shinian had long realized Su Mu’s intentions, hearing her say it aloud still caused his heart to clench.
Letting Su Mu go alone to meet Qin Nianwan—he couldn’t even begin to imagine what that represented. Would Qiqi never come back? Would Su Mu also be lost to him forever? He couldn’t guarantee anything.
Yet, looking at Su Mu’s desperate expression, Fu Shinian realized that if he didn’t agree to her plan, there was no way she’d relax even slightly. The only way to give her hope, even the tiniest sliver, was to make her believe that agreeing to Qin Nianwan’s conditions might bring Qiqi back.
Fu Shinian nodded:
"Alright."
"You agree?"
Fu Shinian smiled faintly: "Of course. I want Qiqi to come back too."
Su Mu looked at Fu Shinian as if a heavy weight had been lifted:
"Thank you."
She didn’t know why she said thank you—it just felt right.
Maybe she simply wanted to thank Fu Shinian for agreeing to this, or maybe she wanted to thank him for tolerating her selfishness. If she couldn’t return, then at least she could stay with Qiqi. But Fu Shinian would have to endure the pain of losing everyone.
When they returned to the villa, Jiang Bei was already waiting in the living room. She was in her pajamas and looked visibly anxious, having not even taken time to wash up. Seeing the two return, she hurried forward:
"What’s going on this early in the morning? Did something happen? Is there news about Qiqi?"
Su Mu shook her head at Jiang Bei:
"No."
Jiang Bei looked at Su Mu skeptically, then shifted her gaze to Fu Shinian. She hadn’t expected him to give the same answer, smiling slightly: "Susu just had a nightmare. It’s nothing major."
Fu Shinian prepared the hot water in the bathroom and urged Su Mu to take a soak. Though her complexion looked terrible and her mood was far from good, she obediently complied—she knew she needed to take care of her health so she’d have the strength to endure the next disaster when it came.
This much, she understood.
Fu Shinian should have stayed with her, but this time, he didn’t. He placed Su Mu into the steaming bathtub, then bent over to look at her, gently brushing her cheek:
"Take your time soaking. I’ll go take a hot shower myself—I feel like I’m freezing."
Su Mu thought back to earlier, when Fu Shinian had given her his shoes in the freezing outdoors. He was dressed thinly and had just recovered from a major illness. Without suspicion, she nodded: "Go ahead. Don’t worry about me—I’m fine."
Fu Shinian nodded, leaned down, and placed a kiss on her forehead:
"If you need anything, call me."
"Okay."
After leaving the master bedroom, Fu Shinian didn’t go for a shower. Instead, he went into the study and called Song Yi. He assigned him a task—obtaining a new phone and copying Su Mu’s SIM card. Song Yi didn’t ask for an explanation and carried out the instruction without hesitation.
Although he had promised Su Mu not to disclose Qin Nianwan’s messages to anyone, letting her go alone was simply out of the question.
He couldn’t stand by and watch Su Mu walk to her death. Qin Nianwan’s current state seemed intent on mutual destruction. She wouldn’t let Su Mu return, and Fu Shinian wouldn’t allow that to happen, either.
He rubbed his exhausted temples, preparing to extract Su Mu’s SIM card from the shattered phone, when Jiang Bei knocked on the study door. Before he could respond, she pushed the door open and entered. He froze, looking at her, stopping his actions. He had intended to put the phone away, but Jiang Bei spoke:
"No need to hide it. I’ve already seen."
Fu Shinian hesitated, then smiled slightly:
"If you’ve seen it, so be it. I figured I wouldn’t be able to hide it from you."
"What are you and Su Mu hiding from me?"
Fu Shinian didn’t answer, staring at the shattered phone on the desk. Instinctively, memories of the three photos he had seen earlier flooded his mind. Frustration and suffocation surged, impossible to suppress. He wanted to smoke, but seeing the pregnant woman before him, he held back:
"Jiang Bei, are your relations with Ji Nanfeng improving?"
Jiang Bei didn’t understand why Fu Shinian was bringing this up now, but she still answered:
"More or less. With more pressing matters lately, we don’t have the energy to worry about anything else."
Fu Shinian looked at her:
"Ji Nanfeng probably hasn’t told you—he’s disconnected from the Ji Family, effectively severing ties."
Jiang Bei paused. Ji Nanfeng hadn’t told her this. As for the reason...
"I won’t say why—you likely already know. Previously, you suffered grievances. Regardless of what decision you made about your marriage, Ji Nanfeng, before implementing it, remained your husband. He had to stand up for you, even if it meant confronting his own family. He never retreated or backed down."
To be honest, Jiang Bei was surprised, but she didn’t want to dwell on her personal matters now. She looked at Fu Shinian:
"I don’t understand what you mean. Are you trying to change the subject?"
Fu Shinian chuckled:
"Not at all. I just think you should give Ji Nanfeng a chance. And while we’re at it... neither my emotions nor Su Mu’s are stable lately. I thought having you stay with Su Mu would help her, but now it seems it’s only made you anxious as well. So, for your sake and the baby’s, I think..."
"You think I should leave? Leave Gui Ning Residence, is that it?"
Fu Shinian didn’t speak, but his silence was confirmation.
Jiang Bei didn’t show much emotion. Her gaze landed on the broken phone. After a few seconds, she turned to Fu Shinian:
"I can leave, but I want to know what’s going on with you and Su Mu. Her emotions are clearly off. The nightmare story may explain some of it, but how do you explain the shattered phone? If my guess is correct, you’ve received news from Qin Nianwan, haven’t you?"
Fu Shinian remained silent.
