Chapter 397: Silent Compromise, Quit While Ahead
Chapter 397: Chapter 397: Silent Compromise, Quit While Ahead
This seems to be the first time since their reunion that the two had calmly spoken about the past. Su Mu wasn’t angry anymore, and Fu Shinian no longer aggressively pressed her to make a choice. Everything seemed to have returned to how it used to be, but it was just a moment of self-deception.
After a moment of silence, Su Mu stood up:
"The wound has been treated properly and shouldn’t be a problem. If you’re not at ease, I can accompany you to the hospital for a check-up."
"There’s no need, I trust you."
Su Mu glanced at Fu Shinian, then averted her eyes: "It’s getting late. You should head back."
Fu Shinian didn’t move, his gaze falling on the dining table not far away:
"I rushed here from Shen City after work, haven’t even had a bite to eat, then got injured by you. Don’t you think you should offer me a meal?"
Su Mu looked at him:
"Fu Shinian, I am now Wen Han’s girlfriend, and you are my ex-husband. Do you think it is fair to him for us to be alone together when Wen Han isn’t around? Or do you think I’m a fickle woman, at your disposal to trifle with?"
Fu Shinian frowned:
"That’s not what I meant."
"It’s inconvenient for you to stay." After saying this, Su Mu turned and went into the kitchen. She took out several food containers and scooped a bit of each dish from the dining table into them. Finally, she packed them in a bag and placed it in front of Fu Shinian: "This is the most I can do for you. Please leave."
Fu Shinian knew the principle of gradual progression and believed that Su Mu must have had new feelings about previous events tonight. Not keeping him here was her consideration for Wen Han, and giving him half of the meals was her silent gratitude. Fu Shinian understood, so he simply smiled, rose from the sofa, and picked up the prepared food:
"Thank you."
Su Mu didn’t speak, didn’t look at him, and thus naturally missed the deep gaze and the perfectly curved smile on Fu Shinian’s lips.
After Fu Shinian left, Su Mu reheated the food. When she went back to her room to call Qiqi for dinner, she found her already asleep in bed, clutching her little bear toy. Looking at the scene before her, Su Mu felt more complex than ever. She didn’t call out to Qiqi, but simply covered her exposed arm gently, then quietly retreated.
She didn’t touch the dishes on the dining table at all, completely having lost her appetite. She didn’t know how long she had sat there, nor could she remember what she was thinking about. All she knew was that when the phone rang, her mind was a blank, as if she had traveled through time.
It was Wen Han, Su Mu noted the time, it was nearly ten o’clock.
After composing herself, Su Mu pressed the answer button, and Wen Han’s voice came through:
"You haven’t gone to bed yet?"
"No." Su Mu smiled faintly: "I finished work late today and just got back a little while ago."
"Are you tired?"
Her body wasn’t tired, but her heart was exhausted. She couldn’t understand why those two wounds had such an impact on her. Rong Shen had told her, Fu Shinian had admitted, and Qiao Yu had also discussed the details of the incident with her. Su Mu didn’t deny her shock, but she had never lost control like she did today.
Perhaps only by seeing the wounds for real could she understand the danger of that moment and truly believe that he had indeed risked his life for her before causing her any real harm.
Years ago, at the crossroads, he didn’t meet her, so the person who saved her wasn’t him. But three years ago, in that abandoned underground parking garage, the person who took two bullets for her and risked his life and his grandmother’s safety was Fu Shinian, an undeniable fact.
Wen Han waited for a while for Su Mu’s response but eventually spoke up to remind her:
"Su Mu?"
Su Mu snapped back to reality, a wave of guilt flooding over her: "Sorry, I was spaced out just now."
"Are you too tired? You didn’t rest well while caring for Qiqi at the hospital, and now you’ve thrown yourself back into work. You should take better care of yourself. I won’t bother you further; go rest soon, and I’ll call you tomorrow."
Knowing that Wen Han was about to hang up, Su Mu instinctively spoke out to stop him:
"Wen Han."
Wen Han smiled softly: "I’m here."
"There’s something I want to tell you."
Wen Han didn’t immediately respond, as if he already had an inkling of what Su Mu was about to say. A few seconds later, he spoke quietly:
"Go ahead."
"This morning, a new tenant moved into the apartment across from mine."
"A Fu Shinian?" Wen Han inquired in a soft voice.
Su Mu didn’t understand why Wen Han would guess that, but he was right, and she couldn’t deny it.
Each end of the call was silent for a few seconds, the atmosphere quiet yet intensely uncomfortable. Su Mu wasn’t a man, but she could look at it from Wen Han’s perspective; he must be upset and worried. Su Mu had considered not telling him, but as Fu Shinian didn’t seem to plan on moving, Wen Han would find out sooner or later.
Rather than let Wen Han find out passively, it was better for Su Mu to tell him proactively.
After the silence, Su Mu spoke first:
"I didn’t know he would follow me here. I’ve talked to him just now. Of course, I hope he would leave, and I’ve expressed my determination, but I don’t know if he will listen to me, so I’m also prepared to leave this place."
After a soft chuckle from the other end, Wen Han responded:
"That’s the house you bought. Where will you go? Besides, if he can find your house in Jiangcheng, he can easily find out where you move next, whether you rent or go to a hotel. Neither is difficult for Fu Shinian; you can neither escape nor hide."
Su Mu didn’t speak further and didn’t know what else to say. Wen Han gave a light smile:
"Don’t think too much about it right now. He probably can’t stay long at this point, and I’ll come over to be with you once I finish the case I’m working on."
"Wen Han." Su Mu called him softly: "I’m sorry."
Wen Han was slightly taken aback before responding softly:
"Why apologise to me?"
"Because of me, you’ve had some unpleasant feelings."
"Su Mu, this isn’t your fault. I know you’ve done everything you could within your ability. Leave the rest to me, and don’t worry too much. Get some rest early."
The two didn’t say much more, and ended the call. Su Mu, however, stared at the darkened phone screen, unable to snap out of it. She knew Wen Han was right; Fu Shinian could find out where she was whenever he wanted, effortlessly. It didn’t matter where she hid; he would find her.
They hadn’t seen each other for three years while living in the same city, not for lack of fate, but because of his deliberation. Now that nothing was holding him back, it wouldn’t make a difference where she went.
