Chapter 577: Chapter 577: In My View, Six of One, Half a Dozen of the Other

Rong Shen probably didn’t expect Ji Nanfeng to say these things to him at this time, but he also didn’t think to argue about anything. After all, those were indeed things he had actually done, so there was nothing he couldn’t admit. He slightly smiled and said:

"What about you? What have you done for Jiang Bei? Did Jiang Bei marry you because she liked you? Was it because you were suitable? Not at all, it was just because at that time, you were the only one bold enough to marry her, so she did. We’re both men, so we understand each other. Deep down, I know what you think. You’ve always liked Jiang Bei but could never get her, so even if you use your own marriage as a sacrifice, you feel it’s nothing. But after you truly got her, did you really like her?"

"If you really liked her, how could you have an affair? I arranged a woman for you, but whether you took the bait was not something I could control. In the end, you never placed Jiang Bei in your heart, nor have you ever treated her as your true wife. You see everything between you as a transaction: you made her leave me, she let you have her, and that’s all there is to it."

Ji Nanfeng laughed softly:

"You’re not me; how would you know whether I truly like her or not?"

"Is this the way to like someone?"

"That’s still better than you." Ji Nanfeng looked at Rong Shen: "Do you dare say you like Jiang Bei? Probably not, right? From the beginning, you simply haven’t met such a woman in your own world. You wanted to conquer her, to discipline her, that’s all. Although I may not be much better than you, at least I’ve treated her sincerely."

Rong Shen looked at Ji Nanfeng for a few seconds and after a moment, he understood the meaning behind his many words:

"So you’re saying you have no plans to divorce?"

"I won’t divorce. If Jiang Bei divorces me, I could guess with my toes what you would do to her. I won’t let you succeed. Even if I were to maintain a nominal marriage with Jiang Bei, I would never push her back to your side again. Just give up on that idea."

Rong Shen wanted to say something more, but Qiao Yu, who was sitting aside, couldn’t help but speak out:

"Have you two said enough? What do you think Jiang Bei is?"

He stood up from his place and looked at the two men coldly:

"Both of you have seen what Jiang Bei used to be like, but look at her now. Saying she’s like a walking corpse wouldn’t be an overstatement. She used to be a healthy and cheerful person, yet you two have forced her into her current state. Are you proud of yourselves, still having the nerve to stand here and list each other’s wrongdoings against Jiang Bei?"

"If you really care about Jiang Bei, if you really want her to be healthy and to return to her former self, then let go of her. Both of you think you like her, but just look at what you both have done. Do you really see Jiang Bei as some invincible being who can bear everything? There’s no lack of women around you; if you want someone like Jiang Bei, it wouldn’t be impossible to find. If it’s the thrill of conquest or the satisfaction of control you seek, go find someone else. She truly can’t bear any more from you."

Qiao Yu looked at Ji Nanfeng:

"I’ve never regretted my decision back then as much as I do at this moment. If I had known that Jiang Bei marrying you would end up like this, I would have married her myself, even if it cost me my life, I would never let her suffer like this beside you. You’re unable to take responsibility for her whole life, unable to give her the peace she desires. You shouldn’t have bothered her from the start."

Qiao Yu also looked at Rong Shen:

"You too. Even with power and influence, how can you disregard someone else’s feelings, their joys and sorrows, even someone else’s life, as if it were a trivial matter? Everyone is the treasure within the palm of their parents. You like her, you admire her, but you and she are in two different worlds. So you should have just watched from a distance, watched her be happy, watched her be joyful. If you truly couldn’t do that, then change for her, integrate into her world. But what did you do? You didn’t hesitate to break her wings, to shatter her legs just to satisfy your desire to conquer."

"What do you both think of yourselves? And what do you think of Jiang Bei? Such a lively person, yet you’ve driven her into depression. If either of you has a shred of conscience, if you truly want what’s best for her, then stop shamelessly arguing over petty standings. In my view, you’re both the same, neither of you is a decent person, and you certainly don’t deserve her."

Qiao Yu’s words left Ji Nanfeng speechless and Rong Shen silently contemplating. Fu Shinian rose from his seat, lightly arching his eyebrows:

"I agree with what Qiao Yu said. Claiming to act for Jiang Bei’s good, yet what you’re really doing is hurting her more than anyone else. As a man, I’m not impressed with you."

Having said that, he patted Qiao Yu on the shoulder:

"Let’s go and see Jiang Bei."

Qiao Yu nodded faintly, turned, and left. From beginning to end, he never looked back again, leaving the two men in silence for a long time.

Ji Nanfeng’s body hurt all over, every part of him screamed in pain, but his heart ached even more. He struggled to understand Jiang Bei’s current feelings but knew that she was sad, that she didn’t want to continue living like this. Just because Rong Shen was around, she couldn’t choose to end it.

Thinking about this, he couldn’t help but smile and slowly turned to look at Rong Shen:

"How about we make a pact?"

Rong Shen narrowed his eyes slightly, looking at Ji Nanfeng.

"Let’s stop fighting over her. You leave her alone, I leave her alone. We return the ordinary days back to her. The reason she attracted us was because of the spirit she had, the one that never gives up or submits, right? But look at her now, she has become someone who only compromises with life and fate. What right do we have to destroy a person’s life? Jiang Bei is a doctor; she has saved countless lives, yet what sin has she committed to deserve our ruination."

"Don’t tell me you can’t even remember. Even if she really did something offensive to you or me, the setbacks and hardships she had endured over the years would have been enough to repay the debt. We’ve taken away from her the very trait we loved the most. All that’s left to give her is her own body. Enough is enough."

Ji Nanfeng’s voice was soft, it was unclear whether from pain, or because he himself couldn’t bear the words he was saying.

Rong Shen listened quietly to Ji Nanfeng speaking, neither agreeing nor objecting. He remained silent and eventually walked away. Ji Nanfeng didn’t understand Rong Shen, so he wasn’t sure what Rong Shen really meant. But no matter what, perhaps Jiang Bei might finally get some peace for a while.

Peacefulness can help one see clearly. Maybe during this time, Jiang Bei might be able to truly understand how she wants to live her life from now on.

As for the grievances Jiang Bei suffered today, he wouldn’t let her suffer in vain. She is still his wife, so nobody can bully her, not even his own mother.
