Chapter 417: Chapter 417: Without Resentment, Where Comes Forgiveness
As a woman herself, even though she and Ji Qingluan were rivals in love, Su Mu didn’t want to see Ji Qingluan continue like this:
"Have you ever thought about giving up?"
"I have thought about it, and I tried," Ji Qingluan replied with a bitter smile, "but it seems that the saying is true, the best things are those we cannot have. I tried everything, but he still occupies the most important place in my heart just like in the beginning, and has never left, so I accepted it. There’s nothing wrong with being hopelessly in love, especially since I haven’t met anyone as foolish as me."
Su Mu nodded:
"It is quite foolish."
"You’re not one to talk," Ji Qingluan looked at her. "You weren’t much better in your devotion to Fu Shinian. But speaking of which, you haven’t answered my question. Do you want to forgive Fu Shinian?"
Su Mu looked at the scenery already swallowed by the night and smiled slightly:
"I’ve never hated him, so what’s there to forgive?"
As if afraid that Ji Qingluan wouldn’t believe her, Su Mu continued:
"When I first heard him say ’divorce,’ and heard the groundless accusations he hurled at me, I was honestly heartbroken, in pain, and even went around undignified, trying to prove my innocence. But once I slapped myself awake and realized everything was true, knew the purpose behind his actions with me, and knew he wasn’t the person I thought he was, I suddenly let go."
"No one can say I was happy during those two years of marriage, and no one can say with a clear conscience that Fu Shinian treated me well during our marriage. But even so, I gave him all my feelings voluntarily. No one forced me. I knew he didn’t hold me in his heart, I knew he didn’t like me, but I still loved him unreservedly. So, who can I blame? Blame Fu Shinian? He’s not at fault."
"The lifesaver was someone I misidentified. He never admitted it, and the things that happened before the divorce were just me accepting his distrust and dislike. There wasn’t much to accept, so there’s no talk of hate. If there’s anyone to hate, it’s myself for misidentifying him as my lifesaver and wrongly devoting nine years of my feelings."
Ji Qingluan listened quietly and, after a few seconds, slowly spoke:
"You still like him, otherwise you wouldn’t blame yourself for everything."
"No, I don’t like him anymore. Because I no longer like him, I don’t want any further complications. Hating someone means you have to remember them, but I don’t want to remember him. I just want to forget him because I don’t want to hate. That would be making it difficult for myself."
"You do see things clearly."
"Before, I lived in ignorance because I was young and naïve. After going through so much, if I still couldn’t see clearly, I might have to consider whether my intelligence was the problem."
Ji Qingluan smiled softly, and just as Su Mu decided to go back to wash up and call Qiqi, Ji Qingluan asked:
"Will you marry Wen Han?"
Su Mu’s actions slowed, then she shook her head slightly: "I don’t know, but I’m certain I have no plans to marry now."
Ji Qingluan nodded:
"It’s getting late, you should rest early."
"You too."
Su Mu and Ji Qingluan stayed in the mountain area for three days. The original four-day trip was suddenly cut short on the third day due to a phone call Ji Qingluan received. Su Mu was by Ji Qingluan’s side when she took the call, so she saw Ji Qingluan’s face change instantly, her entire demeanor tensed. Ji Qingluan only said one sentence:
"I’m going back now."
Ji Qingluan hung up the phone and looked directly at Su Mu. Su Mu initially thought it was Ji Qingluan’s personal matter and had no intention of asking, but seeing her demeanor now, she wasn’t so sure, and said:
"What happened?"
"Let’s go back first, leave these things for the staff to handle," Ji Qingluan said, grabbing Su Mu’s hand and heading towards their lodgings. Su Mu, puzzled, could only follow her pace. Just as she was about to ask again, Ji Qingluan spoke:
"Uncle Wen suddenly fainted and is now in the hospital being resuscitated."
At that moment, Su Mu couldn’t believe what she’d heard:
"Uncle Wen, you mean Wen Han’s father?"
"Yes."
Su Mu remembered Wen Songyan as a robust man, always vibrant despite his age due to his years in the military. She never thought a day would come when he would fall ill, but Ji Qingluan likely wouldn’t joke about such a matter. After her initial shock, Su Mu quickened her steps, following Ji Qingluan who quickly packed up their luggage and headed straight back to Shen City.
After a busy day in the mountains, both were dirty. They arrived in Shen City around 8 PM with no time to go home to change, rushing directly to the military hospital. Wen Songyan was still in resuscitation, not yet out of the operating room.
Wen Han sat next to Zhou Yaxian on a bench in the corridor. Wen Han seemed alright, but Zhou Yaxian was visibly exhausted. There were a few others standing around whom Su Mu had never met. While hesitating whether to go over to Wen Han, Ji Qingluan greeted a serious-looking man in his thirties:
"Brother."
Ji Qingshan responded lightly, "How was the trip?"
"It was fine."
After greeting Ji Qingshan, Ji Qingluan remembered Su Mu standing next to her, worried she might feel uneasy facing her family alone, and smiled:
"You go and stay with Wen Han; I’ll talk to my brother."
Su Mu nodded faintly at Ji Qingshan, then walked towards Wen Han. Ji Qingshan’s gaze lingered on Su Mu until she sat down before turning back to Ji Qingluan:
"Is she the woman Wen Han is with now?"
"Hmm."
"And you lost to her?"
Ji Qingluan frowned slightly: "Brother, why do I find your words so awkward? What do you mean I lost to her? As if I had ever won before."
When Su Mu sat next to Wen Han, he finally noticed, surprised:
"How come you’re here?"
"With such a serious event, of course, I had to come. You should have told me."
Wen Han smiled, but didn’t know what else to say. Who could have imagined his father, lively and laughing when he left the house that morning, would suddenly faint that afternoon?
Zhou Yaxian’s eyes were red, and seeing her like that, Su Mu felt distressed. Having known Zhou Yaxian this long, always optimistic, this seemed to be the first time Su Mu had seen her like this and couldn’t bring herself to even speak, only looking at Wen Han and softly asking:
"Did the doctors say what caused it?"
