Chapter 391: Chapter 391: Life is Not Easy, Everyone Has a Story

Wen Han shook his head indifferently, "It’s nothing, just a bit tired from apprehending a criminal today."

"If you’re tired, you should go back and rest earlier. I’m here for Qiqi, and besides, she’s not in serious condition anymore. The doctor has said she can be discharged at any time."

Wen Han smiled but did not speak, her gaze involuntarily falling on the various toys in the hospital room. Qiqi was at that moment immersed in play among the toys, so much so that she hadn’t even noticed her enter. Su Mu followed Wen Han’s gaze and sensed her change in mood:

"Before you came, Fu Shinian had just left not long ago, bringing many gifts for Qiqi..."

"There’s no need to explain." Wen Han looked at Su Mu and lightly smiled, "I know if he wanted to do something, you definitely couldn’t stop him. If it were something between you and him, perhaps you could be a bit tougher, but in front of Qiqi, especially with her liking him so much, there’s really not much you can do."

"I’ve thought it over, I’ll take Qiqi out of the hospital tomorrow. That way, they won’t meet too often."

Wen Han smiled gently, visibly in much better spirits,

"Still, we should listen to the doctor. You don’t need to rush, and I won’t misunderstand."

Although Wen Han said this, Su Mu still went through with the discharge procedures for Qiqi the next day, and the day after leaving the hospital, they went straight back to Jiangcheng City. On one hand, she wanted to avoid Fu Shinian, and on the other hand, Qiqi’s sickness had indeed caused a significant delay in her work.

Before leaving for Jiangcheng City, Su Mu informed Wen Han. He was silent for a few seconds but couldn’t hide his concern because Su Mu did not know he had met with Fu Shinian. Innocently thinking he was just worried she would overexert herself, she consoled him a few sentences. In the end, Wen Han didn’t say much, just instructed her:

"Be careful in all things, and remember to call me if anything comes up."

Su Mu smiled in response: "I definitely will."

Back in Jiangcheng City, perhaps knowing that Fu Shinian wasn’t there, Su Mu felt even the air had become much freer. When she brought Qiqi back to the studio, she immediately noticed Lin Ning. Honestly, Su Mu was somewhat surprised since all work communications during this period had been through other people, and Lin Ning had not called her again.

Su Mu had thought she had left, returning to her previous job, but unexpectedly, she was still able to meet her here. Lin Ning looked awkwardly over at her and managed an embarrassed smile. Before Su Mu could say anything, Qiqi ran over and jumped into Lin Ning’s arms, sweetly exclaiming:

"Sister Lin, I’ve missed you so much."

Su Mu watched the scene unfold without much comment, set down her simple luggage, and directly went upstairs. She had just turned on her computer and hadn’t yet logged into her work email when there was a knock on the office door. Knowing who it was, she softly replied:

"Come in."

The door opened, Lin Ning stood at the entrance, locking eyes with Su Mu in an uneasy greeting:

"Su Sister."

Su Mu nodded:

"Sit down and let’s talk."

Lin Ning entered the office and sat down on the visitors’ chair opposite Su Mu, her hands nervously clasped on her lap, tightly bound.

Su Mu remained silent, dealing with several emails before slowly turning her gaze to Lin Ning, who remained looking nervous. Su Mu couldn’t help but chuckle, but then thinking of her previous concealment, she couldn’t help feeling a bit angry:

"You should know that I’m already aware of your identity."

"Yes, I know." Lin Ning looked up at Su Mu, "I also know I’ve done things to deceive you, Su Sister, and I really shouldn’t stay here anymore. However, in these two years running around with you, I’ve come into contact with a lot of photography, and I’ve truly come to love it. Other than this place, I really don’t know where else I could go."

Su Mu smiled faintly:

"What, Mr. Fu didn’t arrange anything for you afterward?"

Lin Ning looked at Su Mu with self-mocking laughter:

"Truthfully, people like me have always operated in the shadows. I’ve always been behind the scenes with Mr. Ji too. I thought I would be with Mr. Ji for a lifetime, but three years ago, I was suddenly assigned a mission, which was to ensure the safety of you and your daughter. At first, I felt it was using a sledgehammer to crack a nut, but my life was saved by Mr. Ji, so I couldn’t refuse."

Su Mu frowned slightly upon hearing this:

"You are Ji Nanfeng’s person?"

"Yes, I’ve been with Mr. Ji since I was 17, always his bodyguard, until Mr. Fu had an incident three years ago and borrowed me from Mr. Ji’s side to ensure your and Qiqi’s safety," Lin Ning spoke placidly. "I was kidnapped as a child and went through a lot before I thought I’d found a chance to live, but instead ended up in an organization where I was forced to learn many skills and techniques, which of course are illegal in the eyes of normal people, but those skills helped me survive. If I hadn’t encountered Mr. Ji during a failed mission later on, I probably wouldn’t be sitting here in front of you now."

Listening to Lin Ning’s words, Su Mu remained stunned for a long time, never imagining that Lin Ning, who always seemed cheerful, had such a tragic past. She opened her mouth, wanting to say some words of comfort, but what could she say? She was appalled by Lin Ning’s nonchalant description of her past stories, let alone Lin Ning herself who struggled through such experiences.

"I’ve never heard you talk about these things."

Lin Ning smiled carelessly:

"Su Sister, don’t look at me with that expression. I’m not telling you these things to gain sympathy or forgiveness."

Su Mu laughed:

"Just that since you are Ji Nanfeng’s person, why didn’t you return to his side after your so-called mission ended? If he saved you back then, surely you had something remarkable about you, and he wouldn’t want to let you go."

"I thought so too, but Mr. Ji now isn’t the same as he used to be. He doesn’t engage in those dangerous dealings anymore, so there’s not much need for my protection. I’m of no use by his side. Besides, I have come to love photography during these two years with you."

Lin Ning looked at Su Mu:

"Su Sister, I know my actions before must have hurt you, but I still want to plead for myself. I want to continue staying in the studio, continue learning photography from you. I’m no longer Mr. Ji’s person, nor Mr. Fu’s. I just want to work in peace as a photography assistant, and if I’m lucky, maybe I can open my own photography studio someday."

Su Mu was silent for a few seconds, then asked Lin Ning a question:

"I want to know what you’ve reported to Fu Shinian in these two years by my side."

Lin Ning shook her head at the question: "Nothing at all."
