Chapter 334: Chapter 334: Returning to the Old House, It Feels Like a Lifetime Ago

Su Yimo knowing Fu Shinian, was completely beyond Su Mu’s expectations, and even after she asked that question, Su Mu took a full minute before she reacted to what she was actually saying—until Su Yimo got up from the sofa with red-rimmed eyes, clutched her little finger, and choked up:

"Mu, please talk, is Daddy really going to die?"

Su Mu slowly came back to her senses and looked down at Su Yimo, with her eyes red, feeling a mix of emotions, she silently squatted down to her level and gently held her hand, forcing a smile:

"Qiqi, what are you talking about? Mu doesn’t understand."

"Didn’t that woman on TV say that? My daddy is dying."

"Who told you that he is your daddy?"

The news that Su Yimo had just learned had terrified her. Even though she hadn’t recognized Fu Shinian as her father, she understood that he was indeed her dad. She had thought about recognizing him someday when the opportunity arose, but before she had figured out how, he was going to die. Su Yimo felt she couldn’t accept this news, so when she saw Su Mu, she blurted out the question, without considering how to explain how she knew he was her father.

Seeing that Su Mu wasn’t speaking, Su Yimo watched her silently as Su Mu let out a soft sigh, picked her up, and seated her on the sofa; she gently touched her little face, and patiently said:

"You’ve met him."

Still silent, Su Yimo avoided Su Mu’s gaze. Su Mu had suspected that Fu Shinian might have met Su Yimo when he had mentioned ’Qiqi’, but without evidence. Now, watching Su Yimo’s behavior seemed to confirm her suspicions.

"When?"

Su Yimo cautiously looked at Su Mu, asking in a soft voice, "Are you mad, Mu?"

Su Mu shook her head:

"I’m not mad; I just want you to tell me the truth. When did you meet him?"

"On my birthday," Su Yimo said with her head hung low: "I went to the hospital with Xiaobei’s mom, and then I saw him."

Su Yimo’s muffled words were unclear, but Su Mu understood the gist—it must have been a meeting with Qiao Yu, who then informed Fu Shinian. However, Su Mu couldn’t understand why Fu Shinian, who had clearly denied Su Yimo as his child, was now referred to as ’daddy’ by Su Yimo.

"What did you two talk about?"

"We didn’t talk much; he apologized and said he was sorry."

That simple statement from Su Yimo was like a knife to Su Mu’s heart, causing a pain so acute she found it hard to breathe. Had he acknowledged her? Had he acknowledged Su Yimo as his child? Why would he acknowledge her? On what basis? Su Mu had no curiosity; she neither wanted to know nor cared to find out.

She felt heartache but only for her daughter, for the journey they had undertaken these past three years.

Su Mu’s silence unsettled Su Yimo, who reached out to gently cradle her face and softly said:

"Mu, are you unhappy?"

"No," Su Mu denied: "Qiqi, did he say he’s your daddy?"

Su Yimo nodded: "Yes."

"And did Qiqi acknowledge him?"

"No."

Even though she hadn’t acknowledged him as daddy back then, nor called him that, in her heart, Su Yimo had acknowledged him. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have been anxious after seeing the news, wouldn’t have cried, and wouldn’t have mentioned the topic of ’daddy’ so openly in front of her mother for the first time.

Su Mu was unwilling to let Su Yimo acknowledge Fu Shinian as her father because, back then, he had never acknowledged the child either. She had pain, hatred, even a desire for revenge, wanting to return all the suffering he had once imposed upon her. However, such emotions disappeared after the birth of Su Yimo. She softened all her resentments, so now, facing her hopeful gaze, Su Mu couldn’t bring herself to say cruelly, "He’s not your dad."

Whether or not he acknowledged her wasn’t important to Su Yimo, she was only concerned about Fu Shinian’s health:

"Mu, you still haven’t told me, will he die?"

Su Mu shook her head:

"I don’t know."

The light in Su Yimo’s eyes dimmed, and it was evident that she had hoped for Su Mu to give her a negative answer, but she didn’t.

Seeing Su Yimo’s disappointed look, Su Mu patted her hair:

"But I can call to ask for you, okay?"

Su Yimo nodded but no longer held a clear expectation, seemingly afraid of another disappointment.

Su Mu dialed Qiao Yu’s number, a number she hadn’t reached out to in three years. Surprisingly, nobody answered. She then called Jiang Bei, and as soon as he answered the phone, Jiang Bei knew what she was calling for:

"Susu, I can’t reach Ji Nanfeng right now; I don’t know what’s true about the situation."

After talking with Jiang Bei for a while, she hung up. Su Yimo was still waiting, so Su Mu, after looking at her for a few seconds, finally dialed Fu Shinian’s number. It took nearly all her courage, but the result was disappointing; Fu Shinian’s phone was turned off.

Everything was abnormal. Qiao Yu, Ji Nanfeng, and Fu Shinian—all three being unreachable at once didn’t seem like a good sign.

Originally, Su Mu’s heart was unsettled merely because of the surfaced relationship between Su Yimo and Fu Shinian, but now she began to worry about Fu Shinian’s safety. Was it really as Shi Lihua had said, that he was not long for this world?

If it were before, she would have been emotional, sighing, and gone through a myriad of feelings but without any regret because she had tried her hardest, fought for everything, and never owed anyone from the beginning to the end. But now that Su Yimo knew about his identity as her father, Su Mu felt regret for Su Yimo. Perhaps with time, she would eventually forget this episode from her childhood, but it was undeniable that she needed a negative answer now.

Just that Su Mu, couldn’t give her one.

The desire to return to Jiangcheng City slowed down, as even if she went back now, she would still worry about everything here.

When she brought Su Yimo to the Wen Family, Wen Han wasn’t there; only Zhou Yaxian and Wen Shaoyuan were. Wen Shaoyuan was happy to see Su Yimo arrive, but it was obvious that Su Yimo’s mood wasn’t very high, as he quietly comforted her by his side.

Su Mu didn’t stay long, exchanged a few words with Zhou Yaxian, and left.

Driving away from the Wen Family, Su Mu hesitated for a few seconds and eventually steered toward the direction of the old house, a place she hadn’t visited in a long time.

At the gate of the old house, Su Mu was stopped by the security guard. She wasn’t surprised and inquired politely:

"Is Mr. Fu in? I need to see him."

"He’s not."

"Do you know where he went?"

The security guard glanced at her but didn’t answer her question. Of course, the security guard was only responsible for the safety of the old house, how would he know where Fu Shinian had gone?

Looking at the house before her, which hadn’t changed at all from her memories, Su Mu felt as if she had stepped into another world.
