Chapter 622: Killing Her with Every Slash

Chapter 622: Chapter 622: Killing Her with Every Slash

When Qiao Yu arrived, Fu Shinian was sitting on the steps by the door smoking. Qiao Yu wasn’t sure how long he had been sitting there, but judging by the cigarette butts extinguished beside him, it was clear his mood was heavy, perhaps on the brink of exploding in the very next moment.

Having witnessed the conversation between Fu Shinian and the old lady earlier that afternoon, and hearing all sorts of things he would never have said before, Qiao Yu now found himself at a loss for words. After some thought, he decided to remain silent.

Whatever he wanted to say, Fu Shinian already understood.

"Is Su Mu asleep? Would it be appropriate for me to go upstairs and give her a nutrient injection now?"

Hearing this, Fu Shinian frowned slightly and stood up from the steps:

"I’ll go up with you."

In the master bedroom, Su Mu was still lying in the same position. When Fu Shinian walked up to her, he noticed something different—Su Mu had already closed her eyes. She appeared to be asleep, but instead of feeling relief, Fu Shinian felt no sense of solace. Over the past days, he had come to understand Su Mu’s state all too clearly.

Though she seemed asleep now, as soon as anyone got close or touched her, she would reflexively open her eyes, guarded and wary.

Standing there, Fu Shinian suddenly felt at a loss. She hadn’t truly rested in a long time. This kind of light sleep likely wouldn’t do much for Su Mu, but it was still better than her endlessly staying awake with her eyes wide open.

So he wasn’t sure whether to let her continue sleeping like this or to wake her up and try administering the nutrient injection.

From the doorway, Qiao Yu noticed Fu Shinian’s internal struggle. He waved his hand slightly, and Fu Shinian caught the movement in the corner of his eye. Turning back to look, he saw Qiao Yu shake his head, and in that brief moment of shared understanding, Fu Shinian sighed lightly before walking out silently.

The two of them didn’t head downstairs but instead leaned against the stairway railing, speaking in hushed tones:

"Still no news from Rong Shen’s side?"

"No. She vanished from the deep mountains. The police have already searched the area but found nothing. It’s as if she disappeared off the face of the earth."

Qiao Yu let out a soft sigh:

"Can you hold on?"

"I won’t fall."

"Even if you can’t, you have to endure. There’s so much you need to handle right now. Some things we can help with, but much more is psychological. Don’t overthink it—for now, the priority is still Qiqi. Once she’s found, everything else will fall into place."

Fu Shinian didn’t respond to these words. The two of them remained silent for a long time before Fu Shinian curled his lips slightly into a faint smile:

"But what if we can’t find her?"

Qiao Yu frowned.

Of course, none of them wanted to face such a scenario. But an uncertain path lay ahead, one they couldn’t avoid no matter what. As for what awaited them at the end—nobody could predict it, though they had all braced themselves for the worst outcome.

Fu Shinian had prepared for it too.

He could feel it in his bones.

Yet he couldn’t help but wonder: if the reality they had to face was truly that Qiqi never came back, what would happen to the fragile harmony he and Su Mu had painstakingly rebuilt?

Neither of them spoke again. They stood there in silence for a long time until Fu Shinian eventually got up and went back to the master bedroom—perhaps still uneasy about Su Mu. Qiao Yu didn’t follow him. Not long after, Fu Shinian returned to the doorway and called quietly:

"Come in."

Su Mu had been moved onto the bed by Fu Shinian. Though her brows were tightly furrowed, she was sleeping soundly enough. Qiao Yu looked over at Fu Shinian:

"Has she had water?"

"Yes, when I came in, the cup beside her was empty."

Recently, the water Su Mu drank had contained a small amount of sedative. It wouldn’t harm her body but would ensure she got at least some rest. Otherwise, in her current state, she’d collapse sooner or later.

Qiao Yu administered the injection to Su Mu. Looking at her haggard face, he let out a faint sigh:

"If I ever get my hands on Qin Nianwan, I’d kill her, slice by slice."

Fu Shinian glanced at Qiao Yu:

"Aren’t you a doctor?"

"Huh?" Qiao Yu was momentarily stunned. "I’m just venting, expressing my anger."

Fu Shinian chuckled lightly and didn’t say anything more.

The days that followed brought no new developments. Rong Shen and the police had done everything they could, but there was still no progress. They hadn’t let up for even a moment, yet the effort remained fruitless. Fu Shinian found it impossible to believe a person could simply vanish into thin air. With today’s advanced information technology, finding someone—a person dragging along a child who wasn’t even theirs—shouldn’t have been this hard.

But still, nothing.

No news.

No news.

No news.

Fu Shinian had initially thought he could endure it, but as the days wore on, the irritation and suffocating frustration within him, combined with the overwhelming sense of helplessness surrounding this whole ordeal, pushed him to the brink. He felt as though he were standing at the edge of a cliff, where even a gentle breeze could tip him over.

Su Mu was sinking deeper into despair, barely uttering a word for days. The only small consolation was that she had started eating again. Although she often vomited afterward, she still ate—whatever was handed to her, regardless of the taste.

On the other hand, the old lady’s composure didn’t last. Day after day, with no news of Qiqi, the pressure finally got to her. Though she tried not to add to Fu Shinian’s burdens, she eventually fell ill.

On the third day after her illness began was when Fu Shinian found out. He rushed back to Gui Ning Residence, only to see Su Shiyue’s eyes red and puffy. Fu Shinian wasn’t in the mood to offer any comfort; instead, he seemed irritable:

"Why are you crying?"

"I’m not." Realizing Fu Shinian was in a foul mood, Su Shiyue quickly wiped away her tears. "Grandma just fell asleep."

"Got it."

Fu Shinian didn’t go to see her immediately. Since the old lady was asleep, there wasn’t much point in disturbing her now. Besides, Su Shiyue had mentioned that the old lady’s personal doctor had been staying at Gui Ning Residence these past few days. Fu Shinian decided to consult him about her condition first.

When Dr. Zhang opened the door to let Fu Shinian in, his somber expression made Fu Shinian’s heart sink slightly, though he said nothing. In truth, Fu Shinian had already braced himself for the worst.

Dr. Zhang, already in his sixties, treated Fu Shinian more like a junior. He motioned for Fu Shinian to sit on the couch. Glancing at the documents spread across the table, Fu Shinian noticed they detailed the old lady’s medical condition, specifically issues related to post-kidney transplant complications.

At that moment, his heart seemed to plunge to the bottom of an abyss.

Dr. Zhang made no attempt to hide the truth. At this point, there was no point in concealing anything. He looked at Fu Shinian and said:

"Her condition is not good."

Fu Shinian said nothing, simply listening in silence. For a brief moment, he felt the urge to light a cigarette to calm himself, but remembering how much Dr. Zhang disliked the smell, he suppressed the impulse. He remained still, as though frozen.

Dr. Zhang sighed heavily:

"I trust you’ve mentally prepared yourself, haven’t you?"

After several seconds of silence, Fu Shinian finally nodded slowly. "Yes."
