Chapter 573: Chapter 573: Thanks for the Good Intentions, That’s Enough
Su Mu visited the hospital again two days later, firstly to see Zhou Yaxian, and secondly to ask about the decision Wen Han and Wen Shaoyuan had made regarding her last suggestion.
When Su Mu arrived, Zhou Yaxian was awake but seemed not in good spirits, reclining against the head of the bed, gazing out of the window, lost in thought, with Wen Han sitting by the bed trying his best to get her to eat something. However, Zhou Yaxian seemed not to hear at all, as if she were turning a deaf ear.
Upon hearing a sound, Wen Han turned around, and showed a slight surprise when he saw Su Mu, then stood up from his seat and said:
"Why are you here?"
"I came to see how Auntie is doing. Is she doing okay?"
Wen Han shook his head, put the food on the bedside table, and Su Mu approached to hand the flowers over to Wen Han:
"Go put the flowers in water. Maybe it will cheer Auntie up a bit."
Although Wen Han felt that this method might not be very effective for Zhou Yaxian, he nodded, took the flowers, and walked to the washroom.
Su Mu placed the insulated food container on the bedside table and then sat down on the chair beside the bed. She silently observed Zhou Yaxian, who remained unresponsive to her surroundings, for a long time. Although it had only been two days since their last meeting, Zhou Yaxian’s condition seemed to have worsened; her complexion was even paler than before.
It really was as Ji Qingluan had said—if Zhou Yaxian continued like this, her leaving was just a matter of time.
"Auntie, I’ve come to see you."
Zhou Yaxian showed a slight reaction to Su Mu’s voice, her eyes moved but she didn’t turn her head. Su Mu then spoke again: "Auntie, I remember you used to love the nourishing porridge I made. I made some and brought it for you today. Would you like to try it?"
Zhou Yaxian slowly turned her head to look at Su Mu, and her lips curled into a light smile:
"Susu is here?"
"Yes, Auntie. Can I feed you a bit?"
Zhou Yaxian instinctively frowned and was silent for a few seconds, but to everyone’s relief, she ultimately did not refuse. Despite her obvious reluctance, she agreed. Su Mu smiled, opened the insulated container, which didn’t really contain any special nourishing porridge. Knowing that Zhou Yaxian hadn’t eaten in a long time and couldn’t just eat anything, Su Mu had only prepared a simple millet porridge with some red dates and goji berries.
She poured a small bowl and began to feed Zhou Yaxian spoonful by spoonful. Watching Zhou Yaxian eat with difficulty, yet persisting all the while.
When Wen Han came out of the washroom, the scene he saw was just like this. He was momentarily startled, for a second he felt as if everything before him was an illusion, but he quickly came to his senses, smiled slightly, and walked closer. Su Mu, sensing his gaze, looked up to meet his eyes and gave a faint smile.
Zhou Yaxian didn’t react much to Wen Han’s approach. Su Mu watched him place the vase on the bedside table and asked softly:
"How much should she eat?"
Wen Han glanced at the small bowl in Su Mu’s hand: "Is this the first bowl?"
"Yes, she hasn’t eaten much."
"If possible, have her finish this bowl and then no more after that."
Su Mu nodded: "Okay."
Zhou Yaxian seemed like a child in Su Mu’s eyes at that moment, even more obedient than Qiqi. She would feed a spoonful, and Zhou Yaxian would eat. It was apparent Zhou Yaxian didn’t want to eat, yet she didn’t get angry or refuse. Perhaps it had been a long time since Wen Han saw Zhou Yaxian eat, he stood behind Su Mu, looking on until his eyes reddened with emotion, and he said:
"Su Mu, thank you."
Su Mu could feel the weight in that thank you and smiled softly, but she did not turn back:
"It’s nothing."
Zhou Yaxian graciously ate a small bowl, and Su Mu took out a tissue to wipe her mouth. Seeing that Su Mu put the small bowl on the nightstand and didn’t ask her to continue eating, Zhou Yaxian couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief. Su Mu noticed this and found it endearing:
"Auntie, is the porridge I made not tasty? You seem very reluctant to drink it."
"It’s good." Zhou Yaxian’s voice was somewhat hoarse: "You come every day, I’ll drink every day."
Su Mu was stunned for a moment, but she did not respond, as she could not make such a promise.
However, she hadn’t expected Zhou Yaxian to be so sensitive now, looking like a child yet keenly observing Su Mu’s reactions. Zhou Yaxian clutched Su Mu’s hand tightly and stared at her unblinkingly:
"Susu, don’t you want to come every day? Are you still blaming me? I can apologize, you can hit me, scold me, throw tantrums at me, but you can’t just leave Wen Han. He truly likes you. He doesn’t know about the things I did, you can’t treat him like this..."
Wen Han had been on guard for any harm Zhou Yaxian might inflict on Su Mu, but he didn’t expect such a sudden move. It was too late to stop it when he tried, and as he attempted to pry Zhou Yaxian’s hand off, the more forcefully Wen Han tried, the harder Zhou Yaxian gripped Su Mu’s wrist. In the end, she left two bloody marks on the back of Su Mu’s hand.
Seeing the bloody marks, Wen Han let go. He looked at Su Mu:
"Just agree for now, don’t get hurt."
Su Mu was genuinely pained by Zhou Yaxian’s grip and nodded, but she did not agree to get back together with Wen Han; she only said:
"Auntie, you’re overthinking it. I’ll come again tomorrow. You’ve finally eaten something today; I want to see you eat even more tomorrow."
Zhou Yaxian was stunned, then she smiled, loosening her grip on Su Mu’s hand somewhat. Wen Han took the opportunity to pull Su Mu away, wanting to hold her hand and see the extent of the injury, but Su Mu instinctively dodged it. She looked at him and smiled:
"It’s nothing."
Wen Han frowned but did not insist. He simply said: "Find a nurse to check it later, don’t take it lightly."
"Alright, I know."
Wen Han looked back at his mother:
"I’ll walk you out."
Having said that, he picked up the thermos from the nightstand and stepped out of the ward. After bidding goodbye to Zhou Yaxian and promising to continue visiting tomorrow, Su Mu walked towards the door. Wen Han waited at the door, handed her the thermos when she came out, and said:
"Thank you for your kindness and for visiting my mother in the hospital. But Su Mu, you shouldn’t come anymore."
Su Mu looked at him, silent.
"I know and must admit that your presence does help my mother’s condition, but I can’t always depend on you, can’t let you be responsible for my mother’s sickness forever. You already have the life you wanted, and I don’t want to be a burden to you, so let’s end it here."
