Chapter 620: Chapter 620 Hate Myself
Qiao Yu looked at Fu Shinian, feeling a deep ache in his heart. Just as he was about to speak up on Fu Shinian’s behalf, the usually kind and gentle elderly woman suddenly lashed out at Qiao Yu:
"You stay right there and don’t move. I want to hear it from him."
Fu Shinian looked at the elderly woman. His lips moved, as if he wanted to speak, but in the end, no sound came out. If anything happened to the elderly woman, it might just destroy him as well.
"Are you unwilling to speak, or unable to speak?" The elderly woman stared at Fu Shinian. "If you want to keep hiding it from me, then fine, but look at yourself now—unkempt, disheveled. If I believed Qiqi is fine, then all these years of raising you have been for nothing. Tell me the truth. I’ve mentally prepared myself. I can bear it. But you can’t leave me in the dark about what’s happened to Qiqi."
At this point, Fu Shinian had no choice but to open his mouth. Clenching his back teeth, he finally said:
"Qiqi is missing."
After these words left Fu Shinian’s lips, the elderly woman froze in place for a few seconds, as though time had stopped. Even though she had said she was prepared for the worst, it seemed she couldn’t comprehend the weight of those five words. It wasn’t until she tried to rise from the couch, her steps unsteady, only to fall back onto it, that Qiao Yu rushed forward to support her, preventing her from collapsing completely.
But the elderly woman’s condition didn’t improve much. Her gaze at Fu Shinian shifted from disbelief to shock, and finally to sorrow. Qiao Yu could tell that, slowly but surely, she was beginning to accept the truth.
"I thought..." The elderly woman’s voice trembled. "I thought that little Qiqi was sick... or maybe hit by a car and in the hospital. I never imagined..."
She said she was prepared for anything, that nothing would faze her. But no matter how prepared she was, she never foresaw Qiqi simply disappearing. In her heart, she had truly believed the child had fallen ill—nothing serious. If it were truly a grave situation, Fu Shinian wouldn’t have been able to keep it a secret and would’ve spoken up long ago. Even though she had started to suspect something in the past couple of days, she held her doubts back. But who could’ve thought? Qiqi wasn’t sick, wasn’t injured—she was gone.
"When did this happen?"
Fu Shinian looked at the elderly woman and replied slowly:
"Seven days ago."
"Seven days..." The elderly woman’s tears began to fall. "So, the day after your argument, on the morning Qiqi went to school, it happened."
"Yes."
At this point, there was little left to conceal. Without waiting for the elderly woman to press him further, Fu Shinian recounted everything that had happened over the past few days. The elderly woman sat in silence, listening. Only after he had finished did she seem to awaken from a trance-like state. She attempted to stand; she felt she needed to stand. Slowly, she made a move to rise.
Su Shiyue had been by the elderly woman’s side the entire time. Watching her in this fragile state, Su Shiyue couldn’t hold back any longer:
"Grandma, you must stay strong. You have to hang on. Qiqi hasn’t been found yet. Brother and sister-in-law are already on the verge of breaking down. You can’t collapse too."
Perhaps it was Su Shiyue’s words that had an effect, or perhaps the elderly woman herself realized this truth. In the end, she simply sat on the couch, silently weeping, without saying another word.
Thus, this ordeal with the elderly woman was survived, though it had been touch and go. Thankfully, she had made it through without further burdening Fu Shinian. As he left Gui Ning Residence, Fu Shinian’s steps were weak and unsteady. If not for Qiao Yu’s quick reflexes in catching him, Fu Shinian might have collapsed entirely:
"Have you eaten anything these past few days?"
Fu Shinian massaged his forehead, trying to clear the dizziness that overwhelmed him. He didn’t even know how to answer Qiao Yu’s question. After a few seconds, he murmured, "I think I’ve eaten."
"What do you mean, ’I think’? You didn’t eat, did you? And Su Mu didn’t either, right?"
Fu Shinian didn’t respond. It seemed as if his memories of the past few days were hazy, unclear. He didn’t want to remember. From the initial panic of Qiqi’s disappearance to the endless days of receiving no news, to the growing despair creeping into his heart, he felt as though he couldn’t breathe.
Su Mu’s figure flashed in his mind, her silhouette, her despair.
"Qiao Yu." Fu Shinian gazed into the distance, his eyes unfocused, and spoke. "Do you think Qiqi will ever come back?"
"Yes," Qiao Yu replied. "Qin Nianwan’s target is you and Su Mu. Even if she wanted to harm a child, it would only happen after she’s dealt with both of you first. What she’s doing now is just trying to delay, dragging things out until you and Su Mu are completely broken, have lost all hope. Then, she’d go in for the kill. You’re a smart person—how could you not see that?"
"I know. Her target is Su Mu and me. But why involve the child? It’s been seven days. Where is Qiqi? How has she been living? Is she crying a lot?"
"Shinian..."
"Do you know, Qiao Yu?" Fu Shinian’s voice quivered. "I hate myself so much."
"This isn’t your fault. Even if Zhou Yaxian’s incident didn’t happen—"
"No, it’s not about the Wen Family. It’s about me." Fu Shinian let out a self-deprecating laugh. "Three years ago, on the eve of my divorce from Su Mu, I promised her I’d never leave her, that I’d love her and protect her for the rest of my life. And yet, not long after, I personally pushed her away, leaving her heartbroken. Three years later, I thought everything had settled, so I made those same promises again. I swore to uphold them this time."
Fu Shinian laughed bitterly.
"At first, Su Mu didn’t believe me. She said I’d made too many empty promises and that there was nothing credible about them anymore. But I forced her, little by little, to believe again. And now, look what I’ve given her instead. Once again, I’ve hurt her worse than before. I don’t even know how to talk to her. I don’t dare to touch her... Qiqi is a part of Su Mu, her very flesh and blood. And yet, because of me, she’s lost her own child..."
"Shinian, don’t think like that. Su Mu wouldn’t see it that way, and she wouldn’t blame you."
"She wouldn’t blame me, but I blame myself." Fu Shinian gazed into the distance. "I should’ve realized it earlier. After Su Mu and I got together, by the world’s standards, I gave her a good life. But what kind of life was she really living? She knew, and so did I. Three years ago, I never gave her true happiness. Even now, three years later, what I’ve given her still isn’t enough. If it weren’t for me, she would’ve lived a much better life. Even if it were with Wen Han, he would’ve treated her well. He would never have let her face something like this."
"Shinian..."
"I shouldn’t have gone back to her. I shouldn’t have disrupted the peace she worked so hard for. I shouldn’t have manipulated things to bring Qiqi back into my life. If I hadn’t done any of that, Qiqi wouldn’t be missing, and Su Mu wouldn’t have lost her child."
