Chapter 599: Chapter 599: Companionship

"It’s just a dream," Su Mu said nonchalantly, but Fu Shinian could still decipher the peril of the dream from her tension. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have rushed to see Qiqi immediately after waking up. He wanted to comfort Su Mu, to hold her, but he didn’t.

The events of last night were likely to haunt Su Mu with guilt towards Qiqi forever.

It was still early, and Fu Shinian wished that Su Mu could return to sleep for a while longer, but perhaps the nightmare had been too terrifying. Fu Shinian called her name twice, and she didn’t hear him until he patted her shoulder to bring her back to reality, and she looked at him with a hint of bewilderment:

"What’s wrong?"

"It’s still early, go back to sleep for a bit."

Su Mu shook her head: "I want to stay here with Qiqi."

Fu Shinian slightly furrowed his brows:

"Qiqi isn’t aware that we can come and go from her room as we please. She was so emotionally unstable yesterday; if she wakes up and sees us here, she might not be happy. Let’s go back to our own room. Anyway, Qiqi will wake up and go to school later, and we can come over to have a good talk with her before that."

Fu Shinian had thought Su Mu would listen, but she didn’t. She just glanced at the time:

"Qiqi will wake up at a fixed time. I’ll watch the time and leave when she’s about to wake up. You go back to sleep first, don’t stay up with me."

The words of Su Mu made Fu Shinian realize that no matter what he said now, Su Mu wouldn’t leave with him. Su Mu had barely slept since 2 a.m., and now only a couple of hours later, she insisted on staying here. Honestly, Fu Shinian felt distressed for her, but seeing how much Su Mu cared for Qiqi, as Qiqi’s father, he couldn’t really object. So, he could only say:

"I’ll stay with you."

Many years later, Fu Shinian would be grateful for this decision. After all, in the many years that followed, these were the last moments he spent with Qiqi, although they were so fleeting they almost slipped through his fingers.

Su Mu knew that Fu Shinian was also worried about her, but between Qiqi and Fu Shinian, she still chose the former. It wasn’t that Fu Shinian wasn’t important enough, but after the unsettling expansion in her heart and the terrifying dream, Su Mu found it impossible to leave Qiqi’s side. Only by staying could she find some peace of mind.

In the time before Qiqi woke up, neither Fu Shinian nor Su Mu spoke. Su Mu held Qiqi’s hand the whole time, and Fu Shinian never let go of Su Mu’s hand either. In this quiet atmosphere, everyone’s mood and feelings were calm, wishing that this moment could stretch infinitely long and that they could always continue like this.

Perhaps this period of companionship somewhat alleviated Su Mu’s fear of losing Qiqi. So when Fu Shinian reminded her at 6:30 a.m. that it was time to leave, she wasn’t as reluctant and even managed a faint smile:

"I’m not in any state to meet Qiqi like this. I’ll go freshen up first. In a few minutes, Qiqi should be awake."

Fu Shinian nodded:

"I’ll go with you."

Su Mu felt inexplicably tense, and even put on light makeup after freshening up. Fu Shinian, who had finished getting ready in the outside washroom, now stood at the bathroom door watching Su Mu and smiled faintly: "You’re not even this nervous when you meet me, are you?"

Su Mu also felt her behavior seemed exaggerated and laughed self-deprecatingly:

"I don’t know what’s going on, I just feel a bit out of control."

"Relax, Qiqi won’t ignore you."

Although Fu Shinian said that, he wasn’t really sure himself since it was the first time he had ever seen Qiqi like that yesterday during all the time they had spent together, and he didn’t have any experience on whether one night was enough for Qiqi to calm down. Su Mu seemed to be seeing it for the first time too.

Over the past three years, Qiqi had been the entire spiritual pillar of Su Mu’s life. Although she has now reconciled with Fu Shinian, Qiqi’s importance to Su Mu is probably much higher than Fu Shinian’s by more than one or two levels. Fu Shinian didn’t feel jealous; he was grateful for Qiqi’s presence.

Because he cared so much, he was now nervous.

From the corridor outside the door came Su Shiyue’s voice, seemingly calling out Qiqi’s name. Fu Shinian and Su Mu exchanged looks, then left the master bedroom together and headed towards Qiqi’s bedroom.

Qiqi’s room door was still closed, Su Shiyue stood by the door knocking:

"Qiqi, it’s your aunt here. Didn’t you ask me to take you to school over the phone? It’s almost 7 o’clock now, time to get ready and set off."

It wasn’t long before the door opened, and there stood Qiqi, disheveled, eyes as swollen as walnuts, yet she still managed a polite smile and softly called out, "Aunt."

"Good girl."

Su Shiyue sweetly responded, ready to go in and help Qiqi freshen up, but before she could take a step, Qiqi saw Su Mu and Fu Shinian behind Su Shiyue, and her smile vanished, probably recalling the words she overheard last night, her small face immediately darkening.

Su Mu hurried over, and before she could say anything, Qiqi had already closed the door, once again shutting them out.

The words last night were not just talk, Qiqi truly didn’t want to deal with Su Mu and Fu Shinian anymore.

Although Fu Shinian was not confident about Qiqi cooling off, he did not expect that after one night, she would still be the same as the previous night, not leaving them any chance. He thought there could be some relief for Qiqi, but now it seemed, the lies woven between him and Su Mu had done great harm to Qiqi.

Don’t say that children don’t understand anything. Actually, their thoughts and feelings are very simple, and sometimes extremely stubborn as well.

Su Shiyue was also startled by Qiqi’s actions and turned to look at Su Mu and Fu Shinian, who seemed somewhat sorrowful, and offered an awkward smile:

"Although I don’t know the reason, as you can see, Qiqi is still mad at you both. How about you hide for the time being? I’ll go in and help Qiqi freshen up?"

Fu Shinian and Su Mu had no better idea, so they could only nod:

"Alright, you go in then, talk to her well."

Su Shiyue nodded:

"Of course I will talk well, but the little princess’s mind is not something I can persuade."

With a sigh of helplessness, Su Shiyue pushed the door and went in. Su Mu and Fu Shinian stood at the doorway, feeling helpless for the first time, wishing time could be reversed in the face of their daughter.

Jiang Bei also came out of his room at this time and somewhat understood the situation upon seeing the two:

"Is Qiqi still angry?"

"Yes," Su Mu said with a self-mocking smile. "She cares too much about having a complete family, so she’s very resistant and angry about the conversation last night."