"Not just news—even photos or videos. And in them, Qiqi must have been injured, which is why you and Su Mu are acting this way." Jiang Bei paused briefly: "You’ve chosen to keep this hidden after careful consideration, because the previous attempt failed. This time, you don’t want to take risks, nor do you plan to share the news. You want to handle it yourselves, agreeing to whatever conditions Qin Nianwan makes."
Jiang Bei’s guess was entirely correct.
At this point, Fu Shinian saw no point in hiding the truth. But he still hadn’t figured out how to articulate it. Jiang Bei didn’t push him, only stated calmly:
"I’m just guessing. But if you don’t confirm it, I’ll share my suspicions with everyone."
Fu Shinian’s lips curved slightly:
"A threat?"
"I just don’t want to be kept in the dark."
"You already know so much. How would you still be in the dark?"
Jiang Bei frowned: "Are you really planning to handle this yourselves?"
"There’s no alternative." Fu Shinian sighed: "You saw what happened last time. Qin Nianwan is hidden in the shadows; we haven’t been able to locate her, but she sees us perfectly clearly. Su Su is right—if Qin Nianwan realizes we’ve brought people again, she definitely won’t show herself. We can wait, but Qiqi can’t."
Jiang Bei didn’t respond immediately. After a few seconds, she zeroed in on a critical point:
"Did Qin Nianwan send you photos?"
"Yes." Fu Shinian’s fingers lightly grazed the broken phone: "Three of them. Qiqi—she’s already unrecognizable. Her body is covered in wounds, and she’s lost so much weight she’s skin and bones. We can’t wait any longer. No one can guarantee that if we keep waiting, Qiqi will still be alive. It’s too big of a gamble—I can’t afford it, and neither can Su Mu."
This kind of situation, this kind of predicament—even if Jiang Bei didn’t agree, she couldn’t bring herself to counter it. She hadn’t seen Qiqi’s photos, but judging by Su Mu and Fu Shinian’s reactions, it wasn’t hard to imagine. She simply hadn’t expected Qin Nianwan to act so ruthlessly toward a child. How could she bear it? She was a mother herself.
Yet, no matter how inconceivable, this was reality.
"I’m telling you this, but don’t let Su Mu know. She’ll feel unsafe."
Jiang Bei nodded:
"I understand."
There was a brief silence in the room. After a few seconds, Jiang Bei looked at Fu Shinian: "When did Qin Nianwan arrange the meeting?"
"She only sent photos. As for the meeting time, Qin Nianwan hasn’t said."
Jiang Bei didn’t fully believe him:
"Really?"
"Why would I lie to you?" Fu Shinian chuckled: "Given your current state, do you think I’d worry about you showing up at the meeting?"
Jiang Bei paused for several moments:
"How is Su Su’s condition?"
"She’s hanging on, barely. Previously, she could still lie to herself, convincing herself that Qiqi was alright, alive and well. But after seeing the photos, she can no longer deceive herself. If this time also ends in failure, perhaps Su Mu..."
He didn’t finish, but Jiang Bei understood all too well. She refrained from questioning further. Sitting there for a while, she finally stood and stepped toward the door. Just as she was about to leave, Fu Shinian spoke: "Don’t tell Ji Nanfeng what I said. It’s not that I don’t want help—it’s that none of us can afford to lose."
Jiang Bei stopped but didn’t turn back:
"Honestly, even if Qin Nianwan demands Su Mu go alone, you won’t agree, will you?"
Fu Shinian took a few seconds before responding:
"All of this disaster originated with me—it’s not right for Su Mu to bear it."
"Have you thought about how Su Mu feels?"
"I have." Fu Shinian’s voice was soft: "But watching Su Mu walk away from me—I can’t do it. Call me selfish if you want."
Jiang Bei didn’t say much more. She left the room, and as she opened the door, Fu Shinian spoke again:
"I didn’t mean to drive you away. Having you leave is genuinely for your own good."
Jiang Bei nodded:
"I can tell the difference. But even if I leave, it’ll only be after your meeting with Qin Nianwan. Until then, I want to stay and look after Su Su."
"Thank you."
Two days after Qin Nianwan sent the photos over, everything remained quiet. Su Mu was holding onto her final thread of tension, trying to regain her strength. She forced herself to sleep, forced herself to eat, forced herself not to think about the photos. Yet, as soon as she closed her eyes, Qiqi’s image appeared before her—her insurmountable obstacle.
Fu Shinian had spent little time with her over these two days. Early each morning, he left, claiming he was visiting the elderly woman. Su Mu had no objections—she herself should be by the elderly woman’s side, taking care of her, but she had neither the energy nor emotional capacity due to Qiqi. She couldn’t stop Fu Shinian, understanding fully how much the elderly woman meant to him.
What Su Mu didn’t know, however, was that Fu Shinian hadn’t been visiting Gui Ning Residence at all. His claim of visiting the elderly woman was just an excuse—he had a multitude of things to take care of before Qin Nianwan’s real message arrived. Things like his shares in the company, his assets, and a letter written with the hope that Su Mu might someday forgive him.
At the Fu Corporation’s office, lawyers from the Legal Affairs Department had gathered in the top-floor office. They were completely dumbfounded. Today’s summons from the young CEO turned out to be for him to draft a will—even though he was only in his early thirties. The department head glanced at Song Yi, who had been standing beside Fu Shinian, trying to glean some clues. Yet, Song Yi had given away nothing.
"I know what you’re thinking, but no matter what it is, I want you to follow my instructions and handle this matter properly."
With that statement, Song Yi placed a document in front of the group. Fu Shinian continued:
"This contains all my personal assets. Transfer them unconditionally to my wife’s name as quickly as possible."
