Chapter 617: Chapter 617 Qin Nianwan

Perhaps it was her nerves being stretched too tightly before, perhaps she was too exhausted, or perhaps it was the thought of Qiqi’s situation that she couldn’t process. So after Su Mu finished speaking, even though she still wanted to keep going, she blacked out and collapsed.

It was already past midnight. After Fu Shinian placed Su Mu on the hospital bed, he carefully removed her shoes, tucked her under the blanket, and sat by her bedside to stare at her for a few seconds. Then he stood up, walked to the window, and lit a cigarette. Gazing at the darkness outside, the overwhelming sense of powerlessness gripped him for the first time.

Yes, powerlessness.

Everyone said he was a business prodigy. Everyone said he could manipulate the tides in Shen City. Everyone said Fu Shinian was invincible. But this seemingly invincible man couldn’t even protect his own family. Now, after Qiqi’s disappearance, he didn’t even know what else he could do besides wait.

He felt like a failure.

Three years ago, he let Su Mu leave him to endure hardship. Now, three years later, he thought they would finally have a happy family, free from turmoil. Yet unexpectedly, this separation was even more heart-wrenching. He couldn’t even discern Qiqi’s fate—whether she was alive or dead.

When Qiao Yu entered the room carrying some food and saw Fu Shinian sitting by Su Mu’s bedside, his steps instinctively softened. He asked cautiously, "How’s she doing?"

Fu Shinian shook his head:

"Still asleep."

Qiao Yu placed the food on the coffee table:

"Eat something, will you? We have no idea when we’ll get any news. There’s still a long wait ahead. You can’t let yourselves collapse before the child is found—that would be bad."

Fu Shinian had no appetite, but he knew he needed to conserve his energy, as countless things still required his attention. Qiao Yu was right; he couldn’t afford to fall apart—even if Su Mu did. He had to bring Qiqi back to her.

Fu Shinian glanced at the sleeping Su Mu on the bed, extinguished his cigarette, and stepped over to sit on the sofa. Seeing this, Qiao Yu opened the food container in front of him:

"These are easy to digest. Eat at least a little bit."

Fu Shinian looked at the food in front of him and nodded faintly: "Thanks for the trouble."

Qiao Yu didn’t leave. He sat on the opposite sofa, watching Fu Shinian begrudgingly force the food down and couldn’t help but sigh:

"I know you’re feeling deeply guilty right now and taking all the blame on yourself. But Shinian, based on everything that’s happened, this was premeditated. Even if yesterday’s events hadn’t occurred, Qiqi’s teacher would still have found a way to take her. You’re aware of this fact."

Qiao Yu was right; Fu Shinian wouldn’t deny it. Yu Xin’s actions had been premeditated, and there had been warning signs. When Su Mu mentioned that Yu Xin seemed odd, when she said Yu Xin felt familiar, he should have been on his guard.

Three years ago, the gunshot incident had not been resolved. Fu Shinian had been prepared for this, which was why he’d stationed people around Su Mu to ensure her safety. The same applied to Qiqi, but ultimately, the measures weren’t as rigorous. After Qiqi started school, most of the security was withdrawn. He had thought the school was safe, and the commute was covered by him and Su Mu. He never considered that they would target the child instead.

Thinking about this, Fu Shinian’s appetite completely vanished. He set down his bowl and chopsticks, staring blankly at the table:

"Right now, Qiqi is in Yu Xin’s hands. Her target is me and Su Mu, so Qiqi won’t be in any immediate danger. If our people still can’t locate her, she might call soon. Whatever conditions she proposes, I’ll agree. I just want to bring Qiqi back first."

Qiao Yu hesitated for a moment:

"How do you know Yu Xin’s target is you and Su Mu? Couldn’t it just be about money?"

"No," Fu Shinian replied. "If there was no connection to the gunshot incident three years ago, I might think it’s about money. But the location where Qiqi was taken is the same as where Su Mu was abducted three years ago. Such coincidences don’t happen. Yu Xin must be the true culprit behind the gunshot incident from back then. Three years ago, she already wanted to kill me and Su Mu. There must be bad blood between us. And as for Yu Xin—I’m confident I’ve never met her before. But both Su Mu and Shiyue said she seemed familiar."

Fu Shinian looked at Qiao Yu:

"For a woman to have connections with all three of us, I can’t think of anyone else besides her. Moreover, she’s the only one with a motive to want us dead."

After hearing Fu Shinian analyze the situation, Qiao Yu froze for a moment. He opened his mouth but hesitated to express his disbelief:

"You mean..."

Su Mu interrupted Qiao Yu’s words: "Qin Nianwan."

Fu Shinian turned to Su Mu and saw she had already sat up without him noticing. He walked over: "You’re awake? Do you feel unwell anywhere?"

Su Mu shook her head.

"Then... how about having something to eat?"

He reached out to take Su Mu’s hand, but she showed no reaction:

"It’s her. Qin Nianwan. She’s not dead. She changed her face and came back."

Fu Shinian looked at Su Mu:

"I’ve already asked Song Yi to investigate. Back then, although Song Zhengxian died, there was still a child between him and Qin Nianwan. We should be able to track some clues through this."

"Does Yu Xin have a child?" Su Mu raised her eyes to Fu Shinian. "You’ve had Song Yi check her records before—what did the records say?"

Fu Shinian shook his head:

"No. Her records indicate she’s single."

"In three years, Song Zhengxian is dead, Qin Nianwan has changed her face, and even the image of her presented before us in the past six months has been single. I don’t know what she’s gone through these three years. But I have a feeling—her child is probably already dead."

Both Qiao Yu and Fu Shinian were momentarily stunned by Su Mu’s bold speculation. Qiao Yu stood up from his seat:

"No way, right?"

Let’s hope not. If her child is safely alive, at least it would mean Yu Xin wouldn’t harm Qiqi, and her goal is merely to make Su Mu and Fu Shinian pay. But if her child had died because of the plan Fu Shinian orchestrated three years ago, then Qiqi...

Qiao Yu didn’t dare to keep thinking, and neither did Fu Shinian. He simply held Su Mu’s hand:

"Don’t overthink. It won’t happen."

"We can’t afford not to think about it." Su Mu gripped Fu Shinian’s hand in return, her red-rimmed eyes fixed on him: "Shinian, we have to act fast. None of us know what she might do to Qiqi. Qiqi being in Qin Nianwan’s hands... what could she do to Qiqi?"

"Susu..."

It seemed as though this was the last straw Su Mu could hold onto in her despair. She clung to it tightly.

She wanted to stay calm, but Fu Shinian’s analysis and her own conjectures drove her into a state of panic again. She couldn’t bear to imagine the consequences, yet couldn’t avoid thinking about them. Perhaps only the worst-case scenario kept her impulsive enough.

To stop at nothing and bring Qiqi back.
