Chapter 337: Chapter 337: Deep in the Fog, Completely Confused
Su Mu did not faint, was not drugged, nor was she knocked out; she was simply threatened by Xu Yansu. If she didn’t obediently comply, the syringe that Xu Yansu held could be jabbed into her skin at any moment, making her end up like the old lady.
In the past, Su Mu was not afraid of death, but after having Su Yimo, her fear grew. Without a father, there was no way she could be without a mother as well. Su Mu couldn’t become a burden on her daughter, so she had no choice but to submit to Xu Yansu’s threats and obediently follow her to this unfamiliar place.
At that moment, Su Mu was the only one in the room, tied to a chair, her hands bound to the armrests, immobilized. The room was so dimly lit she couldn’t see her surroundings clearly. The air smelled of various materials burned by a great fire. She suddenly remembered that Xu Yansu had mentioned a research institute burning down while they were taking wedding photos–perhaps this was the institute Xu Yansu had mentioned.
But why was she causing trouble for Su Mu? Was it because she knew that Su Mu was Fu Shinian’s ex-wife? Yet they were about to get married, and it had been three years since she and Fu Shinian had divorced. Did these actions really have any meaning?
After a moment, Xu Yansu walked in and turned on the light in the room. Su Mu squinted initially, as it took her a moment to adjust to the brightness. When her eyes finally adapted, all she could see was white. In the room, there was a workbench-like table covered with various drugs and test tubes, just looking at them filled her with dread because you couldn’t be sure these things wouldn’t be used on you.
Xu Yansu stood by the door, still holding the syringe she had used to threaten Su Mu earlier. Su Mu quietly watched her. Xu Yansu smiled, walked over, placed the syringe on the workbench, and leaned on the edge of the table with her arms crossed, looking at Su Mu.
Su Mu met her gaze without any hint of retreat until Xu Yansu spoke:
"If I’m not wrong, you’re Fu Shinian’s ex-wife, right?"
"Who I am, what does it have to do with you bringing me here?"
"Of course it does," Xu Yansu looked at her. "I never used to take his ex-wife seriously because I thought he didn’t care. What feelings can there be in a marriage sustained by a transaction? But when I found out that his real ex-wife was you, I couldn’t help but care."
Su Mu quickly seized upon a critical point in her words:
"His ’real’ ex-wife?"
"You don’t know yet? Before bringing you here, his mother and I always thought that Fu Shinian’s ex-wife was named Meng Lan, a completely different woman."
Su Mu frowned, completely confused by what Xu Yansu was saying.
Xu Yansu saw her confusion but had no intention of explaining anything. She just smiled faintly, turned around, and took a rubber tube and placed it on her own arm:
"We hadn’t planned to do anything to you, after all, having an old lady was enough. But now that Fu Shinian has moved her away, we completely lost track of her, so we had to bring you back."
Su Mu looked at her:
"What’s your purpose for bringing me here?"
"It’s simple, just to better control Fu Shinian. So, we plan to implant a virus in your body, don’t worry. This virus is in the old lady’s body, and also in Fu Shinian’s, although it’s now been cleared from the old lady, but not from him. He isn’t afraid to die, so we can’t do anything to him, can we? But since he cares so much about you, he certainly fears for your death, right?"
"Cares about me?" Su Mu laughed softly. "You’re giving me too much credit. If he cared about me, would he have divorced me? Would he have hurt me like that? You should straighten your facts. Although I was once married to him, at the end of the day, I never posed any threat or harm to you, his current partner. Is it really good to be so intolerant?"
Xu Yansu approached Su Mu, smiling faintly:
"Sometimes what you see and hear is not necessarily true. Whether Fu Shinian cares about you or not, I have eyes, I can see for myself."
As she finished these words, she had already reached Su Mu’s side and tied the rubber tube around the upper part of her arm. She then patted Su Mu’s arm with a slight smile:
"The veins are fine, but I have good technique. I can find the spot on the first try and won’t make you suffer any more than necessary."
Su Mu chuckled:
"So, should I be thanking you?"
Xu Yansu smiled faintly, stood up, and walked back to her workbench. This time she returned with a syringe. Su Mu couldn’t help but feel fear, but she couldn’t plead for mercy; after all, begging wouldn’t change the outcome.
She had been engulfed in a fog all day today, unable to understand Fu Shinian’s mother, the news of Shinian’s impending death, nor the relationship between them. She was even more confused by the words Xu Yansu had said earlier. All these so-called mysteries seemed to have appeared before her suddenly, completely disregarding her feelings. Actually, she didn’t want to know any of it; she was having a good life now, and just wanted it to be unremarkable.
She didn’t want to know anything about the Fu family or anything about Fu Shinian.
But now it seemed she had no say in the matter.
Xu Yansu squatted down in front of Su Mu. Before Xu Yansu could insert the needle into her skin, Su Mu suddenly stopped her:
"Wait a minute."
Xu Yansu looked up at her:
"Nothing you say will change my decision."
"I know."
"You know, yet you call for a halt? Are you expecting someone to come to save you? Even if someone is coming, the distance between us now is enough for me to plant the virus in your body. You should be aware that delaying won’t change your fate."
Su Mu looked at her, "I just want to know, is Fu Shinian really going to die?"
Xu Yansu seemed suddenly intrigued as she looked at Su Mu, smiling faintly:
"I thought you didn’t care about him? That you had nothing to do with him anymore? Why do you still care about this?"
"You just need to answer me, let me die with clarity, even if I am to die."
Xu Yansu was silent for a few seconds, then nodded her head:
"You don’t have to believe what his mother said at the press conference, but it’s a fact Fu Shinian’s body won’t last much longer. So, whether he dies or not is just a matter of time."
Su Mu was silent for a moment upon hearing this. Xu Yansu watched her:
"Any more questions? After this injection, you will be comatose for at least three days. Ask everything you want to ask; consider it a kindness from me."
"What about the old lady?"
Xu Yansu smiled faintly:
"Even though you say with your lips that you don’t care and it has nothing to do with you, you still can’t help caring, right? Rest assured, the old lady is doing well. Shinian used his means to make me remove the virus from her body. After a period of recuperating, she may well recover completely."
Upon hearing this, Su Mu said nothing more, leaning back in her chair with a resigned expression. Seeing this, Xu Yansu actually laughed:
"You’re not going to beg me?"
"What’s the use? Why waste words?"
"Fair enough."
After that last sentence, Su Mu felt a sharp pain. Xu Yansu wasn’t lying; with just one attempt, she had precisely inserted the needle into her vein.
