Chapter 355: Chapter 355: Things Have Changed, No Longer As They Once Were
Such betrayal was even more severe than what Shi Lihua had done to Fu Shinian. After all, from the beginning, Fu Shinian had never put any hope in Shi Lihua, so whatever she did was, to him, devoid of any feeling. She had never regarded herself as his mother, and in turn, Fu Shinian had never regarded her as one either.
But Auntie Wang was different. She had looked after his grandmother for 40 years and had taken care of him all his life. The bonds were much stronger, and the situation was much more complicated and harder to let go of. However, regardless of this, it still had to be dealt with because she truly hurt the grandmother, and when someone does something like that, you can’t say there won’t be a second time. Fu Shinian couldn’t risk his grandmother’s life again.
Silently, for a few seconds:
"I can let bygones be bygones for the prior issues, just send her back to her hometown."
Qiao Yu understood Fu Shinian’s feelings as well and nodded, "That makes sense. Even though she made a mistake, she has been with the Fu family for such a long time. It’s the last kindness you can show her."
Fu Shinian leaned back wearily against the sofa, staring into the distance as if deep in thought. Qiao Yu glanced at him:
"Thinking about Su Mu?"
Fu Shinian managed a slight smile:
"I can imagine that Su Mu won’t forgive me easily."
"You can’t expect someone to let it go when it’s such a serious matter. Plus, back then, you also prepared yourself for no longer having any contact with Su Mu, so you hit her where it hurt the most. Now, after time has passed and you want to make amends, it won’t be so easy, especially since Su Mu is no longer the same as before, and she has Wen Han by her side now."
Mentioning Wen Han reminded Qiao Yu of something, and he said:
"When I arrived, Su Mu had already woken up, and the first thing she asked about was Wen Han. She was so anxious when she learned that he was injured; she hurried off to his hospital room. I didn’t follow, so I don’t know what they’d say to each other, but judging by how Su Mu looked, I don’t think she’s indifferent to Wen Han. Maybe she will even agree to be with him because he risked his life to save her."
Qiao Yu didn’t speak falsely, and Fu Shinian knew this. That was exactly why it was so grating for him to hear. He frowned slightly but didn’t respond. Qiao Yu, however, seemed to take pleasure in teasing him and let out a soft laugh:
"If it turns out to be true, what do you plan to do?"
"What do you mean what do I plan to do?" Fu Shinian glanced at him indifferently: "I won’t deny that what you’re saying is highly likely to happen, but what of it? Can’t I win back Su Mu? Don’t forget, there’s Qiqi between us."
At the mention of Qiqi, Qiao Yu’s expression softened:
"I think you should bring Qiqi to spend some time with the old lady. It might help her accept that it’s been three years later."
"Mm, I know," Fu Shinian responded faintly, though he seemed a bit short on confidence. Qiao Yu chuckled:
"You’re afraid that Su Mu won’t agree, aren’t you? I don’t think she will refuse though. She cares so much for the grandmother, and as long as it’s for the grandmother’s health, I believe she’ll agree."
Fu Shinian shook his head slightly:
"You just said it yourself, she’s not the same Su Mu as before."
The Su Mu of the past centred everything around him, and since the grandmother was his centre, Su Mu had valued her significantly. But now? After three years of no contact, his life was still the same, but Su Mu’s world had changed completely. She had her career, her friends, a child, and most importantly, she had her own identity.
She was no longer the Su Mu who prioritized him above all else.
Not to say that the grandmother wasn’t important to her—her grandmother’s affection for her was genuine, and Su Mu was a grateful person—but it wouldn’t be the same as before. Fu Shinian was mentally prepared for this.
After talking a bit more, noise came from the grandmother’s room, so Fu Shinian and Qiao Yu both stood up and walked over. The grandmother had managed to sit up in bed and was staring blankly at the night scene outside the window. Fu Shinian turned on the light, switching off the wall lamp that had been on before, and walked over, calling out gently:
"Grandma."
The grandmother turned to look at Fu Shinian upon hearing him and smiled faintly:
"You’re here?"
"Yeah, I came back from a business trip to see you."
Her gaze drifted beyond Fu Shinian, and upon noticing no one else but Qiao Yu, the smile slowly faded from her face. She looked at Fu Shinian discontentedly:
"Haven’t you been lying to me again? Saying Susu is unavailable for now... But how many days has it been? Susu has never showed up. Are you taking me for a child or a fool? How have you wronged Susu this time? Today you must tell me the truth."
Fu Shinian had come with the intention of revealing the truth to his grandmother, but starting with Su Mu’s matter, he was uncertain whether the grandmother would be in the mood to patiently listen to the rest. He was a bit at a loss, not knowing how to proceed, as the grandmother’s fierce expression seemed to be telling him:
I don’t want to hear anything other than about Su Mu.
In his moment of difficulty, Auntie Lin tapped lightly on the door and walked in, smiling slightly:
"Dinner is ready. Since the old lady is awake, let’s all have something to eat together."
Fu Shinian immediately answered:
"Good, I’ll take grandma out."
Qiao Yu couldn’t help but laugh at the scene before him but received a sharp glare from Fu Shinian.
Maybe the grandmother was a bit hungry after sleeping for so long, so she cooperated with Fu Shinian as he helped her up, but she still didn’t let him off easy, "Don’t think you can sidestep this. After we eat, I still have to ask you about it."
Fu Shinian could only nod repeatedly:
"Yes, after we eat, whatever you want to know, I’ll tell you everything."
Dinner was a warm affair, with Fu Shinian always looking after his grandmother. But the grandmother was slightly unhappy, interrupting him several times: "Don’t fuss over me with these gestures; I’m just a little weak, not a child."
Fu Shinian knew the grandmother didn’t necessarily need it, but he had gotten used to acting this way over the past three years. To him, the grandmother in her confused state was just like a child. As she had now returned to normal, that behavior was not very appropriate. He smiled and controlled his nurturing gestures.
After dinner, the grandmother seemed more alert than before, so as soon as she set down her utensils, she remembered the unfinished topic from before dinner:
"Tell me now, what has happened to Susu? What have you done to her to keep her away from visiting me until now?"
