Chapter 568: Chapter 568: Actually, There’s Not Much I Can Do
Wen Han glanced in Su Mu’s direction, his brows slightly furrowed, intending to rescue Su Mu’s hand from Zhou Yaxian’s grasp, he straightforwardly began to speak:
"Mom, what are you talking about? Su Mu and I have already broken up, please stop saying things that make it hard for her."
"What?" Zhou Yaxian doubted what she had heard: "Broken up? When did this happen? You were even engaged, how could you break up?"
It was only then that Su Mu realized not only was Zhou Yaxian’s mental state not very good, but her memory was also confused. However, it wasn’t Su Mu’s place to answer this, so she chose to remain silent. Wen Han apologetically glanced at Su Mu and explained to Zhou Yaxian:
"It happened a few months ago. You knew about it too, it’s just that you’ve been unwell lately and forgot about it."
Wen Han’s explanation didn’t satisfy Zhou Yaxian. After hearing Wen Han’s words, she fell silent for a moment before becoming agitated. The grip on Su Mu’s hand that Wen Han had just loosened was clasped tight again by Zhou Yaxian, with even more force than before, as she looked eagerly at Su Mu and asked:
"Susu, tell your aunt, you haven’t really broken up, you are just lying to me, right?"
Su Mu was in a difficult position, but she couldn’t lie. The previous act had already taught them a lesson, and they should not repeat the same mistake this time. After glancing at Wen Han, she ultimately didn’t give the answer Zhou Yaxian wanted to hear:
"Aunt, we have already broken up."
Hearing this from Su Mu herself, it seemed Zhou Yaxian finally believed it. The light in her eyes gradually faded until it turned into utter disappointment. Su Mu felt a pang of guilt, but there was no better way. She apologetically looked at Wen Han, trying to withdraw her hand from Zhou Yaxian’s grasp, but Zhou Yaxian’s emotions escalated in the next moment:
"Susu, I don’t care why you broke up, but could you consider getting back with Wen Han? You know he likes you, only you, and you like him too, right? Otherwise, why would you have accepted him before?"
Su Mu’s brows furrowed slightly, yet she didn’t know what to say.
"Look at my current health, I don’t know when I might leave this world. If my time comes and things between you and Wen Han aren’t settled, I won’t be able to die peacefully. I’m not trying to pressure you, but I just think you two are very suitable, Wen Han will definitely not let you suffer the slightest grievance, you..."
"Mom!" Wen Han interrupted Zhou Yaxian while also quickly stepping forward to free Su Mu’s hand from Zhou Yaxian’s grip, looking displeased at Zhou Yaxian: "I’ve told you clearly, Su Mu and I breaking up was a well-considered decision, and there’s no turning back. Please stop saying things that make it difficult for us, it’s impossible for us to be together again."
Wen Han’s words stunned Zhou Yaxian for a long time, then her breathing became unstable, and the electrocardiogram machine began to fluctuate erratically. Wen Han and Su Mu were both startled, but thankfully they quickly pressed the nurse call button, and soon a doctor appeared rapidly inside the room.
After the check-up, Zhou Yaxian was not in any serious trouble, just overly agitated which caused her breathing issues. Before leaving the room, the doctor glanced at Wen Han, then at Su Mu, and said:
"You both know the patient’s condition can’t withstand any stimulation at the moment. Even if there are serious matters, they should be kept from the patient for now, and discussed when her condition improves. This time it was just breathing issues, next time what awaits you, we can’t say. Be careful in your handling."
Wen Han thanked the doctor and saw him out. Zhou Yaxian also fell asleep. Su Mu stood beside the bed looking at Zhou Yaxian, finding it hard to imagine that such a strong, formidable woman had now become like this.
Wen Han walked over and stood beside Su Mu, giving a faint smile:
"It’s getting late, you should head back first."
Su Mu nodded her head, but she didn’t take a step forward; instead, she looked at Wen Han: "Tell me, what exactly did the doctors say about Aunt’s condition? Is it really serious?"
"It’s serious because if she can’t find her way out, if she keeps confining herself in that world, then even the best medication won’t be able to sustain her life indefinitely. In other words, her current behavior is a sign of her weariness of life, wanting to commit suicide, just that she doesn’t want to make it too obvious in her subconscious."
"But it might also not be considered serious, as no one knows when she might suddenly regain consciousness. Maybe once she wakes up, she’ll overcome her mental barrier and become strong again. In fact, none of us ever expected my father’s departure to inflict such damage on my mother. If my father knows this from the afterlife, I wonder what he would feel seeing my mother in this state."
Su Mu listened quietly without responding, and only after Wen Han prompted her to leave did she softly agree, pausing for a few seconds before slowly starting to walk away.
Since it was uncertain when Zhou Yaxian might wake up, Wen Han did not accompany Su Mu downstairs. The two said goodbye at the door of the hospital room. However, Su Mu didn’t leave immediately; she turned around to look at Wen Han:
"Have you been at the hospital all this time?"
"No, Auntie Li comes over, and I can’t stay here all the time."
Su Mu nodded, then spoke after a moment:
"If you think it’s okay, I can take Shaoyuan to Gui Ning Residence to live with Qiqi. It might make it easier for you to take care of Aunt, and perhaps it’s good for both Shaoyuan and you."
Wen Han did not reject Su Mu’s proposal, considering that with everything that had happened lately he was indeed spread too thin. He nodded:
"I’ll discuss it with Shaoyuan, thank you."
"No need, besides this, it seems like I can’t really help you in any other way."
Wen Han smiled:
"Be careful on the road."
"You too, take care and rest. I’ll come to visit Aunt again when I have the chance."
"Okay, thank you."
After Su Mu’s figure entered the elevator and disappeared from sight, Wen Han turned back to the hospital room. It seemed like that was the only thing he could do for Su Mu, to watch helplessly, unable to intervene in her world.
Su Mu hadn’t seen Ji Qingluan just now and thought she had already left, but unexpectedly saw her standing by the hospital entrance smoking. It seemed she had been there for a long time, possibly waiting for someone. Su Mu didn’t know if Ji Qingluan was waiting for her, but upon seeing her, she knew she had to go greet her.
As Su Mu approached, Ji Qingluan shifted her posture, the cigarette was then pinched out under her foot, probably feeling it was inappropriate, and she bent down to pick up the butt and threw it into the nearby trash can. After completing these actions, Su Mu had reached her, and she smiled:
"This is the first time I’ve seen you smoke."
